Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 12/5/12

“Action Comics” #15 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: Wow, this issue made me sympathize with Mxyzptlk. I want more of this Mxy. A
NickZ: I think I am ready for Morrison to move on from Superman.

“All-New X-Men” #3 (Marvel)
Andy: Am I mad this has come out two weeks in a row? Hell no! Glad to see AvX is having actual ramifications. (4.5/5) #XMen #AvX #MarvelNOW
Arnab: Not satisfied with the explanation about Magneto, not pleased with Emma’s reaction to seeing Scott. Still, decent issue. B
Jeff: The less this book features the original 5, the worse it is. Also, Bendis wrote Emma really weird.
NickZ: What was with Cyclops behaving totally different than we have seen in everything else since Avengers vs. X-Men? Weak sauce!

“Amazing Spider-Man” #699 (Marvel)
Andy: I’m hooked on this series for the first time since Dan Slott’s opening “Big Time” arc. (3.5/5) #Spiderman
Jeff: I was disappointed that Slott showed all his cards here. I wanted there to be a little more mystery.
NickZ: Not what I expected after the last issue but still some great stuff. 700 will be epic!

“Animal Man” #15 (DC)
Andy: Definitely didn’t see that last page coming. Frankenstein in this issue was badass. (4/5) #AnimalMan
Arnab: Animal Man consistently is a consistently fantastic book and this issue is no different. A
Dr. Bustos: Frankenstein shows up with an army of stitched together creatures, YES! A

“Avengers” #1 (Marvel)
Andy: I like the M.O. and the art’s phenomenal, but this issue was nothing more than solid. (3/5) #Avengers #MarvelNOW
Arnab: I really, really, really don’t like the Avengers. As a team I find most of them unbearable. And still Hickman writes them cool. Don’t know that I’ll continue on though. B
Jeff: I was disappointed that Slott showed all his cards here. I wanted there to be a little more mystery.
NickZ: The movie Avengers get defeated and now every hero in Marvel is an Avenger? Okay.

“Avenging Spider-Man” #15 (Marvel)
NickZ: This was a fun story even if it seemed that Spider-Man and Moon-Boy could somehow understand each other even though they speak different languages.

“Batwing” #15 (DC)
NickZ: The in depth writing keeps this book interesting month in and month out.

“Batman: Detective Comics” #15 (DC)
Arnab: Layman has quickly settled in Gotham and is writing a fantastic story. A
NickZ:
Layman invoked some Batman TAS feel in this issue with lots of great rogues action.
Andy: One of the best Clayface stories I’ve ever read. “Death of the Family” tie-in worthy? Not so much. (4/5) #Batman

“Before Watchmen: Comedian” #4 (DC)
NickZ:
Comedian is definitely one of the most interesting characters. You don’t know if you should hate him or like him.

“Before Watchmen: Minutemen” #5
NickZ: Darwyn Cooke is doing a fantastic job on this series. If people could get past that it’s Watchmen related, they would be loving this book.

“Blackacre” #1 (Image)
Andy: The concept of the 1% outliving us all is intriguing, but the stakes just don’t feel high enough here. (2/5) #Blackacre

“Daredevil: End of Days” #3 (Marvel)
Andy: Slow, steady and engaging. Loved the character portraits. (3.5/5) #Daredevil
Jeff: Sienkiewicz’s painted double-page spreads are mesmerizingly beautiful. This series a treat! Also: Daredevil was a man-whore.

“Deadpool” #3 (Marvel)
Arnab: I don’t really understand Dr. Strange. For a man with so much power, he’s often very useless. A-
Dr. Bustos:
More Deadpool and Dr. Strange team-ups. Love the call back between Strange and Franklin. A
NickZ: Wasn’t feeling this book the first two issues but it’s starting to grow on me.
Andy: Wong’s five lines upstaged all of Deadpool’s. Definitely not bad, but I was expecting funnier. (3/5) #Deadpool #MarvelNOW

“Doctor Who” #3 (IDW)
Jeff: Seifert’s handling of the 11th Doctor and his companions is perfect! It’s a great time to jump into the TARDIS.

