Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 06/13/12

Amazing Spider-Man #687 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Silver Sable and Rhino will be missed…until they return later on. The guy who should have died though, didn’t.
Jeff: This story fell a little flat for me. It ended up being a typical Doc Ock/Spidey fight in which nothing really happened.

American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares #1 (Vertigo)
Andy: Never read “AV?” Start here! It will suck you in! A
Arnab: Felicia Book is back! When a bridge that is built atop a prison meant for one vampire is blown up, trouble is just around the corner.
Jeff: I didn’t even know this was coming out. But I’m glad I saw it…I think I like Felicia Book’s story more than anyone’s in American Vampire.

Avengers #27 (Marvel)
Andy: It boggles my mind how unforgiving characters are written sometimes. Makes no damn sense, since all of these characters have a black mark on their record at some point. C+
Jeff: When does this even take place? And who really cares? Very poorly planned.
NickZ: Life just got pretty sucky for Noh-Varr, but I guess that what happens when you betray everyone.

AVX VS #3 (Marvel)
Andy: How can anyone actually read this series? I just thumb through it. C+
Arnab: You know what this book needs? A little bit of logical thinking. It’s nice to see the X-Men win some though. B-
Infinite Speech: Ever read a book that was so good it made you want to slap somebody? Well this is NOT that book.
Jeff: ‘Bout time the X-Men started kicking tail!
NickZ:
The Rasputin sibs are holding it down for the X-Men! “AVX FUN FACT: DEMONS ARE REAL!” ahhh!!!

Batgirl #10 (DC)
Andy: Hm. That wasn’t Hawkgirl, apparently. Bummer. On the flip side, this may have been my favorite issue of this series yet. I like this new crew of baddies, even if their names are kinda lame. B
Arnab:
I feel like there have been way too many new villains in such a short time. It’s not so much that they’re new, but that they stay for half a second.
NickZ:
Babs must determine where the line is between “Superhero” and Vigilante!

Batman #10 (DC)
Andy: Hm. On the fence with this. Seems like “Hush” rehashed. Has potential, but we’ll see. B
Arnab: So f’n damn awesome. A
Dr. Bustos: Wow, well that went places. I’m still kind of up in the air on how I feel about this revelation. It could go amazing or bad, we’ll see. ?
Infinite Speech: Love how the back up story killed the mystery of the main story but still added something cool to it at the same time.
Jeff: I, for one, like this reveal and thought Snyder & Capullo are doing a pretty good job on this book.
NickZ: The Court of Owls story takes a very personal turn for Bruce Wayne in Snyder and Capullo’s Batman masterpiece!

Batman and Robin #10 (DC)
Andy: If Damian sticks around as Robin for awhile, he may become one of my favorite Bat-characters. B
Arnab: Damian in this book is a mutated version of the real kid. Think of him as Bizarro Damian and then forget about him. C-
NickZ: If you didn’t have enough reason to love/hate Damian, this will give it to you! Tim needs to put Damian in his place once and for all.

Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #1 (DC)
Andy: I have to admit, the first two issues of this project have blown me away. Great stuff here, and one for the lady in your life, too. A
NickZ: Hate to break it to all you Before Watchmen haters, but these books have been great so far!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #10 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: The Buffster finally gets her body back, but it’s Spike’s decision that make this one a must read game changer.

Deadpool #56 (Marvel)
Arnab: Daniel Way and Shawn Crystal are the Deadpool dream team. A
NickZ:
‘Pool goes back to “merc” school, needless to say it doesn’t end well.

Conan the Barbarian #5 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Wood is doing great job keeping me guessing. Will Conan be betrayed? I’m thinking yes. B+

Fantastic Four #607 (Marvel)
Andy: I’m always down for a well-written Black Panther story, but did everyone working on this one forget Storm is mixed up with the whole AvX thing? B
Arnab: Reed effin’ bores me. That rock guy, more often than not, is an idiot. And still, this book was fantastic. A
Infinite Speech: Anyone notice the Panther symbol for Wakanda is a reversed Thundercat logo? Great issue from Hickman and this looks like it’s going to be a great arc!

Flash Gordon: Zietgeist #5 (Dynamite)
Infinite Speech: As much as I love what’s going on on Mongo I’d like to see more of what’s going on with the strike team on Earth. Still and awesome series that would make Alex Raymond proud!

Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #10 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: I love the weird places this series will go, a spontaneously created city in another dimension that you need dimensional hopping jetpacks to get to, yes please. A
Andy: The art in this book is amazing! The best book you aren’t reading and never thought you’d like, but you will! But who wrote this one? A

Green Lantern #10 (DC)
Andy: I’m a Sinestro fan, so this GL run has been sitting well with me. But enough with the rainbow lantern stuff already. It feels so “lets make this up as we go along.” B

Invincible #92 (Image)
Dr. Bustos: Well we finally get to learn a bit more about Robot and Monster Girl. Nice to see everyone fighting some random baddies. B
NickZ: This is having two artist on one book done right! The triforce that is Kirkman, Ottley, and Walker is not to be missed!

