Character Spotlight: Joseph Joestar

Character Spotlight: Joseph Joestar

For a legacy to exist, it must continue on; no matter what came before it, the new generation must go on. Joseph Joestar is the next step in the Joestar family line in having to deal with a threat to all of humanity. He’s got family traits, but he’s also his own man. So who is Joseph Joestar and what’s he got to deal with? Let’s find out!

Joseph Joestar was born with his father, George Joestar Junior, tragically dead. His grandfather, Jonathan Joestar, was long dead from his final adventure. His mother, Elizabeth, was presumed dead. The only person to raise him was his grandmother, Erina. The family’s wealth allowed Joseph to go to the best schools, but his hotheaded nature often got him kicked out for fighting.

By the time he was eighteen, Joseph had been arrested several times for fighting. He had inherited his grandfather’s ability to wield the Ripple, using it with very little training to cause mischief and aid in his fighting. Erina had decided to move them from London to New York City. This new how was short-lived as long-time family friend, Robert E.O. Speedwagon, head of the Speedwagon Foundation, was in need of help.

Robert had gone missing in Mexico on another strange expedition. Joseph would thwart an assassination attempt on his grandmother by a vampire; he worried this might have something to do with whatever the Speedwagon Foundation was dealing with. Once in Mexico, Joseph would learn that the ancient stone mask that plagued his family was tied to Robert’s excursion.

The mask was just one part of a larger problem: ancient vampires who had been imprisoned in stone were now unleashed upon the world. These Pillar Men had plans to dominate the world’s population by seeking out more power for themselves. Joseph was now tossed into a grand adventure that would need him to be trained in his Ripple abilities. He would meet Caeser Zeppeli, grandson to Will Zeppeli, the man who trained Jonathan Joestar in mastering the Ripple. The two would realize they needed even further training to deal with these master vampires.

Meeting the enigmatic Lisa Lisa would allow for not only a greater understanding of Ripple control, but Joseph would finally learn more about his mother. He would also meet his future wife, Suzi Q, while training. Joseph would confront the Pillar Men, one by one, seeking to stop them from their goal. Though he couldn’t stop them there, he was able to put a stop to them hurting the Earth and its people.

Unlike his father and grandfather, Joseph would get to live a long life, joining his grandchild on adventures. He would get to experience new abilities, beyond the Ripple, and help take on a threat that had plagued his family for decades. His adventures didn’t end when he was a young man like his forefathers. He got to keep going, just not as the main hero; he was happy to see his family members take on their own spotlights as heroes.

There you have it: Joseph Joestar has the honor of being the first JoJo to get to join other JoJo’s on their bizarre adventures! We get to see him at three different points in his life and each is a fun reminder of a larger than life figure. See you next time!
