God of War #1

God of War 3 just hit PlayStation 3 consoles last month, and like most super popular bigger-than-life video games, a comic book for it was released.
A certain tragedy has befallen Kratos, a Spartan warrior, and his family, and Kratos has revenge on the mind. This means Kratos versus the Gods of Olympus. If you’re familiar with the God of War games at all, then you pretty much know the basic story, and this series doesn’t stray far away from it.
Comics legend Marv Wolfman takes the writing duties on this title, and unfortunately not much of an effort was made. The story is very exposition heavy with some pieces of dialogue pulled straight from the game and 300. Most of this issue is of Kratos’s origins and how he ended up in a feud with the Gods. Again, if you’ve played the games, there isn’t much new here.
God of War’s best quality is the art. It’s all extremely dark and moody. The panels are big, and character designs are great to look at, but background settings are pretty obscure.
Sadly, there really isn’t much to be said about God of War. I wish I could say this were a fun companion for fans of the game, but you’re not missing out on anything by skipping this book. For those looking to check out God of War, it’s best experienced on the PlayStation 2 and 3.

I’ve never played the games but they look awesome. It’s a shame if Wolfman doesn’t put out a great book, because he’s a great writer!
