Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 02/13/19

Accell #18 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Accell finds a new ability which is cool but writer Joe Casey has yet to make the villains worth reading about.

Amazing Spider-Man #15 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
They gotta stop making me feel sorry for Rhino in these books!

Avengers: No Road Home #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The same team that brought us No Surrender is back to decimate Herc’s family and reintroduce some tension between Hawkeye and Hulk! I’m here for the entire event!

Batman Who Laughs #3 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I honestly got halfway through and stopped. This series isn’t for me.

Criminal #2 (Image)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. This was recommended to me by one of the staff at my local comics shop, @cparadize_pas and I’m really glad he did. A fun, almost “meta” story about a (fictional) old school comics creator & conventions, all with a crime noir setting.

Detective Comics #998 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. After last issue spiced things up to make this arc more fun, this was more of a mixed bag. It’s fun seeing Batman & Etrigan together, but the Hugo Strange scene was pointless, & Silas Stone comes out of nowhere as a former mentor of Bruce’s.

Electric Warriors #4 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. An under-the-radar science-fiction series that’s gone far beyond what appeared to be its original premise. The reveal of what happens to the gladiators who lose their contests is chilling.

Flash #64 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Batman and Flash team-ups are the best and Williamson raises the bar with part 2 of their investigation!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Part 2 of “The Price” 4-issue cross-over. The best part of this story was the interaction with Bruce and Barry at the beginning, as they each talk to themselves about what they think about the other. Gotham Girl’s “lair” was also depicted really well.

Hawkman #9 (DC)
Martin:
4/5 stars. Bryan Hitch’s artwork is stellar in this one, including a lot of action-oriented scenes and some great scenes with Carter and Madame Xanadu in her curio shop. The visuals pretty much carry this issue, as the action takes priority vs character development.

Hit-Girl Season 2 #1 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Hit-Girl finds out a movie about her life is being made while stopping a school shooting and I wasn’t impressed.

Ironheart #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Eve L. Ewing and Luciano Vecchio are taking Ironheart to the next level with both her character and art and you should be here for the ride!

Justice League Dark #8 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I’ve seen this “something is coming to destroy all magic” story before but I’m willing to see how this plays out.
Martin: 5/5 stars. This story is complete with fear, suspense, tension, and is downright creepy without being violent or gross. The creative team have done a superb job making readers care about these characters. And kudos for bringing back Khalid!

Kick-Ass #12 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Well that happy ending didn’t last long but Steve Niles did craft one hell of a series here!

Livewire #3 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Vita is making it hard to cheer for Livewire but that’s the best part about their writing and complex nuances they put into the character. If you’re not reading Livewire you should start right now!

Supergirl #27 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I’ve been enjoying this run, and this was still a good comic, particularly with the scenes that develop Z’ndr’s character and background more. On the other hand, the main story was excessively violent and dark, which is not why I read Supergirl.

Superman #9 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I’m still not sold on the whole premise of Jon & Lois going off with Jor-El, then Lois returning home and leaving her son. My main enjoyment from this issue came from wondering if Superman’s fight with Mongul is the one depicted in “Naomi” #1.

Thor #10 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: That cover really fooled me. This was one brutal issue about fathers and sons.

Wonder Twins #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Mark Russell made our jokes about the Wonder Twins some of the best parts of the issue and I’m hooked!
Martin: 4/5 stars. A great start to yet another comic in the Wonder Comics line, this time taking the unlikely pair of old 1970’s Superfriends rejects and putting them into a school situation with all of the trials and tribulations that come from being awkward teens.
