Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 09/19/12

“Artifacts” #21 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: After showing off what the Heart Stone can do Marz and & Sejic leave us with one hell of a cliff hanger!

“Avengers” #30 (Marvel)
Andy: I like Spider-Woman, but Hawkeye? Jeez. Enough already, the movie came out in May. Also, what’s with the #AvX banner? (2/5) #Avengers
Infinite Speech: Hawkeye & Spider Woman work out their issues while Hydra seems to gearing up for somethng big!
Jeff: I hate stories that have superheroes working out their issues while they fight bad guys. It lessens the threat and makes them seem ridiculous.
NickZ: This is the Hawkeye I know and love. I want a series with him and Spider-Woman dealing with their relationship while kicking bad guy butt!

“Avengers Academy” #37 (Marvel)
Jeff: I have missed the “would-be-villains” aspect of this book, so Finesse’s actions at the end of this issue made me cheer.
NickZ: The kids save the world! What’s next? Graduation?

“Battle Beasts” #3 (IDW)
Andy: As a fan & collector of the toys I’m geeking out on all the cameos. Fun anthropomorphic violence with fitting art. (2.5/5) #BattleBeasts

“Batwoman” #0 (DC)
Andy: This needed to come out years ago when “Elegy” began. As a father to a wonderful baby girl, this one hit home. (4.5/5) #Batwoman
Dr. Bustos: I wish we could have gotten Kate’s back story in not such an exposition feeling way, but I did like her writing to her father. B-

“Before Watchmen: Nite Owl” #3 (DC)
NickZ: Nite Owl gets his sexy on, while Rorschach gets into some trouble.

“Birds of Prey” #0 (DC)
Andy: So the Birds originate from Penguin’s ranks? A little too on the nose but the artwork’s what you want in a BoP book. (3/5) #BirdsofPrey
NickZ: Nice back story on how the Birds got started, Dinah looking all kinds of sexy, and some new developments that I’m sure will play a big role in what comes next.

“Captain Atom” #0 (DC)
Andy: It didn’t end with a bang, but overall I seemed to like this series more than most — especially the artwork. (2.5/5) #CaptainAtom

“Catwoman” #0 (DC)
Andy: This was tough to get through — Selina Kyle’s New 52 origin is 20 pages of “nope.” I miss Ed Brubaker. (1/5) #Catwoman
Arnab: What hapens when you decide to make a scene from a movie canon? Nonsense happens. C
NickZ: This book time jumped so much I honestly couldn’t follow it. Admittedly, I did read it very late at night and I was tired.

“Daredevil” #18 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
Foggy and Matt have broken up again and Mark Waid delivers a solid issue here folks!

“Dark Avengers” #181 (Marvel)
Andy: Missed a few issues and thought I could jump back in. Nope! Will come back to it later. (N/A) #DarkAvengers

“DC Universe Presents” #0 (DC)
Andy: Only read the OMAC story — Giffen & Koblish’s art is an energetic tribute to Jack Kirby. The story though… (2/5) #OMAC

“Fables” #121 (Vertigo)
Andy: Seamless character development and beautiful artwork. I miss my old toys — especially Fluffy the blue elephant. (4.5/5) #Fables

“Ghost” #0 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Good but not great. Excited the character is back, though. (2.5/5) #Ghost

“Godzilla: Half Century War” #2 (IDW)
Andy: Holy hell this book is amazing — and I don’t usually enjoy anything Godzilla. The art blows me away. (4.5/5) #Godzilla
Infinite Speech: So, when will people learn to just let the big lizard do his thing?

“Justice League” #0 (DC)
Andy: It’s “Big” meets Millar’s “Superior.” I kind of dig it — was never a big Shazam! fan. (3/5) #JusticeLeague #Shazam
Infinite Speech: The best issue of Justice League didn’t even have the Justice League in it. So what does that tell you?
NickZ: I don’t think I like the idea of Shazam being a little jerk.

“Lobster Johnson: Caput Mortuum” #1 (Dark Horse)
Andy: This issue wins for its hero shouting “Justice!” during his World War era Nazi bashing. (3/5) #LobsterJohnson

“Merciless: The Rise of Ming” #4 (Dynamite)
Infinite Speech:
Ming should be listed as one of the greatest villains of all time!

“New Mutants” #49 (Marvel)
Jeff: I think DnA have been replaced by evil future versions of themselves. That’s the only way to explain this crap.
NickZ: The art was awful, the story meh, glad this series is coming to an end.

