Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 3/7/2012

Action Comics #7 (DC)
NickZ: I’m not sure I like the direction Morrison is taking this book in. That’s probably why I like the back up story better.

Age of Apocalypse #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Really liked this one. Way better than what came out of the 90s (I can barely get through that stuff now). Killer art, too. B+
Infinite Speech: A book that has me rooting for William Stryker? Yep, this is going to be one wild ride!
NickZ: So I guess no one really dies in the AoA universe either.
Jeff: Grim, gritty, and a great start to this series!

Amazing Spider-Man #681 (Marvel)
Decapitated Dan: I love Slott on this book, but at times it seems to come off at to childish, which is not a bad thing it’s a great read, I just see flaws.
Infinite Speech: Slott is writing some of the best Spidey stories to date and it’s finally living up to the “Amazing” in that title!
Jeff: A disappointing arc both story-wise and artistically. Even though I like the Spidey/Torch relationship, their banter was annoying.
NickZ: The dialogue between Torch and Spidey is worth the price of admission.

Animal Man #7 (DC)
Andy: Great father/son moment in this one. Can’t wait for the crossover with Swamp Thing. B+ (side note: The new DC logo looks awful.)
Decapitated Dan: Steve Pugh is in the house! Love having him on the title, love this series! Best of the new 52.
Jeff: Art really threw this issue off. But the Buddy and Cliff scenes were really great.

Avengers Academy #27 (Marvel)
Andy: The Runaways are good to give a boost to any series they appear in. Gage handles these kids well. B
Decapitated Dan: Not as bad as when the RA’s showed up in Daken, but come on, they are not going to join you! They point it out too often, good read, but take more care.
NickZ: My problem with this book is that it’s way to wordy. Also, I like the Runaways better than the AA kids.

Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #9 (Marvel)
Andy: …that’s it? A great series overall, but the ending fell flat. Would still like to see how Scarlet Witch plans on re-powering the mutant population. C+
Arnab: That was a fantastic ending! All I’m hearing is how there wasn’t more to the ending, but this is how a story is supposed to end. I think it’s terrible to look at a story in terms of how it sets up the next event. This was always a YA book, everyone else was just a guest.
Jeff: It’s about time this series came to an end, even though it was beautifully drawn, but the ending was a bit lackluster.
NickZ: A great miniseries with a bit of a weak ending. meh.

Batwing #7 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
This story just keeps getting better and better as we finally get the origin of The Kingdom!
NickZ: Good to see Batwing really as part of the Bat-family but where’s Tim?

Beyond the Fringe #1 (DC)
NickZ:
If you like Fringe this was a GREAT fill in between last season and the current one. Joshua Jackson did a great job for his first time writing a comic book!

The Boys #64 (Dynamite)
Andy: Oh man, oh man! Garth Ennis is hitting just right with this series finale! Anyone who likes “adult” comics needs to be reading The Boys! A

The Defenders #4 (Marvel)
Andy: Not a Dr. Strange fan, so this was boooooring for me. Cool art, though.  C-

Detective Comics #7 (DC)
Arnab:
I can honestly say that I do not care for either of these women.
NickZ:
A good Batman tale, but nothing extraordinary.

Fairest #1 (Vertigo)
Andy: Totally not what I was expecting. Very well done- I’m digging the two main characters, but I need to re-read my Fables history. Did you catch the Macbeth reference? A

Fatale #3 (Image)
Andy: It’s good, but I’m a little lost. This is one that will read a lot better in a trade. B

Fear Itself: The Fearless #10 (Marvel)
Andy: They’re foreshadowing the death of Valkyrie… but does anyone care? C+

Ferals #3 (Avatar)
Andy: Definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you’re into Werewolves, you shouldn’t skip this series. Lapham has a lot more going on here than I initially thought. A

Green Arrow #7 (DC)
Andy: A lot better than the 6 issues prior, but still has a long way to go. B-
Arnab: Decent issue. I’ll give them a freebie considering

Hell Yeah #1 (Image)
Arnab: This was a fantastic read. Give it a shot.
Andy: Not what I was expecting, and happily so. If you like Kick-Ass, Luther Strode, Invincible, or Last of the Greats, you’ll eat this issue up! B+

Huntress #6 (DC)
NickZ:
Great art, Huntress proved what a badass she is and the ending made it worth it! Can’t wait for World’s Finest!

Infestation 2: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (IDW)
Andy: I was skeptical, but ended up being blown away. Strong Mignola-verse vibes have me hoping for a future Hellboy/TMNT crossover. A+

Justice League International #7 (DC)
NickZ:
Wow, didn’t expect the team to get trashed this bad so quickly. We are talking deaths, comas, out of commission peeps!

Magdalena #11 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech:
How in the HELL are they going to beat that thing???

