Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 7/13/2011

Amazing Spider-Man #665 (Marvel)
Andy: In conclusion: NY > Boston
Infinite Speech: Hurting one of Peter’s friends is NEVER a good idea. Great one and done from Slott! The backup story was also a nice read!
Jeff: Ryan Stegman can draw my Spidey any time he damn well pleases. Fantastic one-shot issue!

American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #2 (Vertigo)
Andy: Best. Opening. Sequence. Ever.
Arnab: Gorgeous art, it’s just beautiful. Story? Do you even have to ask. It’s riveting, suspenseful, totally awesome.
Infinite Speech: Snyder kills it this issue and I’m enjoying it more than some of the regular AV issues!
Jeff: You know the worst kind of vampires? Nazi vampires. Snyder and Murphy are just superior storytellers.

Batgirl #23 (DC)
Andy: I will miss this series when the DCnU kicks off. How awesome would a Teen Titans book starring Steph, Supergirl, Miss Martian, Bombshell, and Stargirl be?
NickZ: Fun story, surprise ending, and many references to Star Wars….What more could you ask for?

Batman The Dark Knight #3 (DC)
Andy: Good things come to those who wait…a really, really long time.
Arnab: Fantastic art. Splotchy story. I mean, Bruce not caring that the Batmobile has been stolen? That’s sketch.
NickZ: This book is a pretty rad and I love the art!

Birds of Prey #14 (DC)
Andy: Not a bad issue. Unfortunately it won’t mean jack crap in a few months. Ah, well. This series never lived up to the hype anyway.
Arnab: Mixed feelings about this one. Inconsistent art that makes all the women appear the same and a decent, but still flawed, story.
NickZ: They did a great job with this issue, I loved how the story went back and forth between the past and present.

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #521 (Marvel)
Andy: America! Fuck ye- wait a second…yikes.
Infinite Speech: So is everyone through trippin’ over the American Panther’s identity now? Good. Now enjoy the great story from Liss.

Captain America #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Great art, par story. I…kind of miss Bucky.
Infinite Speech: I didn’t want to like it but Brubaker and McNiven had other plans.

Charismagic #2 (Aspen)
Andy: Another promising series to add to Aspen’s surging library. If your girl likes Harry Potter, get her Charismagic. She’ll love it.

Daken Dark Wolverine #11 (Marvel)
NickZ: Donna Kiel is a great adversary for Daken, even though they’ll probably end up bumping uglies.

Deadpool #40 (Marvel)
NickZ: Why is She-Hulk representing Deadpool in court? and what is the deal with Dr. Whitby? Is she sprung on ‘pool?

Detective Comics #879 (DC)
Andy: This is still the best Batman book on the shelves, but how many times can Joker escape freaking Arkham!? I mean come on!!
Arnab: Brilliant in every conceivable way. The words are the hilt to the art’s blade that create the sword that pierces your sense of security.
NickZ: The creepiest Batman book I’ve ever read! For realz!

Executive Assistant Orchid #1 (Aspen)
Andy: Between the Executive Assistant books and Lady Mechanika, Aspen is poised to make a serious dent in the indie comics scene.

FF #6 (Marvel)
Andy: Why didn’t my 4 year old cousin tell me he was doing the art on FF this week?

Fear Itself: Spider-Man #3 (Marvel)
Andy: A journalist, laboriously reading this issue. The clock chimes. He couldn’t finish it, and had to put it down.

Flashpoint: Citizen Cold #2 (DC)
Andy: Couldn’t finish it. I just stopped caring.

Flashpoint: Emperor Aquaman #1 (DC)
Andy: Really nice, clean art, but the story was too exposition heavy. In a 3 issue mini, that shouldn’t be the case in #2.

Ghost Rider #1 (Marvel)
Andy: A little more background on this woman would be nice, but not a bad start.

Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors #3 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Books like this reinforce my love for creator owned titles!

Green Lantern #67 (DC)
Arnab: Well this is a strange turn of events.

Green Lantern Corps #61 (DC)
Arnab: Meh. It’s a John Stewart book. If you like him, you’ll probably like it. If you don’t, well you’ll be wondering where Kyle went.
Infinite Speech: Started off with a story with John Stewart but halfway through I wanted Subway then Batman and Soloman Grundy showed up. What happened again?