“Fairest” #10 (Vertigo)
Andy: Inaki Miranda’s artwork is beautiful — even Frau and Bigby are easy on the eyes. …OK, not them. (3.5/5) #Fairest

“Fashion Beast” #4 (Avatar)
Andy: One of the strangest comics I’ve read in some time. It’s hideous and bold yet surprisingly moving. (4/5) #FashionBeast

“Ferals” #11 (Avatar)
Andy: Jump in right now and read this issue. One of the best in today’s horror comics lineup. Not for sissies. (4/5) #Ferals #werewolves

“Great Pacific” #2 (Image)
Andy: Takes it up a level from the opening issue, which is just what was needed to keep it moving. (3.5/5) #GreatPacific

“Green Arrow” #15 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: I like stories where Green Arrow is going after less fantastic villains, he seems at home in them. A

“Guarding The Globe” #4 (Skybound)
NickZ: Better team book than Avengers or Justice League.

“Haunted Horror” #2 (IDW)
Andy: One story in this classic anthology has a man who possesses dozens of severed hands that kill on command. (3.5/5) #HauntedHorror #Horror

“Hawkeye” #5 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: I liked the twist of this issue and love Kate’s impersonation skills. A

“Hellboy in Hell” #1 (Dark Horse)
Andy: This is all new to me and I like it. (3/5) #Hellboy

“I Love Trouble #1 (Image)
Andy: A quirky main character you can get behind, despite her cultured case of kleptomania. (3/5) #ILoveTrouble

“Invincible” #98 (Image)
Dr. Bustos: This is heading into that direction I don’t like in Kirkman’s work, the ultra-violent kind. C
NickZ: Holy CRAP! Two more issues, people, TWO MORE ISSUES.

“The Legend of Luther Strode” #1 (Image)
Arnab: Put down your cellphone, stow away your football, and stop reading Shakespeare, ‘ain’t nobody got time for that!’ Luthor Strode is back and he is badder than ever. A

“Legend of the Dark Knight” #3 (DC)
Andy: Trevor Hairsine & Steve Niles are a solid Dynamic Duo. Too bad the last two pages felt rushed. (4/5) #Batman

“Red She-Hulk” #60 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: I never knew how much I wanted the Red She-Hulk and Machine Man team-up. A
Andy: Lots of exposition but it moves along and the last page makes the issue. Looking forward to what comes next. (3.5/5) #Hulk

“Shadowman” #2 (Valiant)
Andy: A fucking spectacular blend of superheroes and horror. (4/5) #Shadowman #Valiant

“Star Wars: Purge: The Tyrant’s Fist” #1 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Cool use of force powers here by Vader. Worth a read for Star Wars fans. (3/5) #StarWars

“Storm Dogs” #2 (Image)
Andy: The dialogue can get lengthy at times, but each word feels like it matters. Sci-fi & crime fiction fans must read this. (4/5) #StormDogs

“Smallville” #8 (DC)
NickZ: The conclusion to the first Batman and Superman team up in Smallville and it was nothing less than you’d expect.

“Swamp Thing” #15 (DC)
Andy: Marco Rudy’s art is a great fit for this book. Things are finally picking up with Abby Arcane, too, and it’s scary. (4/5) #SwampThing
Arnab: Another fantastic issue. But there’s a part of me that feels like maybe Swampy is a selfish bastard. A-

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics: Michaelangelo” #1 (IDW)
Andy: ‘Tis the season and this old school one-shot is a fitting December read. Dated, but solid. (3/5) #TMNT

“Thunderbolts” #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Thankfully, the whole team’s assembled in the opening issue. I’ll bet you $20 Daken eventually shows up. (3/5) #Thunderbolts #MarvelNOW
Arnab: Well, the Gang’s all here. Now, let’s get this show on the road. B
Jeff: This concept just didn’t grab me. Why can’t they just keep the old villains-as-heroes concept?
NickZ: An interesting start. I’ll stick around for the next issue.

“X-Factor” #248 (Marvel)
Arnab: While it’s weird having Pip in M’s body, I think the whole brain in a different location bit is a nice twist. B
Jeff:
Pip in M’s body? This book is struggling.
NickZ: Pip in M’s body… hilarity in sues.
Andy: Bummer. Was really hoping that character stayed dead. Hilarious Shatterstar moment in this one, but otherwise… (2/5) #XFactor

“X-Men” #39 (Marvel)
Andy: I’m sure this is awesome for Daredevil and Domino fans, but for everyone else it’s OK. (2.5/5) #XMen #Daredevil
Jeff: After last issue’s success, this wrapped up a little too neatly. Missed the landing.
NickZ: Not a big fan of Domino or Daredevil, but I actually enjoyed this.
