The first issue of Seven Secrets impressed and hit all the right points that had me impatiently waiting for this issue. So now we find out if all of that waiting was worth it as the creative team officially introduces us to Caspar and takes us deeper into The Seven.

Baby Caspar!

Compared to the first issue which was pretty much nonstop action, Taylor slows things down a bit so that we can take time to get to know Caspar. He not only succeeds in fleshing out this character and getting you to care but has no trouble handling a large cast taking this journey with him. So not only do we get to meet new Keepers and Holders but it’s good to see that Taylor has infused them with some personality and they’re not all your average stoic secret assassin types. Canto would probably be the standout here from his banter with Tajana and his seemingly “big brother” role to Caspar. Well, as close to that as a secret group of assassins can be I guess. Taylor also infuses Caspar’s tale with some heart when he finally meets his parents and we see the struggle between the three of them. But the kick in the chest is a talk between Sigurd and Caspar that makes a scene in the last issue even more sad.

Di Nicuolo and Baiamonte keep the same energy they brought from the first issue with dynamic sequences and a slew of great character designs to deliver quite a bit of eye candy. The training montage is excellent as the brief meetings with some of the Keepers and Holders who mentored Caspar tells so much in just a short time. The panel layouts also add to the overall effectiveness of that sequence as well. The last few pages really pack an emotional punch as Caspar is given bad news and Baiamonte’s use of reds really set the mood and enhance the narrative.

If I had one complaint it would be how could an organization that specializes in secrecy let it slip about about Caspar’s lineage to where it was used to taunt him by one of his classmates? Someone should have assigned a Keeper and Holder to that secret if you ask me.

Other than that, Seven Secrets #2 is just as amazing as the first issue and very much worth adding to your pull list. So go ahead and do that.
