Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 04/18/2012

Amazing Spider-Man #684 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: So much fun it needed to be read three times! Pink Hippo is all I can think about now! lol
Jeff: Slott and Ramos continue to kick this story up a few notches. Spidey using his brains is so cool. A

Avengers #25 (Marvel)
Andy: That was nothing like New Avengers #24. Weak tie-in to say the least. Shaky art, too. And didn’t Storm fly away from the Avengers in AvX #0? C
Infinite Speech: Basically it set up a spin off for AvX but it was still a fun read! Two words: Walt. Simonson. FTW!
Jeff: Oh…poor Walt…you just don’t have the same stuff in you, do ya pal? D
NickZ: This book really had nothing to do with AvX. Skip it, unless you want to see Cap going around crying about his responsibilities.

Avengers vs. X-Men #2 (Marvel)
Arnab: Anyone else find it ludicrous that this is the third time in a year and half that Wolverine has tried to kill a child? Don’t these writers read each other’s work? Or is Logan supposed to come off looking like a psychopathic hypocrite? B+
Infinite Speech: The chirps aren’t long enough for what I want to say about this issue so I’ll wait for the Uncanny X-Piles. All I have to say here is: THWACK!
Jeff: I refuse to believe Jason Aaron wrote this. Books written by committee are just not good. D
NickZ: Two things: 1. They are totally making Cyclops out to be the bad guy. 2. Why is everyone acting like the last time the Phoenix was here was during The Dark Phoenix Saga?
Andy: Wow. This was pretty craptacious. In an event solicited as having great fights, it’d be nice if the art actually portrayed combat that made sense, and showed understanding of a characters’ abilities. Like, why would Cyclops engage Cap in hand to hand combat? Wouldn’t he try and keep him at a distance? Weak. C-

Batman #8 (DC)
Andy: Suddenly all that Night of the Owls stuff from the first 7 issues seems so much cooler! B+
Arnab:
This is Batman at his finest. Bruce and Alfred are amazing and the Court of Owls are clearly confused about life. A+
Dr. Bustos:
This has Bruce Wayne fighting on his home turf using what gadgets he has on hand as he is exhausted. The ending alone is worth the price. A+
Infinite Speech: Nice intro to the event coming up and it’s really cool that we get to see Alfred’s mutant ability to grow a head full of hair in between panels!
NickZ: Holy crap! The “Night of the Owls” is going to be Scott Snyder’s definitive Batman masterpiece.

Batman Odyssey #7 (DC)
Dr. Bustos:
That’s it, the end of a crazy series. Batman scares all his enemies and helps make an old man into a baby. A-

Birds of Prey #8 (DC)
NickZ: I love how Batgirl and Katana are kicking major ass is this book!

Blue Beetle #8 (DC)
Dr. Bustos:
I’m done with this series. I’m just not enjoying what it wants to be. I just remember the fun, old series instead. F

Catwoman #8 (DC)
Arnab: Strong story, decent art, great way to tie into the Night of the Owls. B+
NickZ:
Hot damn! This book is all sex and violence! I likey.

The Defenders #5 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos:
I’ve never been that big of a Namor fan, but this issue had me interested in him. A
NickZ: The interaction between these characters just gets better and better.

Dominique Laveau: Voodoo Child #2 (Vertigo)
Andy: Interesting. Fans of the supernatural should definitely give it a shot. Also, anyone who is attached to New Orleans will dig it. As for everyone else? Still on the fence… B-

Fables #116 (Vertigo)
Andy: I’m sensing something disastrous is going to happen to one of the Cubs… A

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Special Edition (Vertigo)
Infinite Speech: Great cover, and that’s all I have to say about that.

Invincible Iron Man #515 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos:
I’m glad we finally get to see Pepper as Rescue again, I’m sad she didn’t really do anything and it was mostly watching Rhodey get beat up. B-
Infinite Speech: Rhodey really needs to reconsider being friends with Tony Stark. Your billionaire friend should be helping you get into parties and enjoying life. Not getting your chest blown open and almost dying.

Justice League #8 (DC)
Arnab:
While this definitely wasn’t the worst issue in the series, this will be my last issue reading this nonsense. C
Infinite Speech:
I really want to like this title but all this hopping around is sucking the fun out of the book.
NickZ: I liked the way the story focused on Green Arrow and the fact that the Justice League and what they were doing was only secondary. BTW is Jim Lee not going to draw this book anymore?

New Mutants #41 (Marvel)
Jeff: The only good thing I can say about this book is that Anka should be doing interiors. D-
NickZ: A pretty fun story. Two things that continue to bother me in this series are how annoying Warlock is and why the hell doesn’t X-Man wear shoes!

Nightwing #8 (DC)
Andy: Suddenly all that Night of the Owls stuff from the first 7 issues seems so much cooler! B+Andy: A very relevant tie-in issue to the Night of the Owls. A must-read before Batman #8. B+
Arnab: Fantastic issue! Higgins pulls out all the stops with the great flashback story, referencing events from Gates of Gotham and a great present day tie in to the Night of the Owls. A
NickZ:
It looks like all the Bat-books are stepping up their game for the “Night of the Owls” storyline. This book included!

Prophet #24 (Image)
Andy: One of the best sci-fi books out there right now. If you’re a fan of Mobius, give this one a go. Amazing art sucks you right into the world. B+

The Punisher #10 (Marvel)
NickZ: If you like Spider-Man, Daredevil, and/or Punisher then you need to be reading ‘The Omega Effect”!

