Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 11/21/12

“Amazing Spider-Man” #698 (Marvel)
Andy: Woah. That’s messed up. I’ll be onboard as long as the stakes continue
feeling high. (4/5) #Spiderman
Jeff:
A simply AMAZING direction done by a SUPERIOR writer!
NickZ: READ THIS ISSUE! Love it or hate it, it cannot be denied! (I loved it btw)

“Astonishing X-Men” #56 (Marvel)
Arnab: Finally! This was an arc that was way too long. Karma stopped her sister from killing her father (who’s on death’s door) but couldn’t stop him from from killing her sister. What a fail. B
Jeff:
Finally an ending to this way too long story. Liu needs to pick it up in the next arc or this book will be on the chopping block.
NickZ: My thought while reading this was: “When did I stop caring about this story… oh, right. I never did.”

“Avengers” #34 (Marvel)
Jeff: It’s stories like these that made me not like Avengers pre-Bendis. I hate the Wasp and Wonder Man.

“Batwoman” #14 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: Can this team up last forever? A

“Birds of Prey” #14 (DC)
NickZ: Katana is awesome, it’s no wonder she’s getting her own book.

“Bravest Warriors” #2 (BOOM!)
Andy: Two issues in a row now I’ve laughed out loud. Win. (3.5/5) #BravestWarriors

“Captain America” #1 (Marvel)
Andy: JRJR’s best stuff in awhile — nice coloring, too. Feels a lot like
Duane Swierczynski’s “Cable” run. (3.5/5) #CaptainAmerica #MarvelNOW
Jeff:
Some of the best JRJR/Janson/White art I’ve seen, but unfortunately, the story didn’t grab me enough to stick around.

“Captain Marvel” #7 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: Two Captain Marvels teaming up and it’s with one of my favorite Nextwave characters! A

“Catwoman” #14 (DC)
Arnab:
I feel like maybe the Joker takes steroids. Also, in the newDC, Catwoman’s not that particularly important in Batman’s life. B
NickZ: Joker and Catwoman play a game of cat and mouse that results in some interesting revelations about both.

“Clone” #1 (Image)
Andy: I hope the next issue successfully builds on this entertaining start. Cool art by Juan Jose Ryp. (3/5) #Clone

“Comeback” #1 (Image)
Andy: The stakes are high, the characters are alive and the concept’s fresh. Sci-fi noir with serious potential. (4/5) #Comeback

“Dark Avengers” #183 (Marvel)
Andy: Why’s this series getting the snub by #MarvelNOW? It’s been solid since Parker’s run began during the Heroic Age. (3/5) #DarkAvengers

“Deadpool” #2 (Marvel)
Arnab:
This book feels more overtly ludicrous than its previous version, but a the same time it’s also more serious. It’s a strange balance. It’s not bad, but it’s not fantastic yet either. B+
Dr. Bustos: Undead Teddy Roosevelt and Deadpool fight it out in a zoo, need I say more? A
NickZ:
This book is missing the wit and intelligence that is Daniel Way.

“Edgar Allan Poe’s The Conquerer Worm” #1 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Things that squirm already freak me out, then add Corben’s art and holy hell. Creepy. (3/5) #Poe

“Fables” #123 (Vertigo)
Andy: An example of why Bigby Wolf is such a mother fucking badass today. Also, thank the Maker the “Oz” story’s almost over. (3.5/5) #Fables

“Glory” #30 (Image)
Andy: Love the art in this book. Ross Campbell kicks the crap out of action sequences. (4/5) #Glory

“Harbinger” #6 (Valiant)
Andy: Each line sounds like it matters. A jumping on point worthy of  everyone who reads superhero comics. (4.5/5) #Harbinger #Valiant

“Hawkeye” #4 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: Why would you carry most of your most vital stuff in a single container? A

“Indestructible Hulk” #1 (Marvel)
Andy: A promising new spin on Hulk that makes you ask: “How was this never done before?” (4/5) #MarvelNOW #Hulk
Jeff:
A really great new status quo for Banner & the Hulk. I like seeing Banner not be a whiny victim all the time.

