Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 11/14/12

“Adventure Time Presents: Marceline and the Scream Queens” #5 (kaboom!)
Dr. Bustos: This comic should be called “Marceline does not take criticism well” and it’d be more accurate. C
NickZ:
Marceline: The hottest vampire rockstar in the universe.

“All-New X-Men” #1 (Marvel)
Arnab: If Beast isn’t dead by the end of this, Bendis will have disappointed me. That aside, this was a fantastic start, I just wish there was one X-book that didn’t have Logan in it. A-
Infinite Speech: Bendis and Immonen do an excellent job and Beast looks cool again. However, regardless of the decade Scott is still a jerk.
Jeff: I just love this concept. Bendis sets up so many great plot threads in the matter of a few pages.
NickZ: Jean Grey is alive and the X-Men are BACK! Fantastic!
Andy: Totally awesome and I’m pumped for Bendis to write more Iceman! To nitpick: I want Kiden back, not Eva. (4.5/5) #XMen #MarvelNOW

“Amazing Spider-Man” #687 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I guess if “natural causes” can’t kill Aunt May then Doc Ock should be around forever as well. Loved the Hobgoblin banter throughout the issue though!
Jeff: A lackluster finish to the arc with some of the worst art I’ve seen on this book.
Andy: Camuncoli’s artwork has come a long way since his “Daken” stuff. I’m onboard for the countdown to #700. (3.5/5) #SpiderMan

“Ame-Comi Girls: Batgirl” #2 (DC)
Andy: The art’s great, but this whole thing resides in the awkward phase in-between PG & Not-PG. (2.5/5) #Batgirl

“Archer & Armstrong #4 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Another kick ass issue? Of course it was!
Jeff: A & A save the world, but at what cost? This book is really wonderful.
Andy: Mary-Maria had my interest — looking forward to seeing what happens with her. (3.5/5) #Valiant

“Batgirl” #14 (DC)
Arnab: Honestly, I think Barbara needs to worry more about James Jr. than Joker. A-
NickZ: It’s Babs’ worst nightmare as she comes face to literal face with the Joker!
Andy: Joker’s eyes in this issue will give you nightmares. (3.5/5) #Batgirl

“Batman” #14 (DC)
Arnab: Joker is back and he’s F’n more awesome than he’s ever been. A
Dr. Bustos: Joker’s new gimmick was gross at first, now it’s just dumb looking. D
Infinite Speech: Very creepy and I’m going to need the payoff of this arc to be HUGE since the build up has been quite intense.
Jeff: This is one of the best Joker stories ever written and drawn. Absolutely frightening and superb!
NickZ: I can already tell this is going to be one of the top Batman stories of all time! For the first time ever, I fear the Joker and I fear for the Bat-family.
Andy: I’m legitimately worried for every member of the Bat-family — especially Alfred. Scott Snyder’s on a twisted roll here. (4.5/5) #Batman

“Batman and Robin” #14 (DC)
Arnab: This was decent up until the very end, when it became ridiculous. B-
NickZ: The dynamic duo fight human zombies, but who’s behind it?
Andy: Oof. This was a rough storyline to get through — glad it’s over and “Death of the Family” is next. (1.5/5) #Batman

“Bloodshot” #5 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Remember when the Punisher was really cool and mattered? Well, that’s Bloodshot NOW! Seriously fun issue!
Andy: I like Bloodshot’s small list of allies, but I hope he finds what he’s looking for soon. (3/5) #Bloodshot #Valiant

“The Boys” #72 (Dynamite)
Andy: This series goes down as the best superhero spoof of all-time. A satisfying ending. (3/5) #TheBoys

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” Season 9 #15 (Dark Horse Comics)
NickZ: In a world without magic and new slayer emerges and it’s a BOY… and a gay boy to boot!

“Conan the Barbarian” #10 (Dark Horse)
Andy: I miss Belit being out of her element in Cimmeria, but Conan being out of his again is fun to read. (3.5/5) #Conan

“Doctor Who/Star Trek: The Next Generation: Assimilation” #7 (IDW)
Dr. Bustos: It was interesting to see the Doctor exploring a Borg ship, too bad it didn’t have much going on. B
NickZ: The Doctor meets Locutus in the past and the Cybermen become overwhelming in the future.

“Fantastic Four “#1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: So Fraction is mixing in a little Lost in Space
Jeff: For all of you who think I am unreasonably biased against Matt Fraction….maybe he was meant to write Fantastic Four and nothing else! This was great!
Andy: I really liked this & hope Fraction continues making it his own. Bagley’s art is the right fit. (3.5/5) #FantasticFour #MarvelNOW

“First X-Men” #4 (Marvel)
Jeff: Not worth the chirp.
NickZ: Pointless series with bad art.

“Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.” #14 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: I’ll miss that vampire they finally gave some fun time to hang out with. B+
Andy: The artwork in this series is consistently excellent. I hope the death here isn’t permanent. (3/5) #Frankenstein

“Gambit” #5 (Marvel)
Arnab: Gambit being Gambit, means Gambit being awesome. I love the touches of humor in this book. B+
Dr. Bustos: I did enjoy the call out to trying to call on Superman from his fall. B
Jeff: Yes! Back to heists! And the return of a really cool X-character.
NickZ: Gambit can’t seem to stay out of trouble and soon, it looks like he will be crossing swords with Pete Wisdom.

