Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 11/28/12

“A + X” #2 (Marvel)
Andy: The Iron Man & Shadowcat team up wins. Fun and worthwhile for fans of all four characters featured. (3/5) #MarvelNOW #Shadowcat #IronMan
Jeff: Finally, it’s proven that Kitty can beat Iron Man in a fight!
NickZ: This is just a fun “popcorn” book. All flash, no substance. Pretty art though.

“Adventure Time” #10 (Boom!)
NickZ: Choose your own Adventure Time was pretty crazy and a bit confusing, but math, nonetheless.

“All New X-Men” #2 (Marvel)
Andy: This is the X-book I’ve been wanting since returning to comics in 2002. (5/5) #XMen #MarvelNOW
Arnab: There are two things I want to see come of this. 1. Bobby Drake realizes that Scott is right. 2. Beast dies. Also, when did Kitty become a “genius”? A
Infinite Speech: There is a glaring mistake in this issue but aside from that I’m on board for what this creative team is doing
Jeff: This is exactly what I want in a Bendis-written X-Men book! Fantastic!
NickZ: The original X-Men are back and I couldn’t be happier!

“American Vampire” #33 (Vertigo)
Andy: Scott Snyder blew the doors off with this one — emotionally charged with resolution. The future looks wild. (4.5/5) #AmericanVampire
Arnab:
Geezus fuck. Pardon my language, but there’s really no other way to express all my feelings after this issue. A
Jeff: This feels like the perfect time to be done with this book.

“Aquaman” #14 (DC)
Andy: A good prequel issue to “Throne of Atlantis,” giving promise to the upcoming “Justice League” crossover. (3.5/5) #Aquaman

“Astonishing X-Men Annual” #1 (Marvel)
Arnab: Gage writes a strong X-team book. Being married to a superhero, who has no secret identity, is like asking to be attacked. B+
Jeff: Gage and Baldeon need to be on the main title. This was a great issue!
NickZ: The only thing harder than life as an X-Man, is life as the significant other of an X-Man.

“Batman the Dark Knight” #14 (DC)
Arnab: This arc started off strong. That is all. It’s should have ended with this issue, or rather last issue. C
NickZ: Batman must face his fears as we realize this story is going on a bit longer than it needs to.

“Bart Simpson” #77 (Bongo)
Andy: Comic Book Guy. What a dick. (2.5/5) #Simpsons

“Batman Incorporated” #5 (DC)
Andy: Future Damian as Batman stories are the best — especially with Burnham’s art. Also, best cover of the week. (4/5) #Batman
Arnab: Poor Damian. A
NickZ
: Damian majorly effs things up as future Batman… no surprise there.

“Bedlam” #2 (Image)
Andy: I’m not on the Nick Spencer sauce — two issues in, and like “Morning Glories,” I don’t get it. Cool art, though. (1.5/5) #Bedlam
Jeff: What the crap was that opening sequence? Creepy! This book is insane!

“Before Watchmen: Ozymandias” #4 (DC)
NickZ: Ozzy starts to find the “super-hero” life unfulfilling and begins to dream bigger.

“Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre” #4 (DC)
Andy: Overall, a good mid-road read with great artwork by Amanda Conner. Wish it wasn’t Watchmen-related. (3/5) #Watchmen
NickZ: Laurie’s life is made miserable by all three “parental” figures in her life.. “for her own good”.

“Chew” #30 (Image)
Arnab: Holy smack in a cracker barrel. This issue is perfect. A+
Jeff: Wow, this took a sad but crazy turn! A flawless issue.
NickZ: WTH! It’s the half way point on this book and it’s insane!

“Double Jumpers” #3 (Action Lab)
Infinite Speech: Hahahaha! So…if Danielle dies in the real world then she..um..dies. Another great issue!

“FF” #1 (Marvel)
Andy: An amusing idea, but how is it going to stretch over an entire series? Answer: Something awful will happen. Soon. (3/5) #FF #MarvelNOW
Jeff: Despite what Infinite Speech says, Mike Allred can do no wrong in my eyes. This book was so much fun!

“The Flash” #14 (DC)
Arnab: Buccellato and Manapul take comic booking to a whole new level. Their story and artwork is perfectly suited for the comic book medium and this issue is an example of why comics still rock. A
NickZ: Even with the help of his Rogues, can Flash stop a speed-force powered Grodd?

“Gambit” #6 (Marvel)
Arnab: This book is fantastic. Asums is writing up a Gambit storm here and it is awesome. A-
Jeff: Asmus continues to put Remy in tough situations. The best Gambit series I’ve read.
NickZ: Asmus and Neves continue to keep Gambit entertaining for me. That’s saying a lot!

“Ghost” #2 (Dark Horse)
Andy: I want to like it more than I do. It’s just really… bland. And slow. (2/5) #Ghost

“Masks” #1 (Dynamite Entertainment)
Andy: This works. As expected, Alex Ross’ artwork is great, but Roberson nicely tying it all together was a pleasant surprise. (3.5/5) #Masks
Infinite Speech: Bringing all of these characters together in one series is just plain effin’ awesome!

