Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 2/1/2012

Alpha Girl #1 (Image)
Decapitated Dan:
Loved the art, curious to see where the story goes since I felt it got cut off too fast, but I like it so far.

Action Comics #6 (DC)
NickZ:
What? Did I miss an issue or something? I do love Andy Kubert’s work and the back-up story alone was worth the price of admission.

Amazing Spider-Man #679 (Marvel)
Jeff: A great little time-travel story. Dan Slott is becoming the master of huge epic Spidey stories, and the smaller, character-driven ones too.
Infinite Speech:
Fantastic end to the 2 part arc proving that Peter Parker is just as important as good ole Spidey!

Animal Man #6 (DC)
Andy: So good, and a great jumping on point for new readers. Left you hanging enough to keep chompin’ at the bit for more. I love the family angle Lemire is going with here. Makes this series something special.
Capekiller: Don’t, don’t, don’t believe the hype!
Jeff: I’m officially collecting a DC book. This issue was simply fantastic.

Avengers Academy #25 (Marvel)
Andy: How many times are we going to be threatened with Avengers Academy getting shut down?
Capekiller: Characters I don’t care about fighting a demon from an alternate reality while working with time traveling teammates…..yes, this is as bad as it sounds!
NickZ: I think if I had been reading this book for more than the past 3-4 issues then these events would have had a greater meaning.

Avengers X-Sanction #3 (Marvel)
Andy: Wait… why is Wolverine about to cut up Cable? His best buddy died saving him and Hope not too long ago. WTF?
Arnab: Haters are gonna hate, but I love me some Cable.
Capekiller: This is the best of the three issues so far. Red Hulk gets KTFU!!!!
Infinite Speech: Finally we get to the meat of the story here and with a great fight w/ Red Hulk and Cable!
Jeff: Ok, I’m going to go on record to say that Blaquesmith does not get a shot in on Red Hulk in anyone’s imagination.
NickZ: Summer family reunions are always fun. I’m glad that they are using characters like Blaquesmith and Tyler from Cable’s past to sell this story.

Batman: Detective Comics #6 (DC)
Arnab:
Decent start to the story. Though the ending is tad of a stretch.
NickZ:
Batman got all emotional? What is this world coming to?

Batwing #6 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I was wrong about who Massacre is but I wasn’t wrong about how freakin’ great this book is!
NickZ: This book really is great!! And how awesome did Dick and Damian look in that last panel!

The Boys #63 (Dynamite)
Andy: Easily the best anti-superhero book on the shelves. And now the final battle is finally on the horizon!
Capekiller: Never read this book before today. I am making it my mission to get all the back issues ASAP now!

The Defenders #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: The absolute worst page I have ever seen in a comic takes place in this issue. What the hell were they thinking?

Fear Itself: Fearless #8 (Marvel)
Arnab: I am actually really enjoying this (mini?)-series. Valkyrie is all kinds of awesome and everyone should just stay out of her way.

Futurama #59 (Bongo)
Decapitated Dan: Great issue… again! Soooo like the show, I love it!

G.I. Joe #9 (IDW)
Infinite Speech:
Still waiting for the Joes to get on the offensive but this is still a damn good story. Poor Mainframe.

Invincible #88 (Skybound)
NickZ:
I literally gasped at the ending of this book. If you read superhero books and Invincible is not one of them, you’re doing it wrong.

Justice League International #6 (DC)
NickZ:
So is Batman part of this team or not?…You know, if they are even still alive and all.

Locke & Key Clockworks #4 (IDW)
Decapitated Dan: THE BEAST IS BORN! It is about to get mighty bad up in here. No comic is better written, drawn or colored than this one.
Infinite Speech: WOW! READ THIS SERIES IF YOU ARE NOT DOING SO ALREADY!  It’s DOPE!
Jeff: Ah….so that’s what happened to Dodge.

Magic The Gathering #1 (IDW)
Andy: That was pretty bad. I haven’t played Magic in awhile, but I thought I’d recognize more creatures and names than just a couple locations. Yikes.

Rachel Rising #5 (Abstract Studios)
Jeff: Don’t eff with a scary little girl who says she has a secret friend.

Infinite Speech: I’m waiting on DC to do something with the Milestone Universe besides letting it fade into obscurity w/ wack stories.

Swamp Thing #6 (DC)
Andy: What a tease! Will Swamp Thing ever show up in his own book?
Arnab: Geezus! What an issue. First the Parliament, then Abby, what more must Alec suffer through? Oh right, he has to turn into the Swamp Thing 🙂

Sweet Tooth #30 (Vertigo)
Andy: If you’re loving Animal Man, pick up this issue of Sweet Tooth. While I’d advise beginning at the beginning, this issue is a great jump on point.

The Twelve #9 (Marvel)
Capekiller: I might have like this book three years ago when it was supposed to come out……..

Uncanny X-Men #6 (Marvel)
Andy: Getting better, but still nowhere near as good as Wolverine and the X-Men… and what’s with all the Michael Bay-like explosions in the X-books lately?
Arnab: Anyone else getting sick of seeing Betsy in almost every book?
Capekiller: This is not bad. For the haters, put it down and give it a re-read. I like the ideas pushing this book.
Jeff: What began as a great tie-in to the Dark Angel Saga has become another pointless X-Men adventure that fits more in Adjectiveless than here.
NickZ:
Magneto cracked me up in this issue. These new life forms are interesting in so many ways.

Uncanny X-Force #21 (Marvel)
Andy: Coolest. Cover. Ever.
Arnab: This story is boring me. I didn’t like the original Nightcrawler, and this one is annoying the crap out of me. WTF is wrong with Betsy? And does Remender hate Deadpool or something?
Capekiller: This was pure brilliance! I thought the previous arc was good, this arc is great! Deep, layered writing by Remender and fantastic dream-like art by Tocchini. Bravo gentlemen!
Infinite Speech: It took 21 issues to get to one that I really didn’t care for. But that’s also because I’m not a big Captain Britain fan.
Jeff: This was the first issue of X-Force that didn’t blow my mind. I’m afraid….

Venom #13 (Marvel)
Andy: A solid start to this major character cross-over event. A little wordy, but cool art and I dig the horror themes.
Infinite Speech: Liking how these four characters are being brought together but I’m nervous about how this team up will play out.
NickZ: My first issue of Venom and I must say I’m impressed, even though I will always be an Eddie Brock man, myself.

Winter Soldier #1 (Marvel)
Arnab: Solid issue. The story was strong, though a tad stale at some points, but the art more than makes up for it.
Capekiller: Bucky should be nobody but the Winter Soldier. Brubaker still puts me to sleep with his writing.
Infinite Speech: Yeah, I’m hooked!

X-Club #3 (Marvel)
Andy: Zzzzzzz… OH! What? I’m sorry? Were you saying something? WHAT!? There’s still TWO more issues of this???
Capekiller: Science, sex and Nazis…Mr. Spurrier, you had at “mecaphile” good sir!
NickZ:
This is how I like my nerds… awkward and funny.

X-Factor #231 (Marvel)
Andy: Solo Madrox stories don’t come along often, but when they do, they’re easy to get into.
Arnab: Absolutely fantastic stuff here. Alternate Universes, Deathlok Captain America, dying Madroxes, what more could you want?
Jeff: Madrox doing some reality-hopping is so much fun. What a ride!
NickZ:
All I have to say is three words: “No more humans.”

Be sure to catch up on all past Chirps here!