‘It Girl” #4 (Image)
Andy: The best issue so far — good thing, too, because it was losing me. (3/5) #ItGirl

“Journey into Mystery” #646 (Marvel)
Andy: Marvel’s strongest leading lady right NOW! Valerio Schiti brings his “A” game. (3.5/5) #Sif #MarvelNOW

“Judge Dredd” #1 (IDW)
Dr. Bustos: It feels like it could be a Saturday morning cartoon with the plot of robot take over. B

“Justice League” #14 (DC)
NickZ: I still can’t take Aquaman serious as a badass. The Superman and Wonder Woman scene at the farm was great. Also, can Batman be anymore of creepy creeperson?

“Minimum Carnage Omega” #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: I love all the players involved but this crossover was disappointing at best.

“Nightwing” #14 (DC)
Arnab:
There needed to be a bit more Shiva in this. B
NickZ: I was only interested in the Joker cameo at the end.

“Number 13” #0 (Dark Horse)
Andy: A great post-apocalyptic read from out of nowhere. I want to know more about this future Earth and who these people are. (4/5) #Number13

“Red Hood and the Outlaws” #14 (DC)
Arnab:
I really don’t like Superman. B
NickZ: Could this issue kiss Superman’s ass anymore? Sheesh! Can’t wait to see Jason and Joker face off. (Get it, because the Joker’s face is…ah, never mind.)

“Revival” #5 (Image)
Jeff: This might have been the best issue since #1, but something is not really clicking for me.

“Spike: A Dark Place” #4 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: Has love made Spike it’s “bitch” again? He seems to be a fool for it.

“Supergirl” #14 (DC)
NickZ: Supergirl finally accepts Clark as her cousin and now she is already about to betray his trust!

“Sword of Sorcery Featuring Amethyst” #2 (DC)
Andy: Started out with a heaping load of expo but quickly spun into action. The “Rotworld” nod was cool, too. (3/5) #Amethyst

“Ultimate Comics Spider-Man” #17 (Marvel)
Andy: Ignoring my issue with Myles being a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative without training, this issue was kick ass. (4/5) #Spiderman
Dr. Bustos:
A lot of this war makes no sense since I’m not reading any of the other books, but Spidey versus War Machine is fun to watch! B+
Jeff: This “United We Stand” event is hindering this book.

”Ultimate Comics X-Men” #18.1 (Marvel)
Andy: Since it re-launched, this series feels like it’s going nowhere. There’re enough whiny mutants in the 616. (2/5) #XMen

“Uncanny X-Force” #34 (Marvel)
Arnab: If Wolverine could be killed by drowning, why hasn’t anyone just dropped him into the middle of the ocean? Also, this guy who just killed his own son is the same guy that Marvel chose to give a speech at Xavier’s funeral. Riiiiight, that makes sense. B
Andy: If that loose end of Wolverine’s is truly tied up, I’m a little sad, but characters need to die in this book. (5/5) #XForce
Jeff: Good grief, what more can Remender do to these characters?
NickZ: Heartbreaking… and I don’t really like either of these dudes.

“Wolverine” #316 (Marvel)
Jeff: Yes! Return to the original whiskers-costume! Love it!
NickZ: I really love that Wolverine’s exes have formed a team.

“Wonder Woman” #14 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: Wonder Woman shows that love can conquer all and the New Gods are getting involved! A+
NickZ: Wonder Woman, Greek Gods, AND the New Gods! What more could you ask for?

“Wolverine & the X-Men” #21 (Marvel)
Andy: A very strange story but Aaron makes it all work somehow. Not for the casual X-fan, though. (3/5) #XMen
Dr. Bustos:
Evil circus run by a witch and Frankenstein’s Creature with brainwashed X-Men as side shows? Yes, please. A+
NickZ: Quentin Quire’s shirt was AWESOME! Everything else about this issue was not.
Jeff: Nick Bradshaw needs to do some research on what these characters are supposed to look like. Was that supposed to be Rockslide?

“X-Factor” #247 (Marvel)
Arnab: A nice, fun, story to make up for all that death and drama in “Breaking Point.” A
Andy: Works as a tie-in without actually being a tie-in. Marvelites — read this. (4/5) #XFactor
Jeff: Not the strongest issue…I feel like PAD is in a holding pattern.
NickZ: Fun little caper for Mr. and Mrs. Madrox.

“X-O Manowar” #7 (Valiant)
Andy: Lots of filler here for the impending battle that’s set to commence in #9. Can’t wait for that! (3/5) #XOManowar #Valiant
