Batman: The Dark Knight #27

Another issue goes by without words, and once again it is an excellent issue. It’s hard to say if these last two issues have been so effective because of a lack of Greg Hurwitz’s dialogue and narration, or the excellent illustrations by Alberto Ponticelli. In any case, this story about illegal immigration and slave labor is well done. The issue is well paced and laid out, the artwork is clean and easy to interpret, making this a surprisingly easy story to follow, given the lack of narration. Hurwitz took a gamble with these last two issues and it certainly paid off. 4/5

The Flash #27

Brian Buccellato is back on writing for a couple of issues and does a fantastic job with the story. For the most part Buccellato focuses on two aspects of Barry Allen’s life that are often pushed aside in favor of super powered villains: his mother’s death and his job as a police scientist. Buccellato has done and continues to do a fantastic job writing Barry, while keeping the story fresh and exciting. Patrick Zircher, along with Pasqual Ferry, does an amazing job with the art. The book has a very vibrant and gritty feel to it that works remarkably well with the tone of the story. 4.5/5

Teen Titans #27

It’s a good thing this book is being cancelled, because it has been struggling more often than it has been good. This series has gone from being a decently written book about teen superheroes to a chaotic mess featuring bastardized versions of some of the most well known second/third generation superheroes. Tim Drake has been a shadow of his former self since the start of the DCnU, and unfortunately Bart and Superboy have joined him on the list of heroes DC has ruined. Superboy isn’t really Superboy anymore, and Bart has basically become Inertia, his evil clone. Raven, Wonder Girl, and Solstice are a shell of their former selves, and Bunker, who has been the highlight of this entire series, has been absent for the bulk of the last couple of arcs. The series will probably be rebooted soon enough, and hopefully it’s done with a creative team that knows what they are doing. 2.5/5
