Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 10/10/12

“Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens” #4 (kaboom!)
Dr. Bustos: It was a cute visit to the (most of the time) undersea kingdom. B

“Ame-Comi Girls: Wonder Woman” #1 (DC)
Andy: The Amanda Conner/Jimmy Palmiotti team up entertains once more. Conner’s expressions rule. (3.5/5) #WonderWoman

“Archer & Armstrong” #3 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech:
Love the way this story is developing and the laughs that come along with it!
Jeff: This book just keeps getting funnier, more action packed, and really, really good.
Andy: The bigger picture keeps revealing itself through Van Lente’s crafty writing and clever character work. (4/5) #Valiant

“Avengers” #31 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
Wonder Man took out Red Hulk with a sleeper hold and any guesses on who the mysterious Avengers is?
Jeff: So Wonder Man is a good guy again? And he took out Red Hulk? What?

“AvX: Consequences” #1 (Marvel)
Arnab: “Killed anyone lately”-Wolverine. That’s like a prostitute calling the Queen Elizabeth II a whore. C-
Jeff: I kinda wish all these artists would agree on what Cyclops’ prison visor looks like.
Andy: As a Cyclops fan the AVX fallout is kind of a bummer. That bias aside, this is some of Gillen’s best work. (4/5) #AVX

“Batgirl” #13 (DC)
Arnab: Satisfying conclusion to Knightfall. Loved Joker’s arrival. A-
Andy: Knightfall is a villain I want to see more of. A loose “Death Of The Family” tie-in but strong on its own. (4/5) #Batman

“Batman” #13 (DC)
Arnab: When the Joker comes to town, everyone takes notice and everyone. A
Dr. Bustos:
So how long until they get rid of this iteration of Joker? C-
Infinite Speech: Doesn’t the door to Wayne Manor have a peep hole?
Jeff: Now that is the Joker we’ve all been waiting for!
Andy: A thrilling start for “Death of the Family” — Snyder instantly ups the stakes for the leads, driving home the terror. (4.5/5) #Batman

“Batman and Robin” #13 (DC)
Arnab: Best portrayal of Damian since the beginning of this series. A-
Decapitated Dan:
Zombies huh? Interesting. Could have saved time and left out that mushy father son crap at the start though. Good issue, glad I read it.
Andy: This was a weird one playing to the season with “zombies” in Gotham. Did you know Bruce has a rocket ship? (2/5) #Batman

“Bloodshot” #4 (Valiant)
Andy: If you’re reading all the Valiant titles it’s a more rewarding experience — the crossover elements are seamless. (4/5) #Valiant #Bloodshot
Infinite Speech: Things are starting to connect with other titles the level of cool has been elevated for this title! Start reading it!

“Conan the Barbarian” #9 (Dark Horse)
Andy: A universally readable Conan issue and one of Wood’s best to date. This series has character. (4/5) #Conan

“Evil Ernie” #1 (Dynamite)
Decapitated Dan: Not that I really cared for the character before, but I figured it’s a fresh start and I would check it out. Now I am wishing I hadn’t.
Andy: A pregnant woman is launched from her car into a bus and a child’s head explodes all by page 3. WTF. (1.5/5) #EvilErnie

“Fantastic Four” #611 (Marvel)
Arnab: Jonathan Hickman’s epic run on “Fantastic Four” comes to a glorious end. A

“First X-Men” #3 (Marvel)
Jeff: I have to say, the art was better this issue, but this mini-series overall is going nowhere fast.

“Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.” #13 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: I like that Frankenstein is some sort of entity removed from the Red, Green, and the Rot. A
Andy: It’s cool to see Frank roped into the Rotworld stuff but some familiar faces from The Red would help. (3/5) #Frankenstein

“Green Lantern Corps” #13 (DC)
Andy: Hopefully, John Stewart does something awesome soon. (3/5) #GreenLantern

“Halloween Eve” #1 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Awesome story and great artwork really makes you sad it’s only a one shot!

