Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 6/20/2012

Adventure Time #5 (Kaboom!)
Dr. Bustos: They introduce Adventure Tim! This has been a favorite nickname for the show! His world is different and somehow weirder. A+
NickZ: So twisted and fun from beginning to end! It’s Topological!…err Mathematical!

Astonishing X-Men #51 (Marvel)
Andy: It was alright. Not worth all that hype, though. And what’s with everyone looking like they’re trying to not crap their pants? And forgive me, but it seemed like Beast was the one who should have gotten married. C+
Arnab: It was a nice enough wedding; not terribly boring and not too over the top. B
Jeff: As much as I love seeing marriage equality in a comic book, the fact that Northstar pulled together this wedding in a week took me out of the story. That, and the art made the book suffer.
NickZ: Wedding issues are pretty boring but I guess this one was alright. Kinda Meh?

Avengers Academy #32 (Marvel)
Jeff: Love the focus on Juston and his Sentinel, but I find it hard to believe the academy faculty and students would defend the Sentinel.
NickZ: Really X-23? You’re gonna take on a Phoenix powered Emma Frost!?! You’re as dumb as your daddy.

Avengers Vs X-Men #6 (Marvel)
Arnab:
“Men know that regardless of their endless sins against mutants, their heroes will protect them.” This pretty much sums it all up. It’s also a great allusion to how things are for the minority group in the real world as well. A
Infinite Speech:
I love that this issue was GREAT! I hate the fact I wasted $20 bucks on the previous 5 issues to get here. Seriously Marvel, this is how the series should have started!
Jeff: I’m pretending that those first 5 issues don’t exist. This is more like it! Thank you, Olivier Coipel, for making this feel epic.
NickZ: Best issue so far!! Love the return of Professor X and Scarlet Witch. Finally this fight feels like there is a reason for it.

Avenging Spider-Man #8 (Marvel)
Jeff: Remember when this book started with Wells & Madureira? Now it’s C-list writers and artists. Cancel this now.
NickZ: Didn’t read “Ends of the Earth” but this was still a cool Silver Sable flashback story.

Before Watchmen: Comedian #1 (DC)
NickZ: DC needs to take these creative teams and put them on some of their regular books. So good.

Batwoman #10 (DC)
Arnab: It’s a decent story and all, but I just can’t wait for this arc and this story format to be done with. B
Dr. Bustos:
The time line for this comic is still strange. The reveal at the end was even stranger. B

Birds of Prey #10 (DC)
NickZ: So Black Canary is just like Banshee now? Lame DC, be original.

Blue Beetle #10 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: Mr. Bones has been on of my favorite anti-heroes but he somehow tells us Jaime is a high level threat, then confused as to how he got away. OK. B-

Catwoman #10 (DC)
Arnab: I love Selina Kyle and I love that she cares about Society’s untouchables.
NickZ:
As Catwoman starts to become more and more a hero, wouldn’t you know it, betrayal!

Chew #27 (Image)
NickZ: I love how everything in Chew ends up being connected somehow  and how much attention is put into the little details of this book.

The Crow #1 (IDW)
Decapitated Dan: No… just no… This is how you fail. Pacing is too fast, character build is not there at all. You need emotion to reign on this series and this is not how to do it.

Dark Avengers #176 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
Leave it to these idiots to accidently save Dr. Doom! Parker and Walker deliver the goods and even bring back Man-Thing!

Fables #118 (Vertigo)
Andy: These toys are twisted. Looking forward to Bigby shredding the hell out of each one of’em. B+

Grim Leaper #2 (Image)
Decapitated Dan: This series is both GORE-Geous in art and story!

Hellblazer #292 (Vertigo)
Decapitated Dan: Werewolves? I love Werewolves!! A good single story with some Bisley art.

Invincible Iron Man #519 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: Setting things up for the bigger story, mostly transitions, this new suit has all sorts of powers. B
Infinite Speech: Genuinely impressed with this because Iron Man is much better when Tony is out of the armor.

Mars Attacks #1 (IDW)
Decapitated Dan: This was WAAAAY better than I thought it would be. No offense to Layman who just brought all the fun from the movie into this story. Good start!

New Avengers #27 (Marvel)
Jeff:
So this takes place after Scarlet Witch steals Hope away at the end of AvX #6? It would be nice to have a reading order for these tie-ins.
Infinite Speech: Tying the Iron Fist mythology  into the Phoenix force has been better than the past 5 issues of the core AvX title.
NickZ: I have no idea where this story fits into the whole “A vs. X” thing but Spidey and Hope make an interesting pair.

New Mutants #44 (Marvel)
Jeff: Fernandez’s art has really crippled this book, but DnA’s mishandling of the characters doesn’t help.
NickZ: All the mutant books that are not part of “Avengers Vs. X-Men” just feel so out of place right now.

