Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #47

After seeing the last page of the previous issue there was no mistake that things were about to get crazy and that’s exactly what happens to kick this issue off! It’s Casey, Nobody, and Alopex vs Hun along with the Purple Dragons and when you’re outnumbered like that all you can do is cut loose and hope for the best. Though the three heroes get some help, Hun let’s Casey in on some of his “wisdom” which is sure to cause his son some serious issues. But none more serious than the return of Shredder and with the help of Baxter Stockman it’s time to destroy the Turtles while they are still adjusting after the attack on Donatello and unaware. It’s revenge time and Shredder wants everyone dead!
You have to give the creative team credit here as they continue to deliver some of the best TMNT moments for this series. Not only that but even when they push the nostalgia button they make that moment their own while giving a nod to what came before. While the first half of this issue was mainly a set up (albeit a good one) for the Casey & April mini series Waltz cranks up the action that will take us to the pivotal 50th issue. It’s done in a way that makes the second half of the issue feel like a completely different story as he gives it a tonal change. It also looks like we’re going to get back into the mystical side of things which was a big part of Secret History of the Foot Clan.
Santolouco and Pattison do it again with some of the best visuals you’ll see this week in comics. Seriously, this is the type of consistently well drawn book that fans are demanding and it’s right here! The first three panels where Casey and his friends attack his father and the Purple Dragons is a powerful and kinetic sequence. It’s one of many but it was a great way to start the brawl and Alopex couldn’t have looked any better. The characters are expressive and most of the time dialogue isn’t even needed to help translate what’s going on. Even with all of the great scenes in here it’s the updated take on the mouser attack that gets major kudos. It’s such a classic event from the original series that Santolouco and Pattison make brand new all over again with a last page that just makes you wish the next issue came out tomorrow!
This is another must have issue from a creative team that continues to shell shock fans with some pretty amazing storytelling. IDW has shown how you can revitalize an 80’s franchise in a way that pleases new and old fans alike all while taking it in a new direction! Grab this issue and see for yourself.
