Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 3/14/2012

Adventure Time #2 (BOOM!)
Andy: Silly and fun. If you have a kiddo, or just like goofy stuff, this is worth a look. B
Dr. Bustos: My nieces and I can enjoy this one together and I adore the second story done by Lucy Knisley.

Artifacts #15 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Remember how cool Marz and Sejic were on Witchblade? Well, they’ve topped that here!

Avengers #24 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Very anticlimatic when you consider the amount of really cool build up to this story.
Andy: I would sell my left nut to have Daniel Acuna draw an X-Men book regularly. His Storm looks badass! A

Avengers Assemble #1 (Marvel)
Andy: The hell was this? Bendis threw the towel in on this one, but luckily the art was decent. D+

Batgirl #7 (DC)
Arnab:
The problem I will always have with this title is that Barbara now seems younger than me, in maturity and experience. Also, more people have died in this title than the rest of DC’s 52.
NickZ:
Thank you Black Canary for slapping some much needed sense into Batgirl. Let’s hope she starts acting more like Oracle/Batgirl now.
Andy: Thank goodness this book keeps getting better with each issue. It had nowhere to go but up, and the surprise reveal at the end has potential. B

Batman and Robin #7 (DC)
Arnab:
I love Damian., which is a complete 180 for me, but it is what it is. And Tomasi? If you could stop portraying Damian as a psychopath, that’d be great thanks.
NickZ:
Dammit Damian, you are such a disappointment! You are no Dick or Tim.
Andy: Wow, this book is raw! Loved seeing the anger pour out of Bruce in defence of his kid. A

Infinite Speech: Fury’s baby boy just got his left eye ripped out! Guess the family resemblance is a bit stronger now. Buy. This. Book!

Batwoman #7 (DC)
Arnab:
It was ok. Storytelling method is still wack, even if it makes a little more sense than it did last time.
Dr. Bustos:
I dig the idea of having to fight urban legend monsters made manifest, even if this issue was just build up, it was entertaining build up.
Andy: A little different vibe out of this issue, but I like how it slowed things down a bit. B

Blue Estate #10 (Image)
Andy: Laughed my ass off while reading this issue. When those stoner dudes got that racing horse high as hell? BWAHAHAHAHA!!! A

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #7 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: Spike and Buffy fans, don’t miss this! The issue also has a very “what a twist” ending.

Carnage U.S.A. #4 (Marvel)
Andy: Best Venom appearance ever, and an even better ending! B

Conan the Barbarian #2 (Dark Horse)
Andy: So damn good! Becky Cloonan is drawing her best stuff, and so far these two issues are reminding me of the classic Marvel Conan stuff. A+

Daken: Dark Wolverine #22 (Marvel)
NickZ: Daken and Reed Richards was my favorite Daken moment ever. (I’ve never really liked Reed either.)
Andy: Rob Williams’ run on this character has been great. Haters are gonna hate, but the whole Heat concept is a cool one, and I hope it has lasting ramifications once this series ends next issue. B

Doctor Who #15 (IDW)
Andy: Never gave a poop about Dr. Who, but this story by Joshua Hale Fialkov has been solid. B

Fantastic Four #604 (Marvel)
Andy: Holy. Shit. Hickman’s run has been building up to this point, and I need to change my pants. A+

Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #7 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: Monsters versus Robots (plus more monsters!) I enjoyed the fights and seeing the characters interact is always fun.
Andy: Loved the moment where the armory is revealed. I want an exploding sword. A

Glory #24 (Image)
Andy: Ross Campbell’s art work is amazing on this book. Detailed backgrounds, unique looking characters. Good stuff. B

Green Lantern #7 (DC)
Andy: Nobody else is digging this book, starring Sinestro? I think Johns is doing some of his best work here since the Sinestro Corps War. B+

Infestation 2: G.I. Joe #1 (IDW)
Infinite Speech:
Cobra’s mentally insane are their last hope against The Old Ones? Can’t wait to see how this one ends!

Journey Into Mystery #635 (Marvel)
Andy: Kieron Gillen is doing phenomenal work on this title. Kid Loki is awesome. How the hell is he not doing the same stuff on Uncanny X-Men? A

Lobster Johnson #3 (Dark Horse)
Andy: So damn good. Simple yet horrific. Makes me want to pick up the first volume and read the novel. A

Locke & Key: Clockworks #5 (IDW)
Decapitated Dan: Best series on the shelves. Nothing is better than this IMO. And the $#!+ just hit the fan people!
Infinite Speech: If you’re not reading this series I will hunt you down and beat you with my TMNT hardcover! Pure comic perfection!
Jeff: I can’t get past that all of this is Duncan’s fault.

Mister Terrific #7 (DC)
Dr. Bustos:
So this is the last issue isn’t it, well at least saying “Mr. Terrific fights invisible Russian terrorists on a boat” sounds cool.
Infinite Speech: The story is building quite well, too bad it’ll be all over next issue.

Mouse Guard: Black Axe #4 (Archaia)
Jeff: There is nothing more bad ass than a mouse with an axe chopping on a fox.

