Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 3/30/11

Action Comics #899 (DC)
Andy: Lex Luthor kicks alien ass! One of the most underrated DC books on the shelves.
NickZ: Who’s smarter Lex or Brainiac? Read this issue and find out.

Age of X Universe #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Man, this is a twisted, sick world…
Jeff: Tie-ins like this that don’t have anything to do with the main story make me frustrated.
Infinite Speech: These Avengers are jerks and that’s just fine with me! Nice tie in for this alternate reality tale.
Arnab: We finally get some sense of what is going on outside of the Fortress.

The Amazing Spider-Man #657 (Marvel)
Andy: The Fantastic Four tribute issue to Johnny was solemn and touching- this one was lively, but just as moving. A+ job to all involved.
Jeff: The double-page spread of Peter and Johnny pranking each other was laugh-out-loud funny. But why is Peter sunbathing with his mask on when the FF know him?
Aron: An entertaining little sidestep, but I’m ready for the roller coaster ride of awesome to begin again.

American Vampire #13 (Vertigo)
Andy: A perfect jumping on point for new readers- and you should totally do so! Scott Snyder has re-invented the vampire genre with this book, and it’s f&#*ing AWESOME!
Aron: American Vampire is like a puzzle. Each issue puts a new piece on the table and interlocks with what’s already been put down. JUMP ON NOW!
Arnab: As the vampire movement enters WWII, Skinner Sweet once again enters Pearl and Henry’s life.

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #516 (Marvel)
Andy: The best issue of this run so far, and a good jumping on point. I like Francavilla, but I think I may like Jefte Palo better on this book.
Infinite Speech: Kinda hard to plead your case while standing over the dead wife of your enemy. But it’s not all bad, Spidey shows up to help!

Caligula #1 (Avatar)
Andy: David Lapham is great at writing books like this- plenty of violence, but it’s focused and driven, with minimal exposition and dialogue. Plus, the painted art is a bonus. A very well done #1.
Aron: The graphic content in this is arguably acceptable, considering the subject. Suprisingly, some of it is only talked about. A good ending.

Cyclops #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Dumb, just dumb.

Deadpool Team-Up #883 (Marvel)
NickZ: Deapool calling up the major Marvel villains, asking if they were “happy with their current assassination provider” was hilarious.

Detective Comics #875 (DC)
Andy: DC really fubar’ed on this one. Double paged printings all over the place. I’m sure it was a solid story though. Wish I could have read it. WTF.
Aron: WOW! Amazing! This is THE best issue of this series that I have ever read. EVER! The storytellers are just amazing!
NickZ: Wow this book was great. If you only read one DC book this week, this must be it!
Arnab: Commissioner Gordon takes the spotlight in this issue and Snyder shows us how terrifying Gotham can truly be.

Doctor Who #3 (IDW)
Aron: The magic of the television series is sadly lost in this issue. What happened?!

Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters #1 (IDW)
Andy: You either love Godzilla or you don’t- this book won’t change your opinion. It was fun, and the art was solid- far better than the Jurassic Park books.
Aron: This was pretty awesome. Really liked the Hester art. Who doesn’t?

Gotham City Sirens #21 (DC)
Andy: Oh man! This series has been pretty rocky, but this issue takes the gold.
Aron: Girls are stupid.
NickZ: Looks like the Sirens are breaking up! Also the ending was a let down, but I expected as much.
Arnab: As Harley uses her analytical mind to reach Joker, the other two Sirens have a disagreement of their own.

Green Arrow #10 (DC)
Andy: Galahad’s back story is one I can get behind. I hope the character sticks around for awhile.
Arnab: Things are getting exciting as the truth behind Galahad comes to light.

Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #8 (DC)
Andy: Sign me up for team Guy. …yes, I realize how strange that must sound if you’re unfamiliar with Green Lantern. So be it.
Infinite Speech: Who sounded like two old ladies bitching at each other for 90% of this issue? Hal & Guy. That’s who.
Arnab: The forewarned battle between Guy and Hal takes place and now they’re stuck on a frozen planet.

Incognito: Bad Influences #5 (Icon)
Andy: Didn’t see that ending coming, at all. This series is superhero pulp at its finest, and really shows off the talents of Brubaker and Phillips.

Jack of Fables #50 (Vertigo)
Andy: Woah. Like, everyone died. Crazy. What the hell happens now?

JLA the 99 #6 (DC)
NickZ: Things kinda got resolved too easily, but all in all it was a good series.

