This issue continues The Gauntlet event with a follow up of Joe Kelly and Max Fiumara’s The Amazing Spider-Man #617, where there is a brand spankin’ new Rhino in town. This new Rhino feels he needs a right of passage and hunts down the original Rhino, Aleksei Sytsevich, with plans of taking the mantle of Rhino by force. Aleksei has found a way to ditch his Rhino skin and his life of crime, and has set out on a life of happiness with a legitimate lifestyle. He has gone straight and has found himself a good job and a good wife. When the new Rhino finds Aleksei and issues a challenge, Spider-Man gets involved and convinces Aleksei to leave it well enough alone and continue down his road to happiness.
As we found out last issue, Peter Parker is out of a job and on the unemployment line. Norah Winters, a reporter for Ben Urich’s Front Line and Peter’s wannabe girlfriend, snatches Pete out of line and takes him along to cover a U.S. naturalization ceremony with her. Aleksei and his wife are in attendance. The new Rhino crashes the party, still bent on having a showdown with the former Rhino so that he can take the mantle with honor.
Mayor Jameson gets the Feds involved and is able to set Aleksei and his wife up in the Witness Relocation Program. The new Rhino intercepts the police convoy heading out of town, and all Hell breaks loose! This new Rhino just won’t give up! Will Spider-Man still be able to convince Aleksei to be the bigger man?
Kelly and Fiumara offer up a gripping and emotional conclusion to what they began in issue #617. Max Fiumara gives us a large dose of pulse-pounding action, while Joe Kelly tugs on our heart strings a little bit. It is the best story of The Gauntlet to date!
The Gauntlet event is going full force now. The two Rhino issues and the Morbius issue (The Amazing Spider-Man #622) are my favorites so far. They give us an equal amount of action and views of the characters’ “human” sides. If you’re not in on The Gauntlet event yet, I suggest you start by picking up #625, and hang on tight! It is far from over, and it is one helluva ride!
If you’re a newbie with the ol’ web head or an old flame renewing your relationship with Spidey picking up this issue, you won’t be sorry!

Even though I dropped Spidey right before this arc started I did say to myself: “self if there was one story from Guantlet I was going to get it would be one featuring the Rhino.” For some reason I’ve always liked the guy and I liked this cover as well.

hi, in ASM #628, Spidey is talking about some Web Fluid/Web Cartridges that he is using to increase his webbing ability. Actually, is it to increase webbing or make web fluid in side his body?, when was it first used?

Shalom, I’m pretty sure it’s to increase the intensity/density of the webbing that was in his current cartridges. If I’m not mistaken, immediately after doing that in this issue, he ran out of webbing.
But I know for sure those things aren’t made in his body!
Shalom, after the One More Day story arc you’re supposed to forget that webbing was ever organic. That whole period of when he developed organic webbing inside his body…well…it never happened.
Wait…WHAT? So the shit with Mephisto also did away with the Spider-Man The Other story line too? I didn’t think they would actually bother to make those kinds of changes.

Weeeeeeeell technically, since the events leading up to the deal with Mephisto didn’t happen, he never could have made the deal. It’s a time paradox.
Unless you were just trying to ignore a really shitty story line, which I support.

In the One More Day story line, when Aunt May was dying, Peter made a deal with the demon Mephisto. Save Aunt May, but give up his marriage to Mary Jane. So Peter and MJ never married, and Aunt May was never shot (because it also erased Peter’s unmasking during Civil War).
Best Rhino Story ever PERIOD.
