Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 5/18/2011

Amazing Spider-Man #661 (Marvel)
Andy: Spider-Man gets no respect, and it’s hilarious.
Jeff: Spidey gets “schooled” by the Avengers Academy kids. Really funny seeing them figure out most of Peter’s most basic super-hero problems.

Astonishing X-Men #38 (Marvel)
Jeff: Is there a rule that says when Beast is with SWORD, he has to be drawn terribly? I liked this issue, but could not get past Beast’s awful face.
NickZ: It’s nice to have Beast back, plus, an X-Men story without Cyclops, Emma AND Wolverine!!! Unthinkable!

Avengers #13 (Marvel)
Andy: That may be the best work I’ve seen by Bachalo in years. I followed every panel, and every panel had something going on.

Batman #710 (DC)
Arnab: Two-Face attempts to overthrow Mario Falcone, unbeknownst to him Gilda’s back and she’s not so happy with him.
Infinite Speech: Still diggin’ Daniel’s run on this title and it really sucks to be Two-Face in this issue.
NickZ: So is Two-Face like Dick Grayson’s Joker?

Batman & Robin #23 (DC)
Arnab: Jason Todd is broken out of prison, but who helps him may surprise you.
Infinite Speech: The issue was going great until the “Thundercats” showed up to rescue Jason Todd.
NickZ: The return of Jason Todd, the cocky bastard, you love to hate.

Batman: Gates of Gotham #1 (DC)
Andy: If things keep going like this issue, it will be a tough case to not give Scott Snyder a regular position on a Bat book. The man is money when it comes to Gotham.
Arnab: Gotham’s long and twisted history unravel as Dick and company race to save the city.
Aron: Snyder & Higgins have me intrigued with the mysterious history. McCarthy has me feeling like I’m watching a Don Bluth film.
NickZ: Snyder does it again! This story looks like it’s going to be a Batman classic!

Booster Gold #44 (DC)
Andy: Usually I don’t care about Booster, but this Flashpoint tie-in has my attention.
Aron: Awesome. Jurgens makes jumping on with this issue easier than jumping on a bed.

Deadpool MAX #8 (Marvel)
Andy: This is how I want my Deadpool stories to be- off the wall crazy, f*#@in’ weird, and 100% adults only.
NickZ: It was actually fun learning a little bit more about Bob.

Doctor Who: A Fairytale Life #2 (IDW)
Aron: Pond gets captured in her nightgown. The Doctor devises a plan. And Pond was in her nightgown.

Drums #1 (Image)
Andy: If you’re into weird voodoo stuff, don’t look this one over.

Fables #105 (Vertigo)
Andy: Fables is back to top form, as Willingham is providing plenty of character development and memorable moments. This is turning out to be one of my favorite arcs in the series.

Fear Itself: Invincible Iron Man #504 (Marvel)
Andy: Unlike last issue, this one actually tied into the event, and man was it nasty! How many civvies died in this one? Holy crapola!!

Generation Hope #7 (Marvel)
Arnab: While this rag tag group of kids are finally acting like a team, they’re still quite bland.
Jeff: So did that baby teleport out of its mother’s womb? My wife would be pissed if she read that.
NickZ: When did hope become Rafiki? You know…from the Lion King?….get it?…because she holds up the…..oh, never mind.

Hawkeye: Blindspot #4 (Marvel)
Andy: I was never into Hawkeye, and this series didn’t do much to win me over. What did the Barton-faithful think of it?

Herc #3 (Marvel)
Andy: Glad to see Herc is getting his lighter side back, after it went missing during the Chaos War. Not an essential read by any means, but a fun one.

Heroes For Hire #7 (Marvel)
Aron: Tim Seeley’s art ruined the joy I found in last issue. I think I’m jumping back off this train.
Infinite Speech: Just as fun and great looking as the last issue! Heroes For Hire is NOT to be slept on!

Justice League of America #57 (DC)
NickZ: Wow, things just got moon splitting, Spectre destroying, CRAZY!

Last Mortal #1 (Top Cow/Minotaur Press/Image)
Andy: Great read! The story and dialogue were solid, but it was the fluid art that did it for me. There’s so much motion in Nachlik’s pencils, it’s very real.
Arnab: Excellent start. The art is gorgeous and the writing is great.

The Li’l Depressed Boy #4 (Image)
Andy: It’s about time the Li’l Depressed Boy got really depressed. Music lovers have to read this series.

Namor First Mutant Annual #1 (Marvel)
Arnab: Pretty much the most awful art I’ve seen all year. The story ended decently enough though.
NickZ: I’m sorry but Namor is not that powerful? WTH? Dumb, just dumb.

Outsiders #39 (DC)
NickZ: We got Outsider vs. Outsider, Batman vs. Waller, What more could you want? Best DC team book, hands down!

