Dark Horse continues with its Gold Key revivals this week with the second issue of Dr. Solar, Man of the Atom. Picking up right where the first issue leaves off, we are a given a few good moments of a fight scene before things settle into story-mode quite fast. The rest of the issue is more of a plot-driven issue than a kick-ass issue, which in the case of our Man of the Atom, is appropriate and a-okay with me for this character’s title.
Shooter explores the comedic side of the characters Leviathan and Glowtorch that were created from Pickerel’s mind. Here we have a comic creator stuck with his own creations wrecking his house, eating all his food, having sex in his bed, etc. Then we have Dr. Solar himself in this issue, not wanting to use force and just let these accidents live peacefully if they can stop wrecking stuff, while he tries to figure out both how to deal with Pickerel’s ability to bring characters from his mind to life, as well as his own purpose and secret identity as Dr. Solar (or “Red Suit” as they humorously keep referring to him as). The issue ends with another fantastic cliff-hanger, with a brilliant set-up for the third issue, which I have a good feeling may be a kick-ass issue where we can see Dr. Solar rip loose.
The art on this issue by Robinson was fantastic. I am really glad the art here doesn’t feel overdone. Like the first issue of Magnus, Robot Fighter, the art here feels very at home in the 90s, perfect for this title (and probably reminiscent of Shooter’s days at Valiant with these characters during their 90s revival). A shout out to the cover art by Komarck as well, for being nice to the eyes and having somewhat of an exciting pulp-fiction feel to it.
Dr. Solar, Man of the Atom #2 is a great read and the series is shaping up nicely. Out on stands this week, pick it up today!

So do you know if this series is going to have rotatiing artists on the title. I though that Calero was THE guy that was going to do the series.
