Everybody loves Godzilla. No, Godzilla isn’t in this book, but he definitely has influenced it when you see the rampaging monsters across the planet. These monsters have been awakened and will apparently stop at nothing to create chaos and death. Meanwhile, over in Scotland, Lazar is about to open up a can on all the BPRD agents. Out of nowhere, a black dragon swirls around Lazar, and incinerates him! This has the agents baffled, and then all of Lazar’s beastly henchmen crumble into nothing. Two more things. One, an ambulance is speeding down a road in Utah, and the patient tells the medics her name is Liz Sherman. Second, the Black Flame is back, and he’s pissed.
Holy crap! Yeah, the biggest villain in BPRD history is back, and so is Liz Sherman! This has been something that people have been hoping for since Liz went underground a few years ago, and the Black Flame is undoubtedly the biggest villain, and he’s formulated a plan to exact his revenge on all people! Add the giant creatures, the BPRD being in total chaos, and you have a great book! Mignola and Arcudi have done a fabulous job with this series from the perspective of this (and many other) reader!
Artistically, you have the team of Tyler Crook and Dave Stewart. These two guys have been at this series for a while now, and they are a solid team that gets results. Whether it’s a beastly form or the agents in the middle of a battle, they get it done! The characters looked rugged and ready for anything. Cover artist Ryan Sook is another guy that’s been doing a fine job, too. He understands exactly how the BPRD characters should look, and how it’s all about the monsters/villains! Moving toward 2013, the BPRD has nowhere to go but up! Rating 4/5