Peter Panzerfaust #2 (Image)
Arnab: I’m surprised at just how much I am enjoying this title. It’s great stuff. WWII meets Lost Boys, really, what more could you want?
Decapitated Dan:
This is a great read! Almost too much fun to be had all around. Anyone who like WW2 books should check it out.
Andy: I like it a lot, but the characters all look the same so things can get confusing. A character reference page would be nice. B+

Powers #9 (icon)
Decapitated Dan: Love it! Wish we could get this series on a consistent basis, but it’s cool since its worth waiting for more.

Queen Crab HC (Image)
Infinite Speech:
a great story that demands a sequel! I’d like more Queen Crab please!

The Ray #4 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
Nice introduction to the new guy though the ending was a bit too neat and tidy for me.

Resurrection Man #7 (DC)
Andy: Not sure what all the hate is surrounding this series, I think it’s some of D & A’s better current stuff. Eagerly awating RM to join Justice League Dark (I mean, he has to eventually…right?)! B-

Saga #1 (Image)
Andy: The best comic book I’ve read all year. Absolutely phenomenal, on every [emotional] level. Read it. A+
Arnab: The minute Marko started gnawing on that umbilical cord I knew I’d love this book, and I did.
Decapitated Dan: Man did I miss BKV, amazing issues, so much depth, so well done. Can not wait for more!
Dr. Bustos: I’ve talked about this comic multiple times this week, go get it, the art alone is worth it and the rest is also great.
Infinite Speech: Forty-six pages of awesome for 2.99?! Suck it Big Two, because BKV and Staples delivered top quality for less this week!
Jeff: This is a book we’re going to be talking about for years to come. Welcome back, BKV!

Saucer Country (Vertigo)
Andy: Not really what I was expecting, but still solid. Hopefully, things pick up sooner rather than later… B-
Decapitated Dan: Nice start, excited to see what comes next, big build on this one, whole lotta words.

Scarlet Spider #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
Kain finds out the hard way that Houston has a lack of skyscrapers! Another great one from Yost and Stegman!
NickZ:
This book is great but I have a question. Can Kaine teleport? Has he always been able to?

The Secret History of DB Cooper #1 (Oni Press)
Andy: Interesting concept- a Cold War era plane hijacker who is a secret operative for the U.S. government, who uses psychadelic means to assassinate his enemies… but I’m not sold yet. B

Star Wars: Agent of the Empire – Iron Eclipse #4 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: Every Star Wars story needs to be this cool!

Strain #4 (Dark Horse)
Decapitated Dan: Best vampire book being printed. Great depth and mystery as we prepare to round the corner to the finish.

Superboy #7 (DC)
Nickz: Can Superboy just join the Teen Titans already?

Thief of Thieves #2 (Image)
Andy: I was very skeptical, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. Good stuff here. If you dig crime fiction or heist stories, give this one a go. B+

Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye #3 (IDW)
Andy: I never gave two craps about the Transformers before, but I am hooked on the relaunch. Easy to get into, excellent art, and well written characters. A+

Ultimate Comics X-Men #9 (Marvel)
Andy: One of Spencer’s better issues in his run so far, but it still has a long ways to go. Focusing on Storm and Colossus was a step in the right direction. C+

The Unwritten #35 (Vertigo)
Andy: Wow, lots of huge things go down in this issue, so it’s not one to pick up randomly as it will spoil a lot. But $5? Seriously? B

Wolverine and the X-Men #7 (Marvel)
Arnab: This book is a lot fun, but fun in a way that I don’t take anything that happens in this book seriously.
Infinite Speech: This has become my 2nd favorite X title in such a short time! Now, I want to know what the Bamfs REALLY are!
Jeff: Jason Aaron is an endless well of big ideas that are awesome. Psychic shotgun? Yes, please!
NickZ:
I’m sorry but this book is just getting ridiculous! They seriously need to dial it back a notch or ten.
Andy: Yes! YES! Iceman +1000!!! A+

X-23 #21 (Marvel)
Arnab: The art in this book is too gorgeous for words, literally.
NickZ:
I think they laid off the letterer.
Andy: A beautiful ending to Marjorie Liu’s run on this series. She truly developed X in these 21 issues, but would it have killed editorial to let it end on #23? A+

X-Men Legacy #263 (Marvel)
Arnab: It’s funny, this book is supposed to be a team Yellow book, but this was an epic Team Cyclops win.
Infinite Speech: The Scott vs Logan debate is getting a bit old and interrupted a great fight! Still, a good issue overall.
Jeff:
I thought this book would just be a companion to W&TXM, but it is quite the character piece! Well done, Gage and Baldeon!

NickZ: The only thing missing from this being perfect was Cyclops saying “SUCK IT, LOGAN!, IN YOUR FACE!”
Andy: Eagerly awaiting Exodus’ confrontation with Magneto. He’s going to be the secret weapon in AvX. …but what’s with everyone bitching at Rogue? B+
