Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 6/27/2012

Amazing Spider-Man #688 (Marvel)
Jeff: Spidey & Morbius vs. the Lizard! This is a perfect tie to the upcoming movie.

American Vampire #28 (Vertigo)
Andy: The last page. That is all. A+
Jeff: It makes no sense why Pearl would agree to team with Skinner after all they’ve been through.

Aquaman #10 (DC)
Andy: The Aquaman League is bordering on being cooler than The Justice League. B+
Arnab: This is a terribly slow paced arc. That being said, this issue was all kinds of awesome. A-
Dr. Bustos: I’ve really been digging these new superheroes, hope they don’t kill off anymore of them. B

Batman The Dark Knight #10 (DC)
Andy: There are too many words unnecessarily covering up the artwork. When Batman kicked the shit out of that guy in the car, I smiled evilly a little. B-
Arnab: Strong start for Hurwitz. The part with that little girl and Batman? Awesome. B+
NickZ: A really dark Scarecrow story and the mouth sewing was gross.

Batman Incorporated #2 (DC)
Andy: YES! More Talia, Bruce, Ras and Damian, and a whole lot less of everything else. A
Arnab: Dare I say I was rooting for Talia at the end? Against Ras of course, that man had to be knocked down a couple pegs. A-
Dr. Bustos: This had one of the best Batman scenes (Batman disguised as an old woman) and worst (what Talia did to Bruce). A+ for disguise/F for the other part
NickZ: Great background issue on Talia! She is not to be messed with.

Before Watchmen: Nite Owl #1 (DC)
Andy: Hmm. All that seemed really convenient. Whatevs. I’ll read the next one. B-
NickZ: Another great Before Watchmen book! Although, I don’t like the fact that they changed things from the original.

Dorothy & the Wizard in Oz #8 (Marvel)
Jeff: Young’s art in these books are incredible, but Shanower needs to focus on making the Baum’s story flow better for a modern audience. The ending of this series failed to really wrap up anything.

Fatale #6 (Image)
Dr. Bustos: Now we have another story to add to our mysteries and it’s set in the 1970s! A-

FF #19 (Marvel)
Arnab: These kids are cooler than the adults in the Fantastic Four. Great Fun. A-

The Flash #10 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: So Iris is just gone? That’s one way to handle a love triangle I guess. B
NickZ: I never would have thought that I would be 10 issues into a Flash book, that’s not about Wally, and still be enjoying it this much.

I, Vampire #10 (DC)
Arnab: Bloody fantastic! I predict a whole lot of bloodshed next issue. A

Justice League #10 (DC)
Andy: The Justice League HQ has been broken into ALREADY!? WTF?? B-
NickZ: This issue seemed like a definite improvement from the last few. I hope that is a good sign.

Mind the Gap #2 (Image)
Andy: Like “Morning Glories” or “100 Bullets” this one will read much better in trade or all at once. B
Jeff: I’m liking the balance of murder mystery and ghostly possession. And Esquejo & Oback’s art is just so pleasing to the eye.

New Deadwardians #4 (Veritgo)
Jeff: This seemed like a superfluous issue. Not much happened.

The Savage Hawkman #10 (DC)
Andy: Wow, the title actually fit the character as Hawkman savagely forced a guy to blow up. The art in this book is fitting and looks solid — too bad the villains are weak and stock. C+

Scalped #59 (Vertigo)
Andy: Catcher shot Red Crow, Red Crow shot Dash, Dash shot both of ’em. Everybody dies. B+

Spider-Men #2 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: Is this canon? If so, I hope Peter gives Miles the webshooter tech so he can be swinging around too. That’s super useful to have. A
Jeff: This is the 616/Ultimate crossover we’ve all been waiting for. Seeing Peter and Miles together is so well done.

Superman #10 (DC)
NickZ: I’ve got two words: who cares?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #11 (IDW)
Andy: Not the best issue, but Splinter cutting a Foot Soldier in half was badass. Screw you moral code! B

Teen Titans #10 (DC)
Arnab: Kon hugging Tim is one of the most awesome things to happen in New DC. The panel right after? Hilarious. A
NickZ:
This team is finally starting to be more than just a team, but actual friends.

Wolverine and the X-Men #12 (Marvel)
Andy: Kid Gladiator’s last line had me cracking up, but Beast is a giant furred douche. I really hope Jason Aaron didn’t just forget he and Iceman used to be best buds. WTF. B+
Arnab: Does the Avengers’ stupidity know no bounds? This was never what Scott wanted, this is a direct result of their hubristic, brainless interference. Jason Aaron should stop writing Cyclops, who he clearly hates. C-
Dr. Bustos: I was getting a bit confused as to which X-Men were X-Men and which X-Men were Avengers. Beast vs. Iceman was funny. A
Jeff: Love the focus on Rachel in this issue. She should totally be more of a key player in AvX.
NickZ: I don’t know who wins for biggest douche bag in this book, Wolverine, Cap, or Beast.

X-Men #31 (Marvel)
Arnab: For someone who used to be a thief, Storm is illogically critical of Scott and disgustingly forgiving of Logan. C
Jeff: This feels like a retread of a Warren Ellis story, only not as well-written, nor with compelling art.
NickZ: I wish all the X-Men would stop turning on Cyclops.

X-Men: Legacy #269 (Marvel)
Arnab: “They fought to keep it as it was. We fought to make it better.” This right here is the epitome of why the Avengers are a big fail.
Jeff: I think there should be an ongoing title called Ms. Marvel & Rogue: a buddy-team where they fight each other every issue.
NickZ: Rogue Vs. Ms. Marvel… AGAIN!
