Action Comics #1000

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s

An 80-page love letter extravaganza to The Man of Steel, The Last Son of Krypton, better known as Superman.

Action Comics #1000 is celebrating 80 years of Supes, that’s how long Superman has been in our pop culture and comics. 80 years is a long time for anything, but Superman shows no signs of slowing down in this landmark issue.

DC Comics has been hyping up this milestone of an issue with various stories throughout for a while now. They have been releasing teasers, sneak peeks, and showing off the variant covers. This issue has numerous variant covers that each show a different decade of Superman. Which means you’ll see those good ol’ red skin-tight trunks again. I personally love all the variant covers. I decided to choose the traditional cover because it’s been so long since I’ve seen Superman in that iconic pose of his fist on his hips.

No matter what cover you pick up, this is the first comic book I’ve read in a long time that is great from front to back. The artwork is on a very high-level here and the writing is a reminder of why so many of us love this character.

This issue has amazing writing contributions from current Action Comics and Superman writers Dan Jurgens, Peter Tomasi, and Patrick Gleason. We also get comic book legends Marv Wolfman, Louise Simonson, and Curt Swan. What I’ve been looking forward to is that Action Comics #1000 is the very first DC story from Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis.

Brian Michael Bendis has been a huge part of this hype at DC Comics. Bendis who is known for ‘Marvel’s Secret Invasion’ and the 2013 Marvel series ‘Age of Ultron’ combines forces with artist Jim Lee for The Truth. All I can say is it’s about time and great that Bendis finally got to step his foot into the DC Comics territory. This was easily one of my favorite stories and I can’t wait to see what Bendis brings to the table. Bendis in traduces a new villain and it teases the return of Bendis along with this new villain.

This issue would be a great introduction to those who may not know the character all that well. This issue really captures the charm, heroism, of Superman both past and present all in one issue.

Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund highlight Superman’s selflessness in the story ‘For the City That Has Everything’. Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason’s do a story called ‘Never-Ending Battle’ and it shows how Superman doesn’t give up, no matter is put up against him.

I’m not surprised that Dan Jurgens did an outstanding job because he has been doing Action comics for at least a couple of years now and he really knows the character. I also like how this issue shines a light on Lois Lane in some of the stories because it’s just as much of her celebration as it is Superman’s.

I’m not going to spoil the story, but Lex Luthor and Superman have an interesting encounter during a game of chess. I wish we could have gotten more time with other villains.

Action Comics #1000 has something great for every fan and every reader will have his or her own favorite story. Even if you’re not a fan of the Man of Tomorrow, you can’t help but realize that Superman paved the way for superheroes in pop culture and this issue is a piece of comic book history. Cheers to another 80 years.