“Nightwing” #0 (DC)
Andy: The best issue of the series — in both artwork and story. Well done. (4/5) #Nightwing
Arnab: DC’s ongoing crusade to make Tim Drake irrelevant will never succeed! B-
NickZ: Interesting take on how Dick became Robin.

“Peter Panzerfaust” #6 (Image)
Arnab: A new chapter begins in this brilliant take on an old classic. Peter Panzerfaust is everything you’d expect a modern day story about Peter Pan to be and then some. A

“Red Hood and the Outlaws” #0 (DC)
Andy: Just like that, Jason becomes Robin? Yeah, OK. Not after Nightwing 0. “Lost Days” told this story better. (1/5) #RedHood
Arnab: So, according to DC, 6 years ago Batman didn’t exist. However, 3 years ago at least 4 people know Batman is Bruce Wayne. Wait no, 4 people plus the million others who saw him take off his mask back in “Justice League #5”. Ridic C+
Infinite Speech: If the time line of some of the events wasn’t so confusing it would have been a better story. And does everyone know that Bruce Wayne is Batman in the New 52?
NickZ: Great telling of Jason’s early life. I don’t know how I feel about the whole Joker rewrite at the end.

“Red Sonja: Atlantis Rise”s #2 (Dynamite)
Andy: The King of Atlantis’ shark-steed is badass, but Sonja looks much too dainty. Otherwise, the art’s OK. (1.5/5) #RedSonja

“Revival” #3 (Image)
Jeff: Comparably, this was a weak issue. Why do all the females in this book look the same?

“Spider-Men #5” (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Bendis and Pichelli should bring these guys together once a year if the stories are going to be this great! Loved that ending!
Jeff: WOW, WOW, WOW!!! Bendis and Pichelli nailed that…especially the ending!
Dr. Bustos: It felt a bit rushed but we got a really great good bye between the two Spider-Men, who is Miles in 616 though? A

“Spike” #2 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: If you are BTVS fan and you like Spike at all, pick up this book!

“Star Trek” #13 (IDW)
Andy: A solid stand alone issue from a Red Shirt’s POV. Any Trek fan can pick this up for a taste of the IDW/movie continuity. (4/5) #StarTrek

“Star Trek: The Next Generation – Hive” #1 (IDW)
Andy: Stunning full page space shots but not being very familiar with TNG, I missed some stuff. (3.5/5) #StarTrek

“Supergirl” #0 (DC)
Andy: As a father, I can understand the choice made. If she’s old enough I’d still give my kid the option, though. (3/5) #Supergirl
NickZ: Was that Superboy on Krypton? Whaa??

“Sword of Sorcery: Amethyst” #0 (DC)
Andy: Knew nothing of the character going in and now I want more. Great art & the #Beowulf story was decent. (4/5) #Amethyst

“Ultimate Comics Spider-Man” #15 (Marvel)
Andy: If David Marquez drew this series indefinitely, I would be 100% cool with that. (3.5/5) #SpiderMan

Infinite Speech: Ganke is one cool best friend and Miles steps up to the plate in another solid issue!
Jeff: David Marquez’s expressions on these characters’ faces are brilliant. And I love the fact that this story is part of “Divided We Fall” but has nothing to do with it.
Dr. Bustos: This felt like a filler story for what is coming next issue, whatever gets us to Cap training Miles. B

“The Walking Dead” #102 (Image)
Andy: Kirkman once again shows he’s king of the bait-and-switch. (3/5) #WalkingDead
Arnab: Kirkman proves yet again that Rick is all kinds of badass. Wouldn’t it be cool though, if the others (aka Andrea, Michonne, and maybe Carl) get together and set out to do something as well because they think Rick’s gone soft? A
Jeff: Ok, I was really about to get pissed off at Rick until that last page.
NickZ: Kirkman makes it impossible for me to not love Rick. Can’t wait for the next issue!

“Wonder Woman” #0 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: I want Ares and Diana to meet again soon, that was such a sad relationship of teacher and student. A
NickZ:
How did Wonder Woman learn to be a badass? Read this issue to find out!

“Womanthology: Space” #1 (IDW)
Andy: A cool concept but lacking in execution. The stories were too short and of varying quality. Alison Ross wins. (2/5) #Womanthology

“X-Factor” #244 (Marvel)
Andy: Another series I’m behind on and thought I could jump back into — not so, and I should have known better! (N/A) #XFactor
Arnab: This team is shattering to pieces. Speaking of shattering, where’s Shatterstar? A-
Jeff: So, Theresa is a mystical banshee-creature now? Please!
NickZ: Theresa makes a huge sacrifice to help Polaris recover from her recent discovery as X-Factor continues to its breaking point.
