The creators of the popular Oh Joy Sex Toy comics, Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan, have teamed up with Limerence Press once again to create Drawn to Sex, a new series that is specifically geared toward approachable and fun sex education! While previous collections of Oh Joy Sex Toy comics have included toy reviews and short stories, Drawn to Sex exclusively covers sex education, making it ideal for educators, and a handy resource for anyone!

As a person of sexual maturity I still giggle when I hear somebody say penis. I don’t know why but penis just tickles me. (Insert your own laugh track folks). Seriously sex in all its many factors and performative ways are always seen as taboo to talk about in the open in a healthy way in this country. Creators Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan have been creating comics that deal with sexual education since 2013 and this book is a continuation of their webcomic series.

What I love about the book is that they don’t pussyfoot around about giving you all the aspects of sex, starting with are you ready for sex, and the definition of sex.

“Sex is being intimate in a erotically arousing or stimulating way with someone else”

Sure that may leave out masturbation and the use of sexual toys in this description but those topics are covered in later chapters.

Having a visual explanation of sexual encounters, that are not gratuitous, that help explain sex is amazing. Especially as these feature all body types, people of different backgrounds. No one is left out an inclusivity is a key factor in this book.

Beyond the act in of it self the book further goes on to talk about one of the hugest issues currently sweeping our cultural landscape, consent. As a youth I never heard about consent or the factors of consent and apparently neither have a lot of folks who have gotten their hands caught in the cookie jar. This can also be tied into another topic that is thankfully covered in this book, sexting. In most states sending nude pictures of a minor anyone below 18 is an offence, even between minors. Yikes. So yeah covering beyond just penises and vulvas; oral, anal, and vaginal sex; and sexual transmitted infections is real sexual health for anybody of any age and this book covers a lot of it and it’ the first one in a three part series of graphic novels!

Educators should definitely bring this book into their administration to see if it can be used for sex education classes or at least as further reading, or in the school’s library. Or if you want to brush up on some things, I mean the way you can…I’ll digress before I get off topic but this should definitely be placed in the buy pile because sexual care/health is wellness for your whole self.
