Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 07/24/19

Action Comics #1013 (DC)
Martin: The Leviathan story’s been intriguing so far, & I like the concept of Rose & Thorn. Robinson Goode remains a mystery but not quite enough to pique my interest. I was also annoyed by a typo the editors should have caught: “then” instead of “than.”

Archie vs Predator II #1 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: The crossover you never saw coming is back and I’m here till the end!

Batman: Curse of the White Knight #1 (DC Black Label)
Infinite Speech: It looks like lightning is going to strike twice here because Sean Gordon Murphy is delivering quality storytelling on both fronts with this awesome version of Gotham and the Batman lore!

Bladerunner 2019 #1 (Titan)
Infinite Speech: I didn’t know what to expect here but Ash is my new favorite character in the world of Bladerunner! This issue takes the alley oop from what came before and slam dunks it with precision!

Dial H for Hero #5 (DC)
Martin: Humphries is killing it on this. It’s such a bizarre Silver Age concept, which I enjoy anyway, but this issue expands on the H Dial with a visual treat of Quinones’ depiction of the “Heroverse” & encounters with various hero origins. So great.

Excellence #3 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Whatever you’re asking for in a comic know that this creative team is delivering all of that and more in Excellence!

Farmhand #10 (Image)
Infinite Speech: These cliffhangers are killing me! Mostly because Guillory has crafted a creepy world that gets more dangerous with each page turn!

Flash #75 (DC)
Martin: A good ending to what’s been one of the better arcs in the Rebirth era – a look at Flash’s early career. As appropriate for the character, time travel is involved, but this story also signals a return to hope that’s been missing from the Flash for too long.
Infinite Speech: I need this type of momentum going forward because the title was getting a little boring for a while.

House of X #1 (Marvel)
Arnab: It’s been a minute since I’ve cared about the X-Men, but Hickman was exactly the right person to bring them back to where they belong, at the top of the Marvel pecking order.
Infinite Speech: Hickman dropped so many gems in this first issue that you’d be crazy not to give this one a look! He even made Cyclops bearable the entire issue

Livewire #8 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Some comics are a “must have” for your pull list and Vita Ayala’s Livewire is one of those!

Psi-Lords #2 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: I was on the fence after the first issue but this one here has pulled me over with it’s intense action, hairless cat-people, and Renato’s art is fabulous!

Weatherman Vol 2 #2 (Image)
Infinite Speech: “Black guy sacrificing himself so the others can live” is a trope I’ve seen too many times but other than that this was another solid issue from the creative team.

Wonder Woman #75 (DC)
Martin: Another anniversary-sized issue that wraps up the current arc, with much the same level of success as Flash. Many loose threads tied up this issue, with Diana reuniting with her people in Themyscira, and a great supporting role by Nubia.