The Massive #1 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Fans of post apocalyptic stories and great indie reads — pick this up! The world ends via natural disasters, and one small fleet is trying to survive. Well written, loaded with content, and strong characters. B+

Mega Man #14 (Archie)
Andy: Yo! This is a comic book about Mega Man! Not a  long winded stock character essay. C

Mighty Thor #15 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Remember that part in Ghostbusters when Ray thought up the Stay Pufft Marshmellow Man to come kill the team? Something similar like that happens here. Twice.

Night of 1,000 Wolves #2 (IDW)
Andy: Woah! Read #1 and #2 back to back, and holy hell — this book goes there! Gory, unexpected, and with eye boggling art. It’s horror with a pseudo-werewolf/fantasy twist — pick it up! A

Pantha #1 (Dynamite)
Andy: This series reminds me of that strip club you used to go to in your early 20s, but when you think about it now makes you feel gross and take three showers. D

Planetoid #1 (Image)
Andy: Amazing! Reminds me a lot of “Prophet,” but with machines instead of organics. Beautiful art, too, especially in the landscapes. Sci-fi fans, this is a must-read! A

Scarlet Spider #6 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Great fight between Ana Kravenoff and Kaine but the issue still felt like a filler. Gonna miss Stegman’s great art in these pages though.
NickZ: Kaine decides to be the best hero he can be and just in time too, because it looks like lots of trouble is heading his way. Also, Stegman’s art will be missed!

The Sixth Gun #23 (Oni Press)
Andy: Marvel is killing this book. Cullen Bunn’s Marvel stuff seems to have taken priority over this series. Which is really a bummer. B

Skull Kickers #15 (Image)
NickZ: More of Baldy’s origin gets revealed and hijinks ensue, hilariously, as always!

The Spider #2 (Dynamite)
Andy: He’s like Batman who kills. Awesome! David Liss is one of those writers you’ve never heard of, but puts out good stuff. Also check out his run on “Mystery Men.” It’s not what you think. B+

Spider-Men #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Not a bad start. Dragged a bit, but the last page was a great moment! B+
Dr. Bustos: Bendis sure knows how to write Pete’s voice, it made up for the lack of Pete and Miles team up for this issue. B+
Infinite Speech: Solid start but I’m hoping we get a bit more in the following issues.
Jeff: Sara Pichelli is the real star of this book. Her panels are effortless.

Superboy #10 (DC)
Arnab: First date! I guess if Conner and Tim can’t be together, Cassie will do. B+
NickZ:
Superboy and Wonder Girl have their “first date” and their love/hate relationship is off! Plus, they fight dinosaurs!

Ultimate Comics X-Men #13 (Marvel)
Andy: Brian Wood gets back to the characters that make this book tick — Iceman, Shadowcat, and the Human Torch. Can he turn this title around? Possibly. B-

Uncanny X-Force #26 (Marvel)
Andy: Phil Noto is the man. It’s so easy to fall for his women! More Psylocke stuff, please, and less Omega Red growthlings. B
Infinite Speech: Fantomex. Is. A. Pimp.
Jeff: Making Wolverine fat with disease and then having him pop himself with his claws? Classic Rick Remender.
NickZ: The shroud of evil is revealed and the enemies of X-Force go for the kill! If you are not reading this book, shame on you.

X-Men #30 (Marvel)
Arnab: I know that financially it would be a disaster, but I would have liked all the none AvX tie-in books could have gone on a hiatus. Still a good story though. A-
Jeff:
Wood’s take on Storm had some depth to her character that’s been missing for a while. Not a bad start.
NickZ: Storm’s team is really coming together and it seems she has an agenda all her own! (Don’t tell Cyclops)

X-Men Legacy #268 (Marvel)
Andy: Christos Gage is workin’ it on this title. This was one of the most well-written and character driven AvX tie-ins yet. Too bad it wasn’t very relevant to the overall event. B+
Arnab: Gage is reinvigorating this title with fantastic writing. A-
Infinite Speech: We find out more about Frenzy. In Africa. Frenzy kicks ass. In Africa. I guess only the Black X-Men can solve problems. In Africa.
Jeff: Not sure what this had to do with AvX, but it was a truly awesome issue!
NickZ: Never been a big Frenzy fan but this book gave me a little more respect for her.

Speech imagine if Frenzy went to Africa with Darwin, Bishop and Storm. Africa wouldn’t even exist anymore!

Hahaha! I just couldn’t get past that about that issue. It was a good one but I’m just tired of the Black X-Men being the ambassadors when it comes to going to Africa.