The Manhattan Projects #1 (Image)
Andy: This may be my favorite Hickman series yet! Great twist at the end! If you dig history and science, you’ll love this book. A

Night Force #1 (DC)
Andy: Nope, no thanks. D

O.M.A.C. #7 (DC)
Andy: Ok DC, stop teasing! When is Kamandi making it into the New 52 Universe? B

Rachel Rising #6 (Abstract Studios)
Decapitated Dan: Beyond amazing. This series is “Rising” on my read list so fast. It is hard to think of a better title right now.
Jeff: Gah! What an ending!!! This book is phenomenal!
Andy: Woah! As usual, great stuff from Terry Moore. Still anxious to see how Echo fits into all of this…

Spawn #217 (Image)
Andy: Anytime Buffalo, NY makes it into a comic puts a smile on my face, but more to the point, the writing & art in this series has been excellent since #200. Love how they’re still using the three tiered “reporter” storytelling method, too! B+
Infinite Speech: One of the best titles coming out of Image right now! Kudranski’s art just sucks you into the story the way good visual storytelling should!

Static Shock #6 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
To say that DC dropped the ball with Static is an understatement here.

Supurbia #1 (BOOM!)
Andy: Thought this would be dumb, but it was anything but. A fun twist on the superhero genre that focuses on the women in tights! Man, this was a solid week for indies. B+

Swamp Thing #7 (DC)
Andy: HOLY BALLS! Someone call the cops! Swamp Thing actually showed up in this issue- AND HE CAN FLY!!! B+
Arnab: This is the issue that you were all waiting for. So f*ing awesome!

Sweet Tooth #31 (Vertigo)
Andy: Oh man, things are about to get nasty! If you’re reading Animal Man or Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., you should be reading Lemire’s creator owned book, too- this one! A

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #8 (Marvel)
Andy: It’s still good, but what’s this news about Peter Parker potentially coming back… and Ultimate Spider-Men? WTF? B
Infinite Speech: Continuously one of the Marvel titles that you should look forward to picking up every month!
Jeff: Hooray for Sara Pichelli! Boo for Uncle Aaron!!! What a sleaze!

Uncanny X-Men #8 (Marvel)
Andy: Enough already with freakin’ aliens nobody gives a shit about! For poops sake! The Colossus scenes and Hope & Namor exchanges were fun, but that was it. D+
Arnab: Eh, it was alright. I feel like they are paving the way for the reveal of X-Force.
Jeff: Namor making out with an underwater lady with a million boobs has to be the craziest thing I’ve seen in a comic book since the Silver Age.
NickZ: What the hell happened to Colossus? The Namor and Hope thing cracked me up and what about Magneto and Psylocke? hmm…

Venom #14 (Marvel)
Andy: Well, at least we learned ***SPOILER ALERT*** that X-23 has a soul. C
NickZ: Two things: 1. The “Circle of Four” Storyline was great! 2. I don’t like that new Ghost Rider chick.

Wolverine #302 (Marvel)
Andy: A roller coaster issue… one of my least favorite by Jason Aaron in this run. C+
Infinite Speech: Way too many art styles to keep this visually looking good and consistent but The story is great though!
Jeff: This issue was an example of how using multiple artists can really hurt a book.
NickZ: Mystique and Sabretooth just got a whole lot more interesting. More of this please.

Wolverine and the X-Men: Alpha & Omega #3 (Marvel)
Andy: If only this mini-series had some resonating facts after ending… but with two, long-feeling chapters to go, I doubt it well. C+
Arnab: I told you the last time, they were going f* this up. And they did. Quentin’s breakdown? Nonsense.
Jeff: I’m really puzzled why they chose these two artists for this book. Mark Brooks should have done the whole thing.
NickZ: Whatever awesomeness they could have done with Quentin was just ruined with this issue.

X-Club #4 (Marvel)
Andy: Not for everyone, but if science and robots are your thing, you may really like it. B-
NickZ: I fell asleep reading this book. No joke.

X-Men #26 (Marvel)
Andy: I like Gischler’s vampire stuff, but the story feel forced. Just focus on Jubilee and all will be well. C+
Arnab: I don’t believe that Jubilee could beat up anyone. Vampire or not.
Jeff: My new favorite bad guy is Lord Deathstrike. And he showed up in 2 different books this week!
NickZ: This issue was awesome with the action. I also liked how they played on Storm’s history with Vampires.

Be sure to catch up on all past Chirps here!

@Andy, I don’t think Rachel Rising ties in directly to Echo. Instead, they happen in the same universe, but they’re not intended to connect directly.

@Speech, are you serious about Uncanny X-Men? Are you sure you didn’t mean Uncanny X-Force?

    1. Arnab

That was my bad. He meant Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #8.
      Apologies

LMAO! Jeff was probably on his way to the airport just so he could fly here and hit me with his Flaming Thurible! (sp?) 🙂