Ragemoor #2 (Dark Horse)
Andy: If you’re a fan of classic horror, or Eerie or Creepy, pick this one up. Corben and Strnad do a nice job of invoking the traditional with their own flare for the unnatural. B

Red Hood and the Outlaws #8 (DC)
Arnab: Lodbell, Rocafort, and Blond continue to produce one of DC’s best comics. That scene with Tim and Jason? Loved it! A
Infinite Speech:
Rocafort and Lobdell continue to outdo themselves issue after issue! Love the scene w/ Jason and Tim!
NickZ:
An interesting change in the relationship between Jason Todd and Tim Drake/Wayne, can’t wait to see how that plays out.

Red Sonja #65 (Dynamite)
Andy: I know I’m new to the Sonja train, but what the hell was this about? Bummer the art wasn’t as up to par, either. C-

The Shadow #1 (Dyanmite)
Andy: Wow, that got personal really quickly. I’m on board, but still a little lost as to who this character is and why he acts the way he does. (So sue me. I was born in the ’80s.) B-

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi – Force Storm #3 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: Every Star Wars fan on the planet needs to read this series!

Super Dinosaur #10 (Skybound)
NickZ: Kirkman is doing a great job of keeping this book very kid friendly but still having lots of twist and turns in the plot! Also, Jason Howard’s art has never been better!

Supergirl #8 (DC)
NickZ: I don’t understand why Kara doesn’t go to Superman to help her figure things out instead of trusting random strangers.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Micro-Series- Leonardo #4 (IDW)
Andy: Ross Campbell’s art is f***ing SICK! I purchased pages 1 and 19 from him! Sweet Turtle Tits!!! B+
Arnab: Every single TMNT book book comic out these days is brilliant stuff. A-
Infinite Speech: Leo shed a tear then made some Foot ninja shed some blood. I’m also hoping that was Shredder on that roof as well!

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents vol.2 #6 (DC)
Arnab:
This is the best book that no one was reading. This is Nick Spencer at his finest. Everything that has happened since the first issue of the first volume has led up to this point and everything came to a fantastic, exploding  finish.  A+

Thunderbolts #173 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos:
I love that we get the two teams fighting and working together and now we’re going to Latveria! A

Uncanny X-Force #24 (Marvel)
Arnab: I would like this book better if I didn’t hate everyone except for Deadpool and he’s not even written particularly well here. B
Infinite Speech: Alas poor Bobby, Kurt knew you well.
Jeff: Phil Noto…please draw more things! Holy Cow! A-
NickZ: Another amazing issue! This is the X-book all other X-books wish they could be! Nightcrawler is a real killer!
Andy: Thank god Iceman is relevant again in the 616 Universe. Otherwise, this issue would have made me upset. A

The Walking Dead #96 (Image)
Andy: Really like where things are headed. Kirkman is handling this arc very well, taking things in a crazy new direction that’s only logical. A-
Arnab:
I’m loving this book, but I can’t help but think that Rick my regret what he’s doing. a-
Dr. Bustos:
This issue actually has me interested in staying around for at least a few more issues, whereas before I was ready to quit the book. B+
Jeff: I’m tired of Rick’s political speeches. I want more zombies! C
NickZ: Rick has really become the ultimate opportunist, I hope it doesn’t bite them in the ass this time!

Witchblade #155 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Can’t say I enjoyed reading the entire first arc of Seeley’s run but the art team made it look fantastic!

Wolverine and the X-Men #9 (Marvel)
Andy: Ok, this was the first tie-in so I’m ok with a little exposition… but where’s Iceman? B-
Arnab: Why is it that Jason Aaron writes this teaching staff as being completely useless? It seems like issue the kids are going into lockdown, how is that not worse for them? B-
Dr. Bustos:
A lot of build up but I enjoyed the character interactions. B
Infinite Speech: That Beast/Logan sequence towards the end was great! So how come Aaron couldn’t have written AvX #2 just as well as this issue here?
Jeff: See, this is what I’m talking about. This is an example of how good Jason Aaron can be by himself. AvX #2 was not him. B+
NickZ: The kids are what really make this book because I can’t stand Wolverine and his inept staff!

Wonder Woman #8 (DC)
Dr. Bustos:
I love this version of the Underworld, terrifying and fascinating at the same time. The cover makes me think Wonder Woman is yelling “Action!” like Action Man from Venture Bros. A
NickZ: That awkward moment when your magic bracelets fail you at a most inopportune time.

X-Factor #234 (Marvel)
Arnab: Loved the Monet/Layla bit. I also like Havok and Polaris, but I can’t help but feel like they don’t belong here. B+
Jeff:
So is Madrox in charge, or is Havok? B
NickZ: It was good to see Layla being more human for once. I’m not sure I like the way David is writing Havok and Polaris though.

X-Men #27 (Marvel)
Arnab: Jubilee kicked ass for the first time in her life. Let’s all move on. B+
Jeff:
I thoroughly enjoyed this arc, but there’s no way Jubi-freakin’-lee is taking down Lord Deathstrike. B-
NickZ: If you’re a Jubilee fan (What? They exist), then this book is for you. We finally get to see Jubilee fight the way you would expect someone who was trained by Wolverine to be able to fight.

  1. Arnab

By the way folks, don’t listen to Andy, you should definitely read Nightwing #8 after Batman #8.

  2. Billy

    Fraction is great on Defenders!

    1. InfiniteSpeech

He’s great on Mighty Thor as well, Billy. I’m not the biggest Thor fan but I’ve been collecting that series a lot more regularly than expected and it’s because of how great the stories have been!
