Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 01/15/2020

Action Comics #1018 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. It’s good catching up with Fire Chief Melody Moore; she seemed important at the start of Bendis’ run but hasn’t been around much. Less successful is Robinson Goode’s Red Cloud origin, which feels rushed & out of nowhere.

Batman #86 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Tynion’s new run on Batman kicks-off in a more classic fashion vs King’s run, and is accompanied by great art from Tony S. Daniels. The supporting cast of Lucius, Selina, & Bullock all have good parts, & seeing Cheshire was fun.

Batman & the Outsiders #9 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. The character relationships, especially between Jefferson & Tatsu, and Duke & Cass, are the main selling point. I’m less thrilled with Batman’s treatment of the team, & vice-versa. The Superman cameo didn’t fit.

Detective Comics #1018 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The start of a new arc, post-Alfred & without Commissioner Gordon due to his infection by the Batman Who Laughs. A bit of a slower-paced issue in the aftermath of City of Bane, but it has some pretty gruesome scenes as well.

Dial H for Hero #10 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. I’m going to be so sad when this series ends it’s the most fun & creative book DC is putting out right now. Joe Quinones’ art is perfect & the world of the dual heroes & villains (Starborg? Wonderhawk?) is a feast for the eyes.

Gotham City Monsters #5 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. It’s monsters vs monsters, with some big splashy (& violent) battle scenes, but where this book excels is the characterization, especially Red Cloud & Lady Clay, but also in the creative use of DC’s monster heroes & villains.

Justice League Dark #18: (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Alvaro Martinez Bueno’s art is fantastic, especially the reveal of a surprise adversary near the end of the issue. This story feels as big, & more tense, than the current main Justice League story.

Supergirl #38 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I like the idea of secret infected heroes plotting, but now that everybody knows who they are, the shock is gone & I don’t need to read on-going series with infected heroes; a 1-shot is fine. The star of this issue is Krypto!

Young Justice #12 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. It’s been a year & we still don’t have any answers as to how the team remembers each other. I like the inclusion of the Wonder Twins; Miguel, Summer & the H-Dial; and Warlord & Skartaris. But, have them DO something.
