Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 01/29/20

Action Comics #1019 (DC Comics)
Martin: 3/5 stars. A weird grab-bag that tries to tie the Legion of Doom (2 of whom, Grodd & Cheetah, do little more than grunt) with Leviathan (remember him? Yep – still around), & Robinson Goode/Red Cloud. The result is not great.

Archie vs Predator II #5 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: This has been the CRAZIEST crossover and if you enjoy Predators or Archie you should read this immediately!

Batman #87 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. We’re only 2 issues into Tynion’s run but already things are off to a fast start, with some interesting looks at Riddler & Penguin. I like the interaction between Bruce & Lucius, though I miss Alfred, & Cheshire showing up is cool.

Batman: Curse of the White Knight #6 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Was not expecting some of these plot twists as this may be the best part of Murphy & Hollingsworth’s story!

Batman/Superman #6 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This issue, the end of the 1st arc, slows down for a more character focus story, involving Diana’s new lack of trust in Bruce & Clark, which I feel has been done before. The set-up to the next arc looks promising, though.

Black Panther #20 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Coates continues to take Black Panther to new heights but man is Baast one annoying deity.

Detective Comics #1019 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. This started out as an intriguing Norse-themed cult-type mystery, which was much stronger than this conclusion, which involves the supernatural & Batman just hand-waving it to the side with no repercussions.

Detective Comics Annual #3 (DC Comics)
Martin: 5/5 stars. As a tribute to Alfred, this issue excels, particularly the back-up story. In a clever flashback story, Alfred writes a former MI-6 colleague about Bruce’s 1st week as #Batman but without revealing anything. Very touching.

Dial H for Hero #11 (DC Comics)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The penultimate issue of Humphries’ & Quinones’ story, & I’m already missing it. 1 of the most imaginative comics by DC right now, with some of the most fleshed-out teen heroes. Loved the homage to 90’s Superman!

Flash #87 (DC Comics)
Martin: 4/5 stars. While Flash calling Captain Cold “Criminal” over & over didn’t quite work for me (it’s just not natural), I did really enjoy the interactions between Flash & Cold. Flash’s relationship with his Rogues Gallery is one of the best in comics.

Folklords #3 (Boom! Studios)
Martin: 4/5 stars. You have never experienced Hansel & Gretel as characters until you read this issue. Wow – totally took me off guard. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this intriguing, compelling, & fun series.

Ghostbusters: Year One #1 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Wondering why we didn’t get these a while back but regardless, it’s a great fill in to the original movie with a focus on Winston!

Green Lantern: Blackstars #3 (DC Comics)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Morrison always writes crazy, inventive, sometimes nearly impenetrable stories. His take on Hal Jordan & the GL Corps follows suit. The science-fiction trappings are perfect for Morrison’s weirdness.

Justice League #39 (DC Comics)
Martin: 3.5/stars. The “end” of Snyder’s run. Over the past 39 issues he’s built up a huge multiverse spanning threat with Perpetua & the Legion of Doom, but there’s actually no conclusion this issue. Not sure how they’ll resolve that.

Justice League Dark #19 (DC Comics)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The end of Tynion’s run, which has been spectacular. JL Dark has been my favorite Justice League title of Rebirth, & this ending is worthy of Tynion’s run. Poor Swamp Thing!

The Last God #4 (DC Comics)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. An engaging & compelling fantasy horror story, with each issue revealing more about the world, its cultures, & its history. I was excited to read that it’s being adapted into a @Wizards_DnD campaign setting!

Roku #4 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Not sure why I’m not liking Roku as much as I did when she was first introduced. From her current look to her portrayal here it’s just not doing it for me.

Shazam #10 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. It’s so great to see Tawky Tawny & Mr. Mind in this, & I really enjoyed that Billy’s biological dad is a much more complex & relatable character than I first thought. While the publishing schedule is erratic, it’s worth the wait.

Superman #19 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. While I like the scenes with Clark, Lois, Perry, & Jimmy, there’s a LOT of dialogue in the front of the book, to the exclusion of all else. The character development is strong but it’s so wordy. Mongul’s plot seemed like a different book.

The Terrifics #24 (DC Comics)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I’m one of the few who actually enjoys Bizarro-speak, as long as it’s applied consistently. But, I’m OK that this arc seems to be over. A few surprise appearances help make the story fun & unexpected.

Visitor #2 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Still no clue as to who the Visitor is but a little more has been revealed about what he is. However the rest of this reads very similar to the first issue.

Wonder Woman #750 (DC)
Martin: 5/5 stars. Yes, it’s a high score, but the quality of the creative teams & stories for a 96-page anniversary issue is excellent. @GailSimone knocks it out of the park with a heartwarming story, &@ruckawriter contributes a fantastic story!

Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’m not a fan of Batman Who Laughs, but there’s a lot to like in this issue: a great fight scene between Apex Lex & the Infected, a surprise character cameo, & an unexpected twist.
