TMNT35Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #35
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Writer: Tom Waltz
Artist: Mateus Santolouco & Mike Henderson
Cover: Mateus Santolouco

Ever since returning to New York, the Turtles have been putting the pieces of their lives back together while secretly preparing for their next encounter with Shredder. Waltz has also taken this time to shift the focus of the story over to Casey and his relationship with his father who is currently working for the leader of the Foot. He brings their confrontation to it’s boiling point here while giving us some more of Slash to enjoy!

The only thing you can say about a title that’s been this good for this long is that it should be in everyone’s hands who has ever been a fan of TMNT or just reading a great comic. Waltz isn’t just putting out good stories but he’s redefining the entire franchise and showing just how great it can be for this generation. The look into the various family dynamics here just keep getting better and it’s all wrapped in some great mutant ninja action that makes you come back for more. What also makes this a much stronger series is the depth at which Waltz takes the supporting cast and makes them as much the star of the book as the four brothers. This may discourage some fans who want page after page of turtles doing very cool martial arts but sometimes you just need to see a mutated eye-patch wearing cat pointing a gun at his hostage.

The visual goodness in this issue is provided by Santolouco with Henderson providing a very tender flashback moment between Casey and his deceased mother. There is a very tense mood for most of the issue which Santolouco keeps going from the graveyard battle to Hob’s apartment. He also shows a much different attitude with Slash after his “change” with just minor changes to his posture and eyes but it makes all the difference. And no offense to Sanotlouco’s artwork but the issue probably wouldn’t look as good without Pattison’s colors assisting.

Much like the title characters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has developed into a lot more than expected! You should see what this creative team has been brining then thank IDW for returning this franchise to us!

Till next time!
