Character Spotlight: Jonathan Joestar

Character Spotlight: Jonathan Joestar

All family legacies must start somewhere. While Jonathan Joestar isn’t the progenitor of the Joestar line, it’s with his life that the true potential of the family would begin. So who is Jonathan and why is the Joestar name so important? Let’s find out!

Jonathan Joestar was born to George and Mary Joestar, but tragedy struck the young family when Jonathan was just a baby. As the wealthy family were traveling by carriage, an accident lead to the death of Mary. George believed a man, named Dario Brando, had saved him and Jonathan and that he owed him his life, not knowing this man was attempting to rob what he thought was a corpse. This mistake would alter the course of Joestar history and the world at large.

Jonathan would grow up to be a good-hearted, if messy, child. He would have a dog that he would go from enemies to the best of friends with. Jonathan would help rescue his future wife-to-be, Erina, from bullies. Then life found a new difficulty: Dario Brando would call in his favor on his death bed, requesting the Joestar’s take in his son, Dio, as their own.

Dio would prove to be a cruel boy and found joy in tormenting Jonathan, like killing his dog. As the two grew up, they became like brothers, even with Dio’s cruelty towards Jonathan. By the time they were in college, Jonathan was excelling in sports and archaeology and still finding a rival in athletics with Dio.

George would fall mysteriously ill, leaving Jonathan seeking out medicine that could help his father evade death. In his explorations of England, he would meet his life-long friend, Robert E.O. Speedwagon, who started as someone trying to rob Jonathan, but was won over by Jonathan’s kindness. The two would gain access to what they were seeking, as Jonathan had discovered that the illness was poisoning by Dio, and the medicine was actually an antidote.

Returning home, he was able to save his father and alert the authorities to Dio’s attempt at murder. Waiting for Dio to return, Jonathan would set Dio up to admit openly that he had poisoned their father by claiming George had died. When Dio admitted it, the police and George revealed themselves, awaiting to arrest him.

Unfortunately, unknown to Jonathan, Dio had discovered the secrets of a family-owned artifact: a mask. This mask, when exposed to blood, would lash out to anyone who may be wearing it and would transform them into a vampire. Dio had worn the mask and was now able to kill the police and stab George to death. Jonathan would be able to barely stay alive, as the two fought in the now burning Joestar manor.

By the end of the fight, Jonathan had barely survived and Dio was believed dead. Thanks to Robert’s dedication, he was able to get Jonathan to a hospital, reuniting him with Erina. When he was recovered enough to leave, Jonathan and Robert would meet Will Zeppeli, who would broaden Jonathan and Robert’s world view. Zeppeli possessed the power known as the Ripple, a skill to control an energy that allowed for impressive feats of strength and other abilities.

Seeking to be trained, Zeppeli would begin tutoring Jonathan in harnessing the Ripple. It is during these adventures that dark news was learned. Dio had survived that night as well. Even worse, Dio was now making an army of undead to work for him and planned on taking over the world. Jonathan, Robert, and Zepelli realized it was up to them to go fight Dio and his vampire and zombie army.
