Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 2/23/11

Action Comics #898 (DC)
Andy: This series is Paul Cornell at his best. I may hate Superman, but I’m loving Lex Luthor.
NickZ: Holy crap, this might be the best super-villain comic out there!

Amazing Spider-Man #655 (Marvel)
Aron: An acid trip down memory lane.
Jeff: This might be the best single issue of 2011. Silence is golden.

American Vampire #12 (Vertigo)
Andy: Snyder is taking this book in the right direction. Glad to see he has a larger story in mind, and I can’t wait to see how he depicts Sweet throughout history.
Aron: I didn’t care for the art too much. Maybe I’m just too excited for Albuquerque’s return. And Skinner CAN be nice sometimes!

Astonishing X-Men #36 (Marvel)
NickZ: It’s like a Godzilla movie but with the X-Men. That is a WIN!
Jeff: Very unexpected and a great issue! Loved Jason Pearson’s art!

Avengers #10 (Marvel)
Andy: My favorite Avengers book on the shelves. Bendis is nailing this series like a virgin in Amsterdam’s Red Light District.
Dale: So when are we going to be done with Steve’s holier than thou attitude which unfortunately proves to be the only readable segment of the book.

Captain America #615 (Marvel)
Andy: Glad to see Bucky made it out ok…kind of. How about the art on this book? Butch Guice is tearin’ it up!
Aron: Some people just can’t catch a break! Somebody, break him off a piece of that Kit-Kat Bar!

Crossed: Psychopath #1 (Avatar)
Aron: I’m going to restrain myself and keep this G-Rated. This comic is simply…complete and total…garbage.

Darth Vader and the Lost Command #2 (Dark Horse)
Andy: The Force is with this series. Glad to see it’s not turning emo-Anakin on us.

Deadpool #33 (Marvel)
NickZ: Deadpool vs. ID, The Selfish Moon! bahaha!

Deadpool Team-Up #884 (Marvel)
NickZ: Watcher and Deadpool in the men’s room. PRICELESS! Skottie Young’s cover was great too!

Detective Comics #874 (DC)
Andy: Francavilla filled in nicely for Jock in this issue as Scott Snyder continues his great run on this book.
Aron: I think I like “Skeleton Cases” a lot more than “The Black Mirror”. It’s 100% mystery! I still have no clue what’s going on!
NickZ: How creepy is James Gordon Jr.? It is cool when Dick and Tim get to work together.
Arnab: James Jr. is crazy, literally and Dick is still feeling the affects of the poison. The writing in this series is absolutely brilliant.

Dracula: The Company of Monsters #7 (BOOM!)
Aron: I’m done with this book, y’all. Wake me when it gets awesome.

Echoes #3 (Top Cow/Minotaur Press)
Andy: One of the few comics that has successfully creeped me the ‘f’ out.

Fantastic Four #588 (Marvel)
Andy: Fantastic Four #588 is the most beautifully crafted comic book published so far this year. Maybe the best requiem issue ever, too.
Aron: After last issue, the story and art were very disappointing. You think they would have gone all out to end this legendary title.

Gotham City Sirens #20 (DC)
Aron: Okay, I’m gonna eat crow for my bashing of this title, last issue. This was a good read. Harley is brutally twisted. I love it.
NickZ: Great issue! This is side of Harley Quinn that we haven’t really seen before.
Arnab: People might often underestimate Harley, but not anymore. Look out Joker!
Jeff: What did Joker do to piss Harley off like this? I think I prefer her calling him “Puddin’.”

Green Arrow #9 (DC)
Dale: Definitely the best supernatural book currently being published at DC. And while I’m enjoying it that somehow still seems wrong.
Arnab: So now, is this tree going to prove to be as big of an ass as the ring is?

Incredible Hulks #623 (Marvel)
Dale: The Hulk, Ka-Zar, dinosaurs, what’s not to love. Well there is Meik!

Iron Man 2.0 #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Pretty decent, and I like the military theme, but Spencer made some serious fubars with the X-references. It’s Cerebra, not Cerebro, and there’s no way Cyke lets the FBI on Utopia four times a year. Sorry.
Jeff: Some good Nick Spencer mystery tied into a character I really don’t give two flips about. I don’t see this title lasting, but Spencer did a good job.

JLA the 99 #5 (DC)
NickZ: A very fun, action packed JLA adventure. I can’t wait to see how it ends.

Justice League Generation Lost #20 (DC)
NickZ: This issue answers the question ” What makes Maxwell Lord such a jerk?”