Power Girl #24 (DC)
Andy: Winick excels here in creating a misunderstood character who gets pushed too far. I want to see more of this guy.
Aron: This issue was kind of slow going.

Rocketeer Adventures #1 (IDW)
Andy: Saw the movie so long ago I don’t remember it, and never read any of the comics until now. This is great stuff. I have some back issues to seek out!

Science Dog Special #2 (Skybound)
NickZ: Science Dog is just AWESOME! Such a great bittersweet tale and props to Cory Walker, who’s art just killed me on the last page. So heartbreaking.

Sigil #3 (CrossGen)
Andy: Just read all 3 issues back to back. Wasn’t expecting much and now I’m a fine. Great work Mike Carey!

Skaar: King of the Savage Land #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Skaar HEADBUTTS an alosaurus and drops it! This mini series is just pure fun to get into so get into it!

Snake Eyes #1 (IDW)
Andy: Great art, but I hate the silly quips. Lets keep this Joe reboot a little more real, eh?
Infinite Speech: There are ninja and then there is Snake Eyes. Great writing and a fantastic art team with this one so bring on more Cobra Civil War!

The Spirit #14 (DC)
Aron: An awesome tribute to the legendary artists of comic book past. I liked this one. Light and fun!

Star Wars: Jedi: The Dark Side #1 (Dark Horse)
Andy: I like it, but I can’t help but feel I already know how it’s going to end…

Supergirl #64 (DC)
Andy: I hope James Peatty comes back soon to write this book again. It had a strong Teen Titans vibe, and it worked.
NickZ: This had the right characters and a good story but it just didn’t deliver.

Superman/Batman #84 (DC)
NickZ: I’m not usually a fan of Batman and Superman stories involving magic, but this one was great. This series is just loads of good old fashion comic book fun.

Teen Titans #95 (DC)
Andy: These new villains are creepy. I want to see them get their demonic butts kicked.
Arnab: I love how while this god is torturing everyone, Red Robin doesn’t appear to be in any pain at all. What a bunch of babies.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #7 (DC)
Andy: I read this in less minutes than the issue number, but it’s still my favorite book by Nick Spencer.
Arnab: Who says enemies can be lovers?

Thunderbolts #157 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Would have preferred Kev’s art for the entire issue but this is still one of the consistently best books Marvel has been putting out.

Ultimate Comics Avengers vs. New Ultimates #4 (Marvel)
Andy: No way. No way that guy is dead…but if he is, this is why I love the Ultimate Universe.

Uncanny X-Force #10 (Marvel)
Andy: Remender is proving he can do no wrong with this series. Talk about developing a character, and going back to his roots. Cannot wait for what happens next!
Arnab: Did the team really not think Archangel being being released from his cage would be a bad thing?
Infinite Speech: So maybe killing Apocalypse in the first arc wasn’t a good idea X-Force because now Archangel may kill you all.
Jeff: I’m just loving the progression of this story. Remender is writing the strongest X-book, if not Marvel book, right now.
NickZ: You think this series can’t get any better, but then they deliver the Dark Beast and a return to the Age of Apocalypse! F%*# YEAH!

Witchblade #144 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: This 15th anniversary issue is origin perfection from Marz and Sejic!

X-23 #10 (Marvel)
Arnab: This actually brings up a really interesting question. Would X-23, Logan, etc. die if all their blood is drained?
NickZ: Wow, this book took a really dark turn this week and for a book about a mutant killing machine, that’s saying something!

X-Factor #219 (Marvel)
Andy: So when is Emanuela Lupacchino going to draw an X-Factor issue of ALL ladies? She makes’em hot! …and did P.D. really walk around WonderCon in a Green Hornet costume?
Arnab: Monet St. Croix is so damn badass. In other news, what is going on with Layla and Guido?
Jeff: Am I the only one who can’t wait to see Guido turn evil since Layla resurrected him?
NickZ: Monet and Rahne go all feral over Strong Guy’s “death”! Don’t cross these “ladies’! (and I use the term lightly).

X-Men Giant-Size #1 (Marvel)
Arnab: The Evolutionaries have arrived on Utopia and for once, it doesn’t appear as if the X-Men are in danger.
Jeff: The only thing that would have made this better is if Paco Medina had drawn the whole book. Dangit, he’s awesome!
NickZ: Chris Yost pens what looks to be an epic X-Men adventure! It’s great to see the original five in a story that impacts today.

X-Men: Prelude to Schism #2 (Marvel)
Andy: Basically a re-telling of The Magneto Testament. It was cool to see how much Magneto respects Cyclops.
Arnab: This prelude business is really good stuff. Schism better not disappoint.
Jeff: Not as strong as the first issue, but I do like Magneto saying that if they make it through this, he’s going to start going by the name Max again.
NickZ: Another amazing issue! At this rate, Schism needs to fantastic in order to live up to this great Prelude mini-series.
