Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 03/28/18

Abbott #3 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: Saladin Ahmed is killing it with this story along with one hell of an art team that already makes me want more supernatural detective adventures with Abbott!

Animosity #13 (AfterShock)
Infinite Speech: Marguerite Bennett continues to take you on an emotional rollercoaster and the last few pages are just a Bruce Lee kick to the feels!

Avengers #686 (Marvel)
NickZ: There were a few twists thrown in here but nothing earth shattering.
Infinite Speech: This has been one fun little Avengers story but nothing too big happens here.

Black Panther #171 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The redemption of Thunderball, more Manifold, the Wakandan salute, and an old X-Men enemy make this issue worth picking up!

Cyber Force #1 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: I knew this creative team wouldn’t let me down and now I’m glad that one of my favorite superhero teams is back!

Dark Knights Metal #6 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The publishing delays really killed the momentum of this story, and as typical with a lot of DC series endings, this one tries to pack too much in. That said, it is a satisfying conclusion to the Metal event, and sets up the next set of stories.
NickZ: For a Batman book, Wonder Woman was without question, the MVP! I loved the use of the Joker too, even if you could see it coming a mile away.! Out of all of the ramifications to come out of this event, I’m most interested in the new developments at the Source Wall.

Detective Comics #977 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I would have preferred more of the Tim & Bruce conversation and exploring their character relationship, as well as more with Luke & Tam. The “future bad Tim” stuff has never really worked for me.

Doomsday Clock #4 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Incredible art is matched by a great story with the (overdue?) origin of the new Rorschach. The original Watchmen had a few character-focused issues as well, so this follows that structure and I’m okay with this issue not “advancing the plot.”
NickZ: I continue to be underwhelmed by this book. It’s not bad, I think they just over hyped it. Isn’t this book supposed to be about Dr Manhattan and Superman? Where are they?
Infinite Speech: Anyone have trouble sleeping? Well this book is the cure and proves that even with eye melting art a boring story is still a boring story.

Flash #43 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Flash/Barry for me has always been about hope – moreso than the other characters. So when he loses that, or keeps going back and forth, it feels like it’s just not a Flash comic. Not sure why it took him so long to figure out how to “fix” Grodd.
Infinite Speech: This seems like we took the long way to get to the conclusion here.

Giles #2 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: Giles and his little vampire girlfriend are the only thing worth of interest in this book so far.
Infinite Speech: Really hope this picks up a bit next issue.

Hit-Girl #2 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Well now we see what game Hit-Girl is playing and it’s about to get real complicated for Mano!

Incidentals #7 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Chen is hiding something and that’s the real story here but not much else happens.

The Invincible Iron Man #598 (Marvel)
NickZ: Blade showed up in this series for absolutely no reason. I can’t wait to see what Doom is going to do to those villains who tried to destroy him.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #25 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: I was NOT prepared for Shattered Grid to kick off with TWO unexpected deaths! RIP Saba!

Moon Knight #193 (Marvel)
NickZ: Moon Knight turns his greatest weakness into his greatest strength as he takes one final hail-Mary run at the Sun God.

Mystik U #3 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. A huge double-sized conclusion that covers a lot of ground and yet somehow still manages to give each character his or her due. I really enjoyed this elseworld-type series and hope that it gets a sequel.

Old Man Hawkeye #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: Old Man Hawkeye proves to be just as badass as ever while starting his revenge run on some old frienemies!

Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #302 (Marvel)
NickZ: Peter’s trip though time has disastrous results for his young counterpart of that era.

Planet of the Apes: Ursus #3 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: David Walker has reignited my excited for the Planet of the Apes mythology!

Saga #50 (Image)
NickZ: If you can’t start off your 50th issue with some squirt-inducing cunnilingus, then what is even the point of having a creator-owned series?

Silencer #3 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. This series is turning out much better than expected. Honor is a more complex character than might have been assumed, & while I usually find prolonged combat scenes in comics boring, here they are almost cinematic w/ clever use of the Zone of Silence.
Infinite Speech: This is the BEST of the New Age of Heroes titles!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #80 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: With so much action and emotional back and forth the art really dropped the ball with making the impact needed to help me enjoy this.

Teen Titans #18 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. The art is really good, but the story doesn’t work. The conflict between Beast Boy and the rest of the Titans wasn’t really set-up properly to make it believable, so both Gar and the Titans end up looking like jerks. Joran is a 1-dimensional villain.
Infinite Speech: Raven is shooting her shot with Kid Flash which is the best part of this issue.

Terrifics #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Really great art; overall a comic with a sense of fun & adventure that celebrates the weird & goofy side of DC & its vast multiverse. This is the kind of comic we should have more of, instead of yet another “ultimate ninja assassin with shades of gray!”
Infinite Speech: Way too many Fantastic Four clichés in this for it to stand out for me. Incredibles did it better.

Wonder Woman #43 (DC)
Martin: 2/5 stars. This was just all-around bad writing. Why in the world would Diana choose to release the Furies and fight them to beat an answer out of them when she can quickly use her lasso to get the truth in order to save lives? Ridiculous.

X-Men Blue #24 (Marvel)
NickZ: Magneto and Polaris prove they are one father/daughter combo that you do not want to mess with!

X-O Manowar #13 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Aric’s time here is done but now I want a mini series about those bounty hunters.
