Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 04/11/18

Adventure Time Comics #22 (Boom!)
NickZ: Billy and the Lich was the most interesting story but the others were cute too.

Animosity: Evolution #5 (AfterShock)
Infinite Speech: Did NOT see that ending coming and probably neither did Wintermute!

Astonisher #6 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: The supporting cast here continues to outshine Magnus but I’m okay with that.

Avengers #688 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Roberto better not die!
NickZ: How many times can one character sacrifice himself in the same story?

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #21 (DC)
NickZ: The Birds take on the Calculator but this time they’ve got Ollie, and some sirens to back them up!

The Beauty #21 (Image)
NickZ: No one survives very long once they’ve learned the secret of the Beauty.

Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #17 (Marvel)
NickZ: Ben makes his final decision on his deal with the devil just in time to deal with ghost rider Kane!

Champions #19 (Marvel)
NickZ: You can totally feel the change in creative teams but I’m going to give Zub and Izaakse a few issues before I make any judgments.

Darth Vader #14 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Everything about this post Clone War/Pre Episode IV story is great! Though I feel sorry for what’s going to happen to the Mon Cals

Deadly Class #33 (Image)
NickZ: Everyone of these kids has been through some terrible s*** but bless their hearts, they keep on fighting.

The Dead Hand #1 (Image)
Martin: 4/5 stars. An awesome Cold War spy story with an incredible twist at the end of the issue, and spectacular art by Stephen Mooney and Jordie Bellaire.

Detective Comics #978 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’ve not liked the Colony storyline and I still am baffled why Batwing and Azrael would leave Batman to join Kate Kane with their former adversaries. That said, this issue does explore the situation a bit more and include an unexpected “villian.”
NickZ: This entire run of Detective has just been a test of how much s*** can we put poor Timmy through.

Doctor Strange #388 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Those two pages with Bats and Doctor Strange was one of the best moments in comics this week!
NickZ: Strange has sunken so low that his best hope is also his archenemy!

Domino #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Gail Simone & the rest of the creative team kicks off the new series with near perfection and we get a remix of Cherry Bomb!
NickZ: Domino has a birthday party that leads to her possible death???

Exiles #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This is one of my favorite teams and I’m all in on this new incarnation of my favorite time hoppers outside of the Time Bandits!
NickZ: Blink is assembling an interesting group of Exiles in what feels like the start of Marvel’s version of Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Falcon #7 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I really don’t like the new Patriot enough to care if Falcon, Misty, and Blade rescue him or not.

Flash #44 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Di Giandomenico makes every panel worth looking at and the cliff hanger hopefully leads to the upcoming event.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Another “New Flash Family” team-up, which is fun, but there are still issues with Barry thinking he’s the only one who can save the world/universe/time/etc. Barry already sacrificed himself in CoIE, so him continually doing so here has no teeth to it.

Immortal Men #1 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. There is so much potential with with. Clever ideas about a war between the immortals & an otherworldly realm where they can meet. However, the execution in this 1st issue needs fine-tuning. Full review on @ComicAttack https://comicattack.net/2018/04/dc-comics-reviews-the-immortal-men-1/

Justice League of America #28 (DC)
NickZ: Apparently there is a superhero “god” that the JLA has to go back in time to save or else there won’t be any superheros in the present? Yes, it’s as dumb as it sounds.

Ninjak #6 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: A new story reveals another new assassin but it’s Ninjak’s former understudy so how deadly can he be?

Oblivion Song #2 (Image)
NickZ: Leaning how earth ended up in the situation that it is in was actually quite emotional. This series is off to a great start.

Old Man Logan #38 (Marvel)
NickZ: Logan killed so many people just to get face to face with Kingpin to walk away? WTF? He knows Kingpin is responsible, why didn’t he just kill him?

Planet of the Apes: Ursus #4 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: David Walker is phenomenal with this series as he takes Ursus to another level of depth and character development within a layered story you should be reading!

Red Hood and the Outlaws #21 (DC)
NickZ: I guess someone in the Outlaws has to be a junky, so Bizarro is making up for Roy’s absence?

Star Wars: Thrawn #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This issue is about the rise of Arihnda Pryce and with the all the backstabbing in the Empire it’s a wonder they kept power for so long.

Supergirl #20 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. So much going on because it has to wrap up the entire series. Even so, Orlando decided to ALSO introduce a new character (a preview of his upcoming “The Unexpected” series) which adds to the chaos. However, Kara’s characterization is fantastic.

Sword of Ages #3 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Gabriel Rodriguez’s latest issue has everything I wanted! There’s swords, sorcery, and ritual combat all woven together in a damn good story.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #81 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: I never thought that Master Splinter would creep me out as leader of the Foot and Casey Jones would be cool but here we are.

Titans #22 (DC)
Martin: 2.5/5 stars. This is just a mess, and it weren’t the last issue of this version of the Titans before revamping, I wouldn’t have read it. The Titans are almost non-existent, and as much as I enjoy Mallah & Brain, the dialogue between them here is choppy & awkward.
NickZ: The Justice League are behaving so ridiculously out of character in this story that it just makes me laugh at how stupid it is.

Trinity #21 (DC)
NickZ: I am so over this Deimos guy already, the only thing keeping me reading is the back and forth between the trinity.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #31 (Marvel)
NickZ: I can only compare this issue of Squirrel Girl to the episode of Star Trek TNG called “The Inner Light” and it is just as moving and bittersweet. The perfect send off for long time artist Erica Henderson!

Venomized #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: You know the situation is bad when Magneto has to keep Spider-Man and Venom from attacking each other long enough to save the planet.

Wonder Woman #44 (DC)
Martin: 2/5 stars. While maybe slightly better than the previous issue, the main problem with this issue is that it’s boring. Darkseid & Wonder Woman just keep punching each other. Steve Tremor fights Parademons & Furies. Jason acts stupid & fights Grail.

X-Men Blue #25 (Marvel)
NickZ: Magneto turns down an offer to help make mutantkind the dominant species on earth? I guess his time under Cyclops leadership had more of an impact on him than anyone thought. Also, I’m very excited for this new X-Men team!

X-Men Red #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: This is the X-Men book we’ve been waiting for! Cassandra Nova is the perfect evil to challenge Jean Grey’s goodness!