Iron Age #2 (Marvel)
Andy: I totally thought this series would blow, but I was wrong. Seriously, I’m ok with being wrong.

Journey Into Mystery #625 (Marvel)
Andy: Loki is quickly becoming one of my favorite Marvel characters. Gillen is doing great work on this book.

Lady Mechanika #2 (Aspen)
Andy: Wow, since when did this issue take place in Exposition Park? Too many word balloons covering up that hot artwork!

New Avengers #14 (Marvel)
Andy: Everyone missed Rogue’s old power set, so now they gave it to Mockingbird. Now run with it Marvel.
Infinite Speech: Spidey wants to quit and Mockingbird wants to put her fist through Sin’s face. Literally.

New Mutants #27 (Marvel)
Andy: X-Man is back. Wonder what kinda crazy is in store with that storyline.
Jeff: That was some of the worst art I’ve ever seen in a comic book. Even though Dani kicked Sugar Man’s ass, it still could have been drawn better.
NickZ: Of course they had to de-power Nate Grey. Also Moonstar kicks major ass!

Punisher MAX #15 (Marvel)
Andy: The best Punisher stories I have ever read are written by Jason Aaron.

Red Robin #25 (DC)
Arnab: Such a great book. “Isn’t this pretty much how we ended up with Damina?” Hilarious!
Eli: How many evil super villains will end up wanting Tim to carry on their legacy?
NickZ: I Love this book! Love the story! Love the art! Love the twist ending. It’s just great!

The Red Wing #1 (Image)
Andy: Hell yes. Give me more Jonathan Hickman original sci-fi stories. NOW DAMNIT!
Infinite Speech: Took a chance on this title and Hickman has me interested in his time traveling tale.

Samurai’s Blood #2 (Image)
Andy: The only thing bleeding after this one are my eyes because of all the typos.
Kristin: Plot was a bit too contrived, but still a good, if slightly irritating, read.

Spawn #209 (Image)
Andy: This book is the best it has ever been. If you stopped reading Spawn at any point in the last 20 years, jump back on now.
Infinite Speech: The series just keeps getting better.

Superman #713 (DC)
NickZ: This was lame and obvious and just stupid….so…a typical Superman story then.

Teen Titans #97 (DC)
Arnab: Well, that’s finally done with. Solstice is now a member of the Teen Titans, I wonder if she’ll make it through the reboot.

Ultimate Comics Avengers vs. New Ultimates #6 (Marvel)
Andy: What in the name of Uncle Ben’s balls did this series have to do with the Death of Spider-Man?

Ultimate Comics Fallout #1 (Marvel)
Andy: The first time I had sex lasted longer than the “time” it took to read this issue. Still, it was good. But where the f*&# was Iceman’s grieving scene?

Ultimate Comics X #5 (Marvel)
Andy: Jeph Loeb really impressed me with this series. Despite its delays, the story was solid, the dialogue fit, and Adams’ artwork made everything money.

Witchblade #146 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: So the Angelus and Witchblade were lovers once? Isn’t that a bit incestuous Marz?

Wolverine #12 (Marvel)
Andy: Hey, remember that terrible series Wolverine: The Best There Is? Yeah, this story line is showing how that book should have been done.
Jeff: Ok, shouldn’t the guy with the wife in labor be angry with the Hulk rather than Wolverine? This issue took a weird turn.
NickZ: A very dark story, almost doesn’t feel like a Wolverine story but I still like it.

X-Men: Schism #1 (Marvel)
Andy: This was a slap in the face to Cyclops’ development over the last few years. The artist drew him in more effeminate positions than Richard Simmons in the late 80s.
Arnab: Holy Hellfire Club! And Sentinels! Excellent stuff here.
Eli: There’s a special someone out there for everybody, apparently even Doombots.
Infinite Speech: So…ummm…I really hope it gets better in the coming issues.
Jeff: Pacheco decided to put a few extra pounds on Wolverine. Not a perfect issue, but I’m interested in seeing what’s next.
NickZ: Kade is one bad ass kid. Meanwhile, Cyclops was being a bit of a tool and Wolverine needs to leave the little minor girls alone, enough is enough!

Why am I the only one reading Gladstone’s??? I’m also still laughing at Andy’s FF chirp! Was the art that bad? 🙂
