This fantastic compilation of short stories fills in small gaps between episodes that took place during the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series. Just like the hit show, each group of stories is broken up into the elemental chapters to make it a bit easier to keep track of when the events took place. We’re also given a couple of bonus stories and a preview to the Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Art of the Animated Series, which looks great I might add.

Reading this you’ll immediately see that much of what made the animated series so great is transferred directly into these pages. Mostly in part because some of the same talent involved with the show contributed to the various stories here. I can also say that even though there were certain stories that stood out more than others, I could not say there was a bad one in the entire book. The same goes for the artwork. Though, the work from Justin Ridge, Gurihiru, and Tom McWeeney were a few of my favorites. All of the styles compliment the mythos and maintain the animated look of the show. Even the art styles that were drastically different from each other managed to flow in the same vein as what we’ve seen before.

Some of these stories are reprints from Nickelodeon’s various magazines and the Airbender DVDs, though it’s great that the decision was made to put everything in one collected volume. The new stories carry the same heart, comedy, and action that made this enjoyable for both kids and adults. If you’re new to The Last Airbender mythos I’d suggest picking up the DVDs and this book, but definitely skip the live action movie. If you’re already a fan this would be a more than welcome addition to your collection, as it enhances the stories you already know and love.
