Suicide Squad #3

Three issues into the new Suicide Squad title and Tom Taylor doesn’t look like he’s taking his foot off our necks anytime soon! He’s been delivering some great twists and reveals that only keep raising the bar with each page turn. However, it’s the emotional character moments that stand out as the highlights among the carnage and fights. Whether it’s Fin’s methodical actions of dealing with is brother’s death to the moment Wink meets The Aeire’s mother, Taylor makes it all worthwhile. Through all of the mess of the mission going on we also get some well placed humor while acclimating us to the new characters as our longtime established ones play the back in this story of constant double crossings and shady compromises.

Bruno Redondo’s artwork syncs with the narrative resulting in moving the story along quite well. The detail in the character designs is great and really adds to the personalities of our new members of Task Force X. Jog doesn’t get the stereotypical lean and muscular design of a speedster but one that shows off a bit of a belly and is a perfect body type for how the character is described earlier in the issue. We also get more time with Thylacine and I’m personally loving the introduction of an Aboriginal woman on this team. Her design is on point and the attention to detail is spot on. To put it frankly, she’s not drawn like a white woman with a brown color pallet. Adriano Lucas who is the color artist kills it (no pun intended) here as well and enhances the line art throughout. Fin and Shark’s showdown and Jog’s 20 panel grid action sequence are just two of the moments that made this issue pop for this writer at least.

Several things stand out with this title and all of it is what makes a great story even better. From the strong character development and uncertainty right down to the inclusion and representation taking place, this is a Suicide Squad title worth picking up!