Morning Glories #7 (Image/Shadowline)
Aron: I still haven’t got any of this figured out. Something is lurking behind it all, but what?
Jeff: Who IS David? Seriously. I want to know. Now!

Namor The First Mutant (Marvel)
NickZ: Dr. Doom was the only thing that made this issue bearable.

New Mutants #22 (Marvel)
Andy: This was really, really awesome! Love the look of Moonstar!
Jeff: So good to see Chamber back in an X-book, even if it isn’t in regular continuity. Why did they depower that guy?
NickZ: Age of X just keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Arnab: As the war rages, the secrets behind this new world begin to unravel.

The New York Five #2 (Vertigo)
Aron: Oh, look at that! AWWWWW!

Power Man and Iron Fist #2 (Marvel)
Andy: Definitely not for everyone, but I’m liking the art and the Commedia dell’Arte references. What? I’m a theatre nerd too.

Punisher: In The Blood #4 (Marvel)
Andy: Woah, that was bad ass! When Punisher punishes, s**t gets real!

Scalped #46 (Vertigo)
Andy: Jason Aaron keeps on delivering with this series. Each issue reminds me of what a great comic book should be.

Secret Avengers #10 (Marvel)
Andy: Awesome finish. Is Deodato leaving when Brubaker does? I hope not.
Dale: Fantastic finish to this story arc. Moon Knight’s infiltration and Valkyrie’s power proved their worth to this team. Best line: Steele’s “but I’m… bulletproof.”

The Sixth Gun #9 (Oni)
Andy: No other book has pulled off a better blend of the supernatural and the old west.

Skullkickers #6 (Image)
Aron: Want a friendly word of advice? Enough with those chicken$%&# cape and spandex comics! What you really need is a comic like this one!
Jeff: Chris Sims is a hilarious comic website writer. Good to see his talents being used here too.

Spawn Architects of Fear #1 (Image)
Andy: This was way cool. A one-shot story featuring Al Simmons Spawn and a mischievous Dark Angel that can be read by anyone.

Star Trek: Infestation #2 (IDW)
Aron: This is the dud that I thought last issue would be.

Teen Titans #92 (DC)
NickZ: Red Robin fits so much better with this team, but it would’ve been fun to see both Robins on the team for awhile.
Arnab: I’m kinda bummed that Robin’s no longer part of the team.

Terry Moore’s Echo #28 (Abstract)
Dale: As this title gets closer to the finale, Julie and crew’s story continues to get better. And now with everything else going on Tambi Baker enters the story.

The Traveler #4 (BOOM!)
Andy: The snarkiness of the main character is great, and Waid is layering this story well. However, the mcguffin is a little lame.

Uncanny X-Men #533 (Marvel)
Jeff: I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I rather enjoyed this issue. I loved the Adam-X joke.
NickZ: I don’t know what sucks more in this issue, Fraction’s writing or Emma Frost in general.
Dale: So now anyone can have instant powers after one sip of X-perience. Ok! Altogether now can everyone say “JUMP THE SHARK”

Usagi Yojimbo #135 (Dark Horse)
Aron: The mysterious Lord of Owls returns, handling his business like a wraith. Good for all ages.

X-Men #8 (Marvel)
NickZ: A pretty good issue, don’t know why Spider-Man is in it but he brings a few good laughs.
Jeff: Chris Bachalo could draw an encyclopedia of reptiles and I would buy it because the dude draws the best Lizard I’ve ever seen!

X-Men Legacy #245 (Marvel)
Andy: See “New Mutants” above. Such a cool concept that’s being well executed.
Jeff: First part of Age of X and I must say, it was much better than that crappy one-shot a few weeks ago.
NickZ: Who cares if Age of X is similar to the many other X-Men apocalyptic futures, it’s still awesome! Some of these relationships alone are just crazy!
Arnab: If you wanted to see an army of mutants kick ass, this is your book.

X-Men: To Serve and Protect #4 (Marvel)
Andy: Not too bad, but when it’s all said and done, I want an “X-Dudes” mini!
NickZ: Psylocke slept with Hercules!?! and Rockslide “thought Jean Grey was totally hot.” What more do you need to know?
Jeff: That’s it. I’m done with you, Kathryn Immonen. That Gambit/Hellcat story made NO sense.

X-23 #6 (Marvel)
NickZ: Gotta love a good Mister/Miss/young girl? Sinister story.

  1. Aron

@Andy- Francavilla didn’t fill in for Jock on Detective. “Skeleton Cases” is the Francavilla story that ran as a backup feature in 871 & 872. It took center stage in this issue.
