Well, at this juncture in the story, Alice has realized that she was just played like a fiddle by the Mad Hatter. She appears to have been rescued by three young women, but it doesn’t take her long to realize that in the Kingdom of Hearts, nothing is how it seems…at first. She soon finds out that even on the beautiful landscapes of this kingdom, blood reigns supreme! Alice has also been attacked through what seems to be nightmares, too. The Jabberwocky has plagued her during her hallucinogenic trips brought on by the Hatter. He’s in rough shape, though, as are the other players that he fought (and killed some of) during last issue’s big fight. Now, we know that the Jabberwocky and the Mad Hatter are still looking for Alice, and now she’s in the clutches of the Queen of Hearts! Can things get any worse for poor Alice? Well, by the looks of the ending and next issue’s cover, the answer might somehow be yes!
Wow, is Raven Gregory awesome! I haven’t read any of the previous Wonderland stuff, but after reading these four issues, I’m definitely going to be picking them up. That is a true testament to the writing in my opinion. The story he’s crafting has several levels to it, but doesn’t leave you feeling like you’re lost. His representation of Ali is pretty good considering she’s an adult, not a child. He still makes her seem child-like sometimes, and that is due to a certain plot element that you’ll understand when you pick this up.
The art of Gill and Embury is on point throughout the book. The Queen of Hearts is certainly the best of all the characters in this issue. She even outshines Alice, and pretty much everyone else, too. The colors are very vibrant and do straddle a close line of being too much, but in the end they work perfectly. There was one page that Gill did that was exceptional. Page fourteen showed a castle and the land around it that was absolutely amazing. It was the type of page that a collector would love to have a signed copy of, for sure!
I’m amazed at how well this series has kept my attention so far, but to be honest, Zenescope has been doing it for me for a while now, and as long as the current writing, editing, and artistic talent don’t leave, that won’t change anytime soon.