“Morning Glories” #23 (Image)
Jeff: I’m going to give this book until issue #25 and if I’m still as lost as I am now, then I’m done.

“My Little Pony” #1 (IDW)
Andy: Gave it a whirl because it’s my job, and surprisingly[!] it’s not for me. My daughter, yes. But not me. (2/5) #MyLittlePony

“New Avengers” #34 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
The final issue ends w/ a LOT of Doc Strange action and surprisingly I liked it!
Jeff:
Ok, the only thing Bendis had to put back in place was Dr. Strange’s status as Sorcerer Supreme. He can check that off now.

“Nowhere Men” #1 (Image)
Andy: What the heck is this all about? I’m not sure, but the last page makes me want to stick around. (3/5) #NowhereMen

“Planetoid” #4 (Image)
Andy: One of the best man vs robot fights I’ve seen in comics. What are some others? (4/5) #Planetoid

“Prophet” #31 (Image)
Andy: If you call yourself a sci-fi fan and aren’t reading this, you’re lying to yourself. Cool backup story, too. (5/5) #Prophet #scifi

“Red Hood and the Outlaws” #14 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Superman is only cool now when he’s surrounded by much cooler characters and it doesn’t get much cooler than Red Hood and his crew.

“Secret Avengers” #34 (Marvel)
Jeff: Remender’s juggling a little too much in this issue. Felt unfocused.
NickZ: As Hawkeye and Captain Britain face a universe of undead heroes, a robot apocalypse seems to be starting on Earth.

“Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – The Prisoner of Bogan” #1 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech:
MUST READ FOR ALL STAR WARS FANS! PERIOD!

“Superman” #14 (DC)
Andy: Read this after “Supergirl” #14. It’s not flawless, but works — I’m on board in anticipation of something cool happening. (3/5) #Superman #Supergirl
NickZ: What happens when the combined power of Superman, Supergirl and Superboy are not enough to stop H’el?

“Talon” #2 (DC)
Andy: If you’re a Bat-fan who hasn’t checked this book out yet, get on board — Calvin Rose is growing on me. Ryp’s art kicks ass. (3/5) #Talon
NickZ: Calvin and Clark take their first strike at the Court of Owls but can they even trust each other?

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” #16 (IDW)
Andy: Slash is awesome and this kicked shell! With a final page like that I can’t rule out an IDW “Mighty Mutanimals” series. (4/5) #TMNT
Infinite Speech: How many ninja turtles does it take to beat Slash? A hell of a lot more than four! Another great issue!

“Teen Titans” #14 (DC)
Arnab: This group of kids needs to reel it all in and start trusting each other. Sheesh. A
Infinite Speech: Nice wrap up to Wonder Girl’s origin now can we get to something a bit more exciting please?
NickZ: The three-way..adventure between Cassie, Red Robin and Superboy continues to entertain, but by the end of this issue, you’ll see that the “fun” is just getting started.

“Thor: God of Thunder” #2 (Marvel)
Andy: Keep this coming. Can’t believe I’m really enjoying a “Thor” comic. (4/5) #Thor #MarvelNOW
Jeff: Esad Ribic’s artwork is exquisite. A perfect fit for Thor!

“Thun’da” #4 (Dynamite)
Andy: Thun’da’s the Rambo of the Jungle, but in this version he’s the inaccurate Rambo of the Jungle who has Daddy issues. (2/5) #Thunda

“Transformers Prime: Rage of the Dinobots” #1 (IDW)
Andy: The only Dinobot I care about was on “Beast Wars.” Why isn’t that a comic? (2/5)  #Transformers #Dinobot #BeastWars

“Uncanny Avengers” #2 (Marvel)
Andy: Blows #1 out of the water — Remender is showing his chops and knowledge of Marvel history. (5/5) #Avengers #XMen #MarvelNOW
Infinite Speech: I like how the Red Skull is being written as a modern day racist and also instinctively knows to put his finger to his temple to activate his telepathic powers. Good series so far.
Jeff: This didn’t pack the punch of issue 1, but it was still a strong issue.
NickZ: I’m on the fence about this book. How was Red Skull able to master his new found abilities so quickly?

“Wolverine Max” #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: More crappy Wolverine history that no one cares about.

“X-Men: Legacy” #2 (Marvel)
Andy: This is bad. Why would anyone be interested in this as an ongoing? The excessive swearing was unnecessary. (1/5) #XMen #MarvelNOW
Jeff: Nope. This ain’t working.
NickZ: I like how they have always had Legion trying different ways to control his powers and personalities. I hope he gets a purpose soon so this series can really take off.

“X-Treme X-Men” #7 (Marvel)
NickZ: Dazzler + Parallel words = lame.