“Haunted Horrors” #1 (IDW)
Decapitated Dan: Ever wonder why old school horror comics are the shit? This book will explain why. A great collection of Pre-Code that is not to be missed. A steal for the price. Book of the Week!
Andy: For fans with a guilty pleasure for old school comics, this anthology is a classically chilling experience. (4/5) #Haunted #Horror

Invincible Iron Man” #526 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: It’s as if Fraction read my mind and brought back all the awesome superheroes from other places. A
Infinite Speech: Things have definitely picked up and it’s for the better!

“Mega Man” #18 (Archie)
Andy: A solid comic book for the kiddos, dealing well with grown-up themes. No Mega Man, though. (3/5) #MegaMan

“Morning Glories” #22 (Image)
Jeff: All the bad guys are good guys and all the good guys are bad guys.

“Phantom Stranger” #1 (DC)
Decapitated Dan: While the art is nice, the story makes me snore. Not that I had high hopes for this one, but still a slow start in my book.
Andy: Haven’t read much of this character before, and I’m interested, but what’s with his commitment to the “Voice?” (2.5/5) #PhantomStranger

“Point of Impact” #1 (Image)
Decapitated Dan: Now that was interesting. A good deal of mystery to be solved here, check it out if that is your kind of thing. Great artwork.
Andy: Not a bad start but runs the risk of being average. (3/5) #PointOfImpact

“Punk Rock Jesus” #4 (Vertigo)
Jeff: Sean Murphy’s Jesus is offensive, subversive, and socially unacceptable. A lot like Jesus was in his day.

“Red She-Hulk” #58 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: I hope Betty gets to team up with the two superheroes who show up in this book. B
Andy: Parker gets off to a solid start with this new direction, showing promise. But how long can it last? (3/5) #MarvelNOW

“Scarlet Spider” #10 (Marvel)
Decapitated Dan: 2 issues into this mini crossover and I am out. Not interesting at all.
Infinite Speech: Enjoying it but not as much as I built it up in my mind.

“Secret Avengers” #32 (Marvel)
Jeff: Venom and Valkyrie get close in more than just their placement in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics” #5 (IDW)
Andy: It’s fun to revisit these oldies with a new look — did you know the Turtles fired laser guns? LASER GUNS! (2.5/5) #TMNT

“Think Tank” #3 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Exceeded my expectations!

“Transfusion” #1 (IDW)
Decapitated Dan: Thank you sirs may I have another! This issue was amazing.
Andy: This is horrifying, from the artwork to the minimal script. Everyone can appreciate this. (4/5) #Transfusion

“Ultimate Comics X-Men” #17 (Marvel)
Andy: Why is Armor introduced when she’s hardly developed in the 616 Universe? Wood should write her there. (2.5/5) #XMen

“Uncanny Avengers” #1 (Marvel)
Arnab: Xavier erased a “dead” brother from Scott’s mind, he deserved a much more painful death. Remender and and Aaron are clearly part of a threeway Logan lovefest. With Logan. F
Dr. Bustos: This is going to be a wacky adventure isn’t it? I’m in. B+
Jeff: I forgot how much I missed John Cassaday on an X-Men book. Good God, he makes this feel huge.
Andy: A great start to Marvel NOW! with a killer twist. Not Cassaday’s best work but I’m nitpicking. (4/5) #UncannyAvengers #MarvelNOW
Infinite Speech: Really liked this issue but I’m still confused why Scott thinks the death of millions was worth the mutant population coming back.

“Wolverine” #314 (Marvel)
Jeff: Bunn and Pelletier are back!!! Let’s just forget that last arc even happened.

“Wolverine & the X-Men” #18 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! A+
Infinite Speech: What the hell man!!! That last page punched me in the face and kicked me in the feelings!
Jeff: Lord, no, please don’t let that character die!
Andy: Now that’s an ending! Couldn’t be happier with it — we didn’t need another Sammy the Squid-Boy around. (4/5) #Wolverine #XMen

“X-Men” #37 (Marvel)
Jeff: Why is Brian Wood writing Storm and Colossus like they haven’t been friends for a million years? Give me a break!
Andy: Wood’s run has been the best of this series — I appreciate his knowing when to use a code name. Beautiful artwork, too. (4/5) #XMen
