Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 06/13/18

Astonishing X-Men #12 (Marvel)
NickZ: Bringing Xavier back to life is nothing new, but bringing him back in a version that feels fresh and mysterious is no small task! I can’t wait to see where “X” pops up next!

Batman #48 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Tom King is NOT here to give you the standard lead up to the biggest wedding of the year! This issue was tense
Martin: 4/5 stars. A very suitably creepy and unsettling Joker story with great accompanying art, and yet… Batman almost seems as if he’s in a daze when dealing, or NOT dealing, with the Joker.
NickZ: One of the more stranger Batman and Joker encounters in awhile. I found Batman’s silence throughout the issue very unsettling.

Batman Prelude to the Wedding Nightwing vs. Hush #1 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. In a similar manner to the previous prelude issue, the parts with the villain are less satisfying than the parts dealing with the Bat family and their interactions.
NickZ: A fun bachelor party for Batman that leads Hush and Nightwing evaluating their current relationship with Bruce. Also, we learn who Batman has chosen as his best man!

Black Science #36 (Image)
NickZ: Such an emotionally magical story of love’s resilience through hate, heartbreak, betrayal, and tragedy!

Curse of Brimstone #3 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Interesting characters and an intriguing premise, but the pacing is a bit off and the main villains are still too vaguely defined and a bit cliche in their actions. Tan’s art lifts the score.

Dazzler #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: A cute but unnecessary story.

Deadpool #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Deadpool 2 was garbage and this book is trying to turn comic book Deadpool into movie Deadpool, tired Ryan Reynolds jokes and all. Come on Skottie Young, you’re better than this.

Death or Glory #2 (Image)
Infinite Speech: This book is so %$#! good!

Deathstroke #32 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This issue proves that Batman needs to mind his own business sometimes but the cliffhanger is definitely a game changer here!
NickZ: This is actually turning out to be a great match up between Slade and the Bat. If Deathstroke turns out to be Damian’s biological father, I won’t even be mad.

Doctor Strange #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Giving Waid a chance here so I’ll hang out with Strange in space for a bit.
NickZ: Taking magic away from the Doc was fun and interesting the first time around but doing it again immediately after is just lazy. Also, people buy this book because they actually like seeing all that crazy magical s***!

Green Arrow #41 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The first part of a short 2-part arc sees Ollie return to his classic goatee look and focuses on his Robin Hood-esque outlook on life as he deals with a prison transfer. Great character study of what makes GA more than just “Batman with a Bow.”

Green Lanterns #48 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A Jessica Cruz-focused issue, as she goes on the run after being detained by a rookie Green Lantern. It’s still unclear exactly why the GL Corps is hunting her, and more particularly, why Hal Jordan is always such a jerk.

Hunt for Wolverine Weapon Lost #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: This rag tag bunch of detectives looking for Logan is actually pretty damn enjoyable group but I’m not sure how I feel about turning Cypher into a literal cyber junkie.

Infinity Countdown #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: This series is nuts! You don’t want to miss the battle between Ultron, Adam Warlock, the Silver Surfer, and Galactus! There are major ramifications for all involved!

Isola #3 (Image)
Martin: 5/5 stars. Visually stunning, compelling characters, intriguing and mysterious setting… this gorgeous fantasy book has it all. The stakes for Rook and Queen Olwyn get higher in this issue, & the story offers more about their backgrounds and the politics of the world.

Justice League #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Expectations were high for this one and Snyder and Cheung exceeded those! Is issue #2 out yet?
Martin: 4/5 stars. The opening pages sell the entire issue, by using Martian Manhunter’s telepathic connection of the League to let them interact with each other, as well as try to do their best Batman impression. It’s a great bit of humor that I hope we see more of.
NickZ: In a single issue Synder and Cheung have made Justice League the flag ship book it hasn’t been since before the New 52! It looks like Scott is not done breaking the DC Universe just yet!

The Man of Steel #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Ugh a weekly series and on the second issue we already have 3 artists on this. Might have to just pick this up in trade.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. The bits with Green Lantern & Toyman are good, as are the characters & interactions at the Daily Planet. Less successful is the overall dragging out of the Lois & Jon storyline, and no further character development for Rogol Zaar.
NickZ: Bendis already took away the best thing about rebirth Superman (his family)! If this is what his Superman book is going to explore, then count me out because we’ve been here and done that too many times.

Nightwing #45 (DC)
NickZ: The dangers of technology seem to be a recent reoccurring theme in a lot of comic books lately but this is a unique take.

Paper Girls #21 (Image)
NickZ: The future is going to be crazy if this is any indication. I love how BKV is using the girls situation of traveling through time to impact them on such a personal level.

Rise of the Black Panther #6 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The updated origin has been masterfully told by Evan Narcisse and the new twists feel like organic additions and not forced.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #86 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: We find out Michaelangelo’s middle name but I need this battle with the Rat King to hurry up and happen.

The Unexpected #1 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Interesting set-up but suffers from being a “team” book by trying to do too much by introducing new characters as well as a whole new part of the DC universe in the wake of Dark Nights: Metal. The Walking Dead #180 (Image)
NickZ: The idea of having Rick and his crew clash with another group over societal issue is refreshing. I just hope it doesn’t turn to violence because we’ve had enough of that in this series.

Weapon X #19 (Marvel)
NickZ: So now that the real Wolverine is back they are going to have Old Man Logan just up and die? And who knew Sabretooth just needed to be put in charge of a team and Omega Red just needed a friend to get them to completely change their murderous ways? LAME!

Wonder Woman Annual #2 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. It’s nice to have an annual follow-up on the main storyline so that it doesn’t feel superfluous, but other than that, and the fact that this story has zero to do with Jason, there’s little else to recommend it.

X-Men Gold #29 (Marvel)
NickZ: Guggenheim has not sold me on Storm being Thor, on Colossus & Kitty’s wedding, on Prestige as a good code name, or on Kitty’s leadership! AT ALL!

X-Men Red #5 (Marvel)
NickZ: While the X-Men have always been a metaphor for combating bigotry and intolerance, Taylor has been able to modernize that metaphor like never before! Jean is teaching the X-Men (and us) how to stand up to modern incarnations of hate and oppression! Everyone needs to be reading this book!
