Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 3/23/11

5 Ronin #4 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
I think I should have waited for the trade and just read them all at once.

Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine #5 (Marvel)
Andy: Jason Aaron is a little out of his comfort zone with this series, and I like how he’s been handling it. I’m digging this mini, but I don’t blame those who aren’t.
Jeff: This story was much cooler when Mojo wasn’t in it. Kubert’s art was struggling in this issue too.

Batman Incorporated #4 (DC)
Andy:
Woah, are you seeing this art by Chris Burnham!? This dude can imitate anyone! Amazing!
Arnab:
Grant Morrison continues to weave Batman’s history into his present, this time with some great art by Chris Burnham.

Batman: Streets of Gotham #21 (DC)
Andy: Thomas Elliot’s reign as Bruce Wayne comes to an end, and his face gets the worst part of the deal. Poor guy.
Arnab: It’s the final issue in the series and I for one am completely bummed. Fantastic end to the arc though.

Batman The Dark Knight #2 (DC)
Andy: The art is amazing, but I’m having trouble buying Batman getting this upset over some random woman we’ve never heard of before.
Arnab: While the long between issues left me struggling to remember what was going on, the art was wonderful.
Aron: The only thing wrong with this issue is that it took FOREVER to come out!

Captain America #615.1 (Marvel)
Andy: Not a fan of this idea. The status quo was just changed, and it works. Why backtrack so soon?

Daredevil: Reborn #3 (Marvel)
Andy: Um, ok?? How the hell do you take that one back?
Aron: I know he ain’t dead. I read the Waid interview. C’mon, Waid, Rivera, & Martin! July can’t get here fast enough!

Echoes #4 (Top Cow/Minotaur Press)
Andy: I’m calling it- this will be optioned for a movie at some point. It’s fu*#ing scary good.

Fables #103 (Vertigo)
Andy: This Super Team storyline has been one of the best since the Crossover. I still don’t think any of them stand a chance against Mr. Dark, though….except Bigby.

FF #1 (Marvel)
Andy: In Hickman I trust. Bring on the awesome!
Aron: Equal parts unnecessary and intriguing. But, will it be enough intriguing to get me to try #2?
Infinite Speech: Nice intimate issue here but I’m ready to see how Doom fits into all of this!

Green Hornet #14 (Dynamite)
Andy: Phil Hester has done a nice job taking over for Kevin Smith. However, it’s the artwork by Jonathan Lau and colors by Ivan Nunes that make this book sing.

Green Lantern #64 (DC)
Andy: I was skeptical about the War of the Green Lanterns, and while I still think the Guardians going after Hal is a bit extreme, this issue shows the concept has potential.
Arnab: Krona is definitely the best part of this chapter.
Aron: Lost interest halfway through the issue. I’m taking an incomplete. Hold me after class. I double dog dare you.
Infinite Speech: Looks like the next big GL event is going to be a good one. Let’s just hope there aren’t too many tie ins to screw it all up.

Green Lantern Corps #58 (DC)
Andy: See the GL chirp above…but how are Stewart and Rayner supposed to get help without their rings? Should be interesting to see them get crafty.
Arnab: Every once in a while the second chapter is better than the first, this is one of those times.

Haunt #14 (Image)
Andy: So far so good. Greg Capullo is owning this book with the art.

Hellblazer #277 (Vertigo)
Aron: In search of a new thumb, this issue was a new helping of awesome. JUMP ON NOW!

Hellraiser #1 (BOOM!)
Aron: FUH! KING! AWESOME! The idea and set up is BRILLIANT! They have such sights to show us! Let’s hope they take their time!

Hulk #31 (Marvel)
Andy: Hmm…still a solid series, but the fact that Red Hulk just needs to tell one person who he is to end the madness, but won’t due to his ego, is kind of silly.

Justice League of America #55 (DC)
Andy: The Reign of Doomsday story continues, and so far, it’s been surprisingly good. However, how did he not pound Dick to a pulp?
Aron: DAMN, this is more wordy than if I had eaten Alphabits and Alphabet Soup and then took a dump!

Justice League Generation Lost #22 (DC)
Andy: Joe Bennet draws Batman in some badass poses in this one. Wow!

Lorna: Relic Wrangler (Image)
Andy: The first story was fun, but I’m not sure if I’d read it as a series.

