“Destiny’s Child”: After the last few issues of X-Men Legacy this issue is quite a refreshing change of pace. I just feel that the entire Emplate arc was nothing but filler until XML could be included into the Necrosha storyline, continued from the Necrosha One-Shot a couple of months back. Now having caught up to the rest of the titles involved in Selene’s mad quest, we get to focus on Blindfold and the vision that was shown to her by Destiny, and their very cryptic conversation.
In the middle of the intense battle on the shores of Utopia, Blindfold strolls through to talk to Cyclops, and since time is of the essence the Cuckoos establish a psy-link between the two. During their “talk” the only thing that is crystal clear is that another danger awaits on Muir Island and it must be dealt with immediately. An away team is put together, led by Nightcrawler, to find out what is going on and deal with the problem. Upon landing on the island, the team scouts out Moira’s old lab and comes in from different directions just in time to find…nothing! The place is empty, but things get a little strange when Colossus touches Blindfold’s shoulder, triggering a traumatic response, and she runs off.
I really feel that Mike Carey is doing much better with this story here, and I think it’s one of the most interesting plot points in the Necrosha storyline; and that’s saying a lot considering the other titles are about 2 to 3 issues ahead. He handles the away team expertly, from the interactions with Rogue and Magneto as he tries to bring up their past “relationship” that happened way back in Uncanny X-Men #274, to Kurt and his attitude towards the Master of Magnetism. The surprise villain was actually a surprise that caught me off guard, and that’s always a welcome experience. Clay Mann does a fine job with the visuals of the book and I liked how he illustrates the way Blindfold would “see” during the psy-link between her and Cyclops, since she has only experienced the world through touch.
My only issue with the book would be the editor’s note to check out X-Force #22 to see why Senyaka is draggin’ an unconscious Warpath towards Selene. I actually had the issue next to me so I opened it up to see if I missed anything at the end of the book…and guess what? Warpath is standing with the rest of X-Force ready to put a foot in the ass of evil! So all this tells me is that the good guys weren’t successful with that, and the outcome of what looked to be a pretty cool fight about to happen was spoiled for me. Despite this minor infraction, this issue is a welcome addition to the Necrosha storyline if you are not already reading X-Men Legacy!
