Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 05/29/13

CHIRPBANNER1

Adventures of Superman #1 (DC)
Andy: If you love jolly Superman like in “All-Star Superman,” this issue is a must read!

adventure a1Adventure Time Annual #1 (kaboom!)

Dr. Bustos: A great collection of shorts by a fantastic collection of creators. A

Avenging Spider-Man #21 (Marvel)
Jeff: Hulk showed up in a lot of issues this week, and did much of nothing.

Catwoman Annual #1 (DC)
Andy: WTF? This felt like a riff off “Batman Returns”… in a bad way. Nice art and the new cops are interesting, but yeah…
Arnab: I actually kinda liked it. Unfortunately, the rest of the run has been crap, so I doubt I’ll continue liking it.

Chew #34 (Image)
Arnab: Yes! I loved this issue. Hamburger guy? Hilarious. Kinda makes you wonder what’d happen if he ate certain other things…
Jeff: Ok, the guy who can turn into food is a bit over the edge.

Earth 2 Annual #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
Looked better than it read.

Five Weapons #4 (Image)
Infinite Speech:
Pick this title up it’s too much fun!

Gambit #13 (Marvel)
Arnab: I don’t know who this guy is but I already like him more than Tony Stark.
Dr. Bustos: It amazes me how easy it is to get in control of an Iron Man armor. B
Jeff: The art on this book is really hurting it.

Indestructible Hulk #8 (Marvel)
Jeff: Speaking of art that hurts, it’s time for Simonson to hang it up.

Justice League America #4 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
Getting better so I guess I’ll stick with it a bit longer.

New Avengers #6 (Marvel)
Jeff: For a book with such cataclysmic ramifications for the Marvel Universe, this book is just plain boring.

king conan 1King Conan: Hour of the Dragon #1 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Brian Wood’s series made me give it a look — Truman’s writing delivered but Giorello’s artwork sucked me in.

Pirate Eye: A Pirate’s Life is Not For Me #1 (Action Lab)
Andy: I like the concept of this series, and the first one-shot was great, but the choppy art hurt the storytelling here.

Princless Vol. 2 #3 (Action Lab)
Dr. Bustos: Awesome fight, werwolves, elves, art, and guardian spirits, more please. A

Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual #1 (DC)
Arnab:
The art in this issue is not good. It’s distractingly inconsistent in the most detrimental way. Really should have had just one color artist, at the very least. Good story though.

Savage Wolverine #5 (Marvel)
Jeff: Damn, I really wanted the ending to be awesome. A few funny moments, but overall this felt rushed.

Sonic the Hedgehog #249 (Archie)

Andy: 10 year old Andy’s geeking out on this “Mega Man” crossover. I have a bad feeling about Proto Man…

Star Trek #21 (IDW)
Andy: “After Darkness” p1: This was a strange choice. Not sure how I feel about it. Loved the movie though and this series overall.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #22 (IDW)
Andy: Presents the best elements from all corners of the TMNT mythos in one action packed and emotionally charged issue!
Arnab: Hot Damn Diggity, that issue was fabulous in so many ways.
Infinite Speech: Best title out this week! Waltz and Santoluoco have brought some serious quality to the franchise!
Jeff Lake: Bold new arc that raises the stakes. Our half-shelled heroes need help!

Uncanny X-Force #5 (Marvel)
Jeff: This book is close to getting the boot. Not even Adrian Alphona can save it.

wake 1The Wake #1 (Vertigo)
Andy: A solid start. Makes me want to go re-read Michael Crichton’s “The Sphere.” I’m a sucker for all dark things under the sea.
Arnab: Sean Murphy’s art in this book is that delicious tiramisu after a delicious dinner.
Infinite Speech: Nine more issues of this? Hope it gets better.
Jeff: I’m just a sucker for Sean Murphy’s art. A great introductory issue.
Jeff Lake: Something lurks beneath the waves…and it ain’t Ariel. A great debut from two great creators. My #1 pick.

Wolverine and the X-Men #30 (Marvel)
Andy: The more awful things that happen to Broo, the happier I am as an X-fan.
Dr. Bustos: Quentin Quire is quickly becoming one of my favorites and I still hold hope for Broo. B+
Infinite Speech: So glad to see things are back on track as the new Hellfire Club moves into action!
Jeff: If they had kept one artist on this book, it would have been a fantastic issue.

X-Men #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Solid first issue sans the weird girl fight at the school. The villain’s clear & I love Jubilee — very excited for this book!
Arnab: Nice, solid start. I will read this book as long as Rachel is in it and Wolverine is not. Am I the only one though, who feels like this is the same cast as Uncanny X-Force?
Dr. Bustos: This is the beginning of a dangerous adventure, I like it. A
Infinite Speech: Great start from Wood and Coipel! These girls are gong to kick some ass!
Jeff: Anything Olivier Coipel draws is gold in my book.