Nightwing #10 (DC)
Arnab: Is it wrong that I don’t like Sonia Zucco, even though she doesn’t have much of a history? A
NickZ:
Is it just me or did Dick seem like a better crime fighter when he was Batman?

Ragemoor #4 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Truly horrific. That page with the girl as a bug queen was so sickening. Weird from start to finish and I recommend it to fans of Poe. B+

Red Hood and the Outlaws #10 (DC)
Arnab:
If you want to be blown away by an amazingly written and fantastically illustrated book, look no further. A
Infinite Speech:
If this series gets any better you’re head will explode!
NickZ: This book continues to be awesome on all levels. Lobdell and Rocafort are a match made in heaven!

Rebel Blood #4 (Image)
Decapitated Dan: Oh shit! Who saw that coming! Oh man what a great finish to this mini! SOOOO GOOD!!!!

Saga #4 (Image)
Andy: This book is so damn good. Believe the hype. Marko better be able to kick some serious ass to earn my respect. A
Arnab: Better than the hype. Take the hype and multiply it by 10, that’s how great this book is. A
Decapitated Dan: Hmmm… I can’t decide… do I like it or, do I love it? This series is the bees knees!
Dr. Bustos: The Sextillion hostesses are terrifying, The Will may be a monster but he does have his limits. A
Jeff: As awesome as this issue was, I wish they didn’t have to use child prostitution to show that the Will has a heart.
Infinite Speech: One word: Sextillion.
NickZ: From cover to cover this book is the best bang for your buck. I give it my highest recommendation.

Secret Avengers #28 (Marvel)
Jeff: Can we please let Remender get back to the story he was telling instead of this tie-in crap?
NickZ: Well at least Captain Britain was cool for a minute. Sorry to see Captain Marvel go so quickly.

Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow #14 (IDW)
Infinite Speech:
You should be reading this series if you are a fan of G.I. Joe, ninja, or breathing! I also think Robert Atkins is in competition w/ Rob Liefield when it comes to how many pouches can fit on one charater.

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – Force Storm #5 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech:
Maybe this can be put on film and be the prequeal that makes us forget about that other prequel! Thank you Ostrander and Duursema!

Supergirl #10 (DC)
NickZ: I don’t understand Supergirl’s powers at all.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro Series – Splinter #5
Infinite Speech:
I actually give a damn about Splinter now! These issues just keep getting better and better.

Uncanny X-Men #14 (Marvel)
Arnab: Mr. Sinister is the perfect foil for Cyclops. A
Jeff:
Ok, Kieron Gillen, you have now officially impressed me. Keep this kind of thing up and keep Dustin Weaver on art, and I think I might like this book again.
NickZ: Great issue! And just like that Mr. Sinister is awesome once again! Can’t wait to see what happens now.

Venom #19 (Marvel)
Decapitated Dan: Another amazing issue. Still think this book could get a notch higher, if they called it Jack O’Lantern, but as long as he is in every issue killing it (pun intended) this book will rock.
Infinite Speech: Fantastic art with a great story and you’re NOT reading this series? Answer that knock at your door because I’m going to punch you in the stomache when you open it.

The Walking Dead #99 (Image)
Andy: The silence before the storm. This is going to end very, very badly. I only hope Andrea and Carl come out ok on the other end. A
Arnab: As long as Rick, Carl, Andrea, Michonne, and Glen live, I’m good. That Kirkman better not harm a hair on those guys. A
Dr. Bustos: I guess Rick’s claim that the group will be able to be the community’s new soldiers, was a bit premature. B
Jeff: The obligatory “calm-before-the-storm” issue. My prediction is that Rick bites it next issue.
NickZ: Is everyone ready for issue #100? It’s time to batten down the hatches and brace for impact!

Wolverine #308 (Marvel)
Jeff: Great ending to a great arc! How about keeping Bunn and Pelletier around for a while?
NickZ: Jason Aaron, please come back!

Wonder Woman #10 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: I see they bring in “Wonder Woman loves everyone” in a way that’s not as terrible as when she became a Star Sapphire. A
NickZ: Holy crap, Wonder Woman is totally awesome. Read this book, people!

X-Factor #238 (Marvel)
Arnab: Now that Layla has altered things, it’ll be interesting to see how much else changes from what “she knows”. A
Jeff:
Whoa, this art was terrible! But it was great to see Guido and Madrox share some panel-time after such a long time.
NickZ: As usual, another great issue, but my chirp for New Mutants #44 applies here as well.

@jeff I totally think that same thing about Rick in the Walking Dead #100.

Jeff, I’m with you on the bit with The Will. That was incredibly unsettling, and it was a little too much “WTH?” just for the sake of it, I think. The whole idea of Sextillion was a put off for me, honestly. The story is really good so far; I don’t think it needs shock for the sake of it.