Marineman #4 (Image)
Andy: Props to Ian Churchill for creating one of the most likable protagonists in comics today. I love this series, and if you are awed by the wonders of the ocean, read it!

New Mutants #23 (Marvel)
Andy: …is that a Ghost Box!?!? So far every issue of Age of X has been a home run, and now its really got me thinking.
Jeff: Age of X is just killing it, man. I’m thinking Legion has done it again.
Arnab: As this awesome event continues, the reader is time and time again left question what they believed to be true.

Osborn #4 (Marvel)
Andy: The story is decent, but can get a little preachy…and Osborn comes off a little too theatrical.

Power Man and Iron Fist #3 (Marvel)
Andy: Yeah, this just got lame.

Silver Surfer #2 (Marvel)
Andy: Silver Surfer fans will dig it. Unfortunately, I’ve never been one of them.
Aron: The series started out in spectacular fashion. This issue kinda mellowed out so it can lay the story down in front of us.
Infinite Speech: Pak has been on fire lately, and he continues to blaze in the pages of Silver Surfer!

The Sixth Gun #10 (Oni)
Andy: The Sixth Gun is on pace to be Oni’s best book ever published. Yep, even better than Scott Pilgrim.

Spawn #205 (Image)
Andy: Spawn is blowing me away right now. From issue #201 on, this series has been phenomenal- from the art to the story. This is a great time to be a fan.

Supergirl #62 (DC)
Andy: This story line has revived this book. A solid team-up with Supergirl, Damian, and Blue Beetle.
Aron: Supergirl has never looked so ugly! And she lost a lot of hair in between JLA and here. I see these things.

Superman/Batman #82 (DC)
Aron: Last issue, weird. This issue, enjoyable. Get in on this Cullen Bunn run, folks!

Thor #620.1 (Marvel)
Andy: Um, hey- Siege ended, like, a year ago.

Ultimate Comics Doom #4 (Marvel)
Andy: That was a great ending. Especially the final few pages. The Ultimate Universe can get away with stuff like this, totally opening the door for something new with these characters.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #156 (Marvel)
Andy: The Death of Spider-Man story officially kicks off. I gotta say- Ultimate Green Goblin is far more badass looking than 616 Green Goblin.
Aron: So glad Bagley is back on the title! Not liking the “he needs training” angle. He’s been around longer than the others.

Uncanny X-Force #6 (Marvel)
Andy: Every issue this series makes a strong case for being one of Marvel’s best. And how cool is Fantomex?
Jeff: The Deathlok-time-travel stuff makes my head hurt. This was the worst issue yet.
Arnab: Robots from the future, an entire world in a snow globe, and some major ass kicking, what more could you want from a great issue?

Uncanny X-Men #534 (Marvel)
Jeff: It’s sad when they have to put a back-up reprint of a title that has nothing to do with X-Men in order to sell the book, and said back-up is so much better.
Arnab: As mediocre as this arc has been, I thought that was a really good conclusion.

Witchblade #143 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech:
Nicely done two part arc here guys! So Top Cow, can Gleason get his own mini series/back up story from Marz and can Matt D. Smith be the artist?

Wolverine and Jubilee #3 (Marvel)
Andy: Kathryn Immonen has completely redeemed herself in my eyes as an X-writer with this series. Lover her characterization of Wolvie and Jubes. Plus, Phil Noto’s art is just HOT!

X-Men #9 (Marvel)
Andy: The story is dragging…I like the main villain, but it’s wordy and Bachalo’s art can be confusing.
Jeff: I freakin’ love this book. Bachalo? Good. Gischler? Good. Dark Beast? GOOOOD!
Arnab: This was by far the best issue of this arc. The writing was witty, funny, and entertaining and the art is growing on me.

    @Jeff – re:New Mutants#23 I had that same thought about Legion.

  2. Nick

I got behind last week and STILL haven’t even read all my books from last Wednesday, so no chirps from me. Total Fail Whale!! 🙁

  3. InfiniteSpeech

I don’t want Legion to be the cause of Age of X only because he was the reason behind Age of Apocalypse. I’m liking the story despite my initial misgivings but that would be a bit of a letdown for me to see that Legion is at the center of all of this.