Kick-Ass 2 #2 (Icon)
Andy: I thought I was over Kick-Ass, but then I read this issue. Don’t make me wait 6 more months for part 3 damnit!!
Infinite Speech: Dogs are truly a man’s best friend. Just make sure you’re friends with the guy who owns the big dog.
Aron: Last issue was kinda lame, but this one is…KICK-ASS!

Proof: Endangered #4 (Image)
Andy: An awesome issue, but I’m pissed off my favorite character since #1 of vol. 1 had to bite the big one. Was it me, or did Proof not even seem to care?

Punisher in the Blood #5 (Marvel)
Andy: Well that’s over. I think I’ll just stick with Punisher MAX for my Castle fix.

Scalped #47 (Vertigo)
Andy: My favorite character, Dino Poorbear, is going to be essential to the plot down the line, isn’t he? I can see it now- killing Dash because he’s obsessed with Gina.

Scarlet #5 (Icon)
Andy: I would join Scarlet’s resistance in a heartbeat.
Infinite Speech: One of the best creator owned books out there to date! Bendis and Maleev are bringing something different to the table folks, so take a seat.
Aron: Probably the slowest issue of this outstanding series. I wish it came out more often.

Secret Avengers #11 (Marvel)
Andy: Will Conrad did an amazing job mimicking Mike Deodato’s style in this one. All around, a solid issue, and I can’t wait to see how John Steele will stand up to this team!
Jeff: I knew there was a reason why I dropped this book after the first arc. Yawnsville.

Spider-Girl #5 (Marvel)
Andy: This series needs to commit one way or another: is it a campy kids book, or a serious Spider book? Right now it’s somewhere in-between and it’s not working.

Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Lost Command #3 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Vader being brutal and kicking ass never gets old. Could do without the Padme scenes though.
Infnite Speech: Did Vader take a bomb to the face and KEEP GOING?! Why yes, yes he #@%& did!

Star Wars: Legacy: War #4 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech:
Someone at Lucasfilm needs to tap this era for the next movie trilogy!

The Suicide Forest #4 (IDW)
Aron: Aww, damn. A peaceful, yet tragic, wrap up to a pretty good series. Buy the trade, people!

Teen Titans #93 (DC)
Andy: I like the new character. Nicola Scott brings so much to the table with this series. It doesn’t feel the same without her.
Arnab: The Teen Titans fly out to help a friend, but in the end it is one of their own who needs the help.

Terry Moore’s Echo #29 (Abstract Studios)
Andy: This has consistently been one of the best indie reads in comics. It’s almost over now, and I’ll be sad to see it go.

Thor #621 (Marvel)
Andy: This whole arc has been…disappointingly underwhelming. Then again, I’ve never been a huge Thor guy.

The Traveler #5 (BOOM!)
Andy: Now that the story has left Earth, I think it will do wonders for this book. A good jumping on point.

Undying Love #1 (Image)
Andy: Holy… I usually couldn’t care less about vampire books (except American Vampire), but this one has hooked me. It’s gritty and real, with great art.

The Walking Dead #83 (Image)
Andy: HOLY &%$#!! ARE YOU $@*&ING KIDDING ME!?!?!?
Jeff: I forgot to order this! D’oh! It was what I was looking forward to the most! How did I do that?
NickZ: It’s like issue 48 all over again! Kirkman tweeted that this is “the first issue …to end on a happy note”, sick, just sick.
Arnab: I think the word I’m looking for is, speechless. There are no words.

Wolverine #7 (Marvel)
Andy: Maybe the best issue of this series so far, which is sayin’ something. It’s easy to appreciate a writer who understands the powers of his cast.
Jeff: Did not see that ending coming, nor the person who showed up!
NickZ: Thought this was an OK issue until I got to the last page and it became an awesome one! I can’t wait for the next issue.

X-23 #8 (Marvel)
NickZ: X vs Daken! Nuff said!

You know a fun Chirps game? Cover the names and try to figure out who said each chirp. I am so good at this, I get them right like 9 out of 10 times.

  2. Arnab

@Nick, haha. I don’t think I could guess anyone other than my own. And not because I write them, but because how consistently dull each of them sound.

  3. Billy

Godzilla rocked! Secret Avengers was good, but not great.

  4. InfiniteSpeech

I thought I read somewhere that Spider-Girl was getting the axe around issue 8. Is it that bad?