“Great Pacific” #1 (Image)
Andy: A strong first issue — sends a clear message but doesn’t preach it. (3.5/5) #GreatPacific

“Green Lantern Corps” #14 (DC)
Andy: Getting burnt out on the extraneous “GL” stuff. Salaak is the biggest chump in the DC Universe. (2/5) #GreenLantern

“Invincible” #97 (Image)
Dr. Bustos: That certainly went places, lots of violence, acknowledgement of violence, and then a little more plot development. B?
NickZ: Some real controversial stuff goes down in this issue and some major Mark and Eve sexy time leads to a big… climax.

“Legion Lost” #14 (DC)
NickZ: Superboy, the Ravagers, and the Legion of Super-Heroes join forces with… Harvest!?!

“Locke & Key Omega” #1 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: I’m going to have a love/hate thing going on with this series. Love that it’s still awesome. Hate that it’s the end.
Jeff: As much as I loved this issue, it was ridiculously dependent on things that I have long forgotten.

“New Avengers” #33 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Doctor Strange draws a line in the astral plane and calls out Brother Voodoo’s…um…brother! To the effin’ death! Or as close as a character will come to it in the Marvel Universe.
Jeff: Oeming needs to be on a regular Marvel book. Period.

“Punk Rock Jesus” #5 (Vertigo)
Jeff: Sean Murphy draws the crap out of motorcycles. This book is wonderful.

“The Ravagers” #6 (DC)
NickZ: Superboy and the Ravagers take on some old N.O.W.H.E.R.E. “friends”, while Red Robin keeps a close eye on things.

“Red She-Hulk” #59 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: Gotta love the “we’re having a misunderstanding so we gotta fight!” scenario, tried and true it is. A
Andy: Parker does his best to keep things interesting, but superheroes unnecessarily fighting each other is annoying. (2/5) #Hulk

“Red Sonja” #71 (Dynamite)
Andy: Some cool moments in this final issue of the current arc, but lacks any sense of urgency or concern for the protagonist. (2/5) #RedSonja

“Saga” #7 (Image)
Arnab: Hot F’n Damn. Shit is going down all over the universe. A
Dr. Bustos: I absolutely adore this reality’s magic system and how all the different creatures interact. A+
Infinite Speech: BKV and Staples just kicked the status quo in the balls with this series!
Jeff: Here’s a quote from Infinite Speech: “NO FRACKIN’ HINTS ABOUT BOOKS I HAVE NOT EVEN READ YET!! SHEESH! DO I HAVE TO…KICK YOU GUYS IN THE NUTS?!” Yep. He said “nuts.”
NickZ: If you are not reading this book by now, you’re a dumdum.
Andy: Fiona Staples’ art tells a story of its own, and the writing of Marko’s parents hit all the right beats. My favorite issue. (5/5) #Saga

“Shinku” TPB (Image)
Infinite Speech: What’s better than reading the monthly series of Shinku? Reading the first 5 issues all at once and getting some awesome artistic bonuses at the end!

“Suicide Squad” #14 (DC)
NickZ: Joker and Harley have a reunion of sorts but this time he’s no Puddin’!
Andy: A decent filler issue for Harley fans, but not a “Death of the Family” must-read. (2.5/5) #SuicideSquad

“Superboy” #14 (DC)
NickZ: H’EL on Earth begins as Superboy and the Titans get their asses handed to them.

“Think Tank” #4 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Not reading this title? You’re going to wish you had. Seriously it makes you smarter just like the tag line says!

“Thor: God of Thunder” #1 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: “There is always someone somewhere in need of smiting with a very large hammer. And Thor is always happy to oblige.” A+
Infinite Speech: Thor plays detective and we get a glimpse of him as a one armed king. Jason Aaron has impressed with this issue.
Jeff: This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Ribic and White are masters.
Andy: Holy Hel — I just read a Thor story where the tasks Thor tackles are truly Thor-worthy. Nice! (4/5) #Thor #MarvelNOW

“Venom” #27 (Marvel)
NickZ: Venom and Scarlet Spider try to save the Mircoverse from Carnage and his tiny clones.

“The Walking Dead” #104 (Image)
Arnab: Carl is a kid, so I can’t call him a complete idiot. But I can blame this on Rick, so I do.
Jeff: A great new direction we haven’t seen before…the adventures of Carl!
NickZ: CARL! Why can’t you just STAY IN THE EFFING HOUSE?
Andy: An unusually awkward issue of TWD. Not buying into Rambo Carl just yet. (2.5/5) #WalkingDead

“Wolverine & the X-Men” #20 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: I hope to see more of this Shark-Girl, also, did I miss when Angel got his metal wings back? A
Infinite Speech: Mudbug huh? Wow….I could have skipped this and bought something else
Jeff: This was an unexpected issue, but I loved every minute of it.
NickZ: This book is beyond ridiculous. Can they make up more lame new mutants? Ask Bendis for help because he is doing it right over in his X-book.
Andy: Shark girl’s kind of cool because she’s a shark, but this new Angel bores me to death. (2/5) #XMen #Wolverine

“X-Men Legacy” #1 (Marvel)
Jeff: Not sure if I care enough about Legion to like this.
NickZ: This is looking to be very interesting. I can’t wait to see where it goes and what becomes of Legion.
Andy: A bold move to feature Legion in an X-book, but how many casual X-readers will give it a shot? (2/5) #XMen #MarvelNOW

“X-Treme X-Men” #6 (Marvel
NickZ: I’m unsure if I want to stay on with this book.
