This Wednesday if you’re in the Los Angeles area you should stop by Collector’s Paradise and meet Richard Starkings, the creator/writer of Image’s Elephantmen, for a signing event! From 1pm to 8pm Richard will be in the store promoting signed copies of the new softcover version of Elephantmen vol. 2: Fatal Diseases, which is 312 pages of action packed story and collects issues #8-15 of the acclaimed series plus the Pilot. Richard will have lots of free comics to give away (which is par for the course of any signing event he attends!) as well as the complete Elephantmen library on display and available for sale, in addition to BOOM! Studios’ Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep HC and comics, which he lettered.
Elephantmen is a futuristic story where the MAPPO Corporation with the assistance of a mad Japanese scientist, create the ultimate warrior in these animal/human hybrids dubbed Elephantmen. Lacking any feeling or independent thought combined with their superior strength and durability, the Elephantmen make for the perfect soldier and are used as pawns by MAPPO. Years later, these blood thirsty creatures are rehabilitated in order to purge their brainwashed minds of MAPPO’s violent doctrine and eventually develop a conscious that’s entirely their own. Now with their own identities and personalities, the Elephantmen have been re-introduced into society to live amongst mankind, but as expected this idea doesn’t sit well with everybody- both human and Elephantman alike…
The summary for the Fatal Diseases TPB reads as, “A meteor falls in Santa Monica Bay, and the lives of Hip Flask, Ebony Hide, Obadiah Horn, Sahara and her father, Joshua Serengheti converge once again with far reaching consequences for all.” Artwork in the book is provided by series regular Moritat, as well as Ian Churchill, Boo Cook, Ladronn, and Rob Steen. If you want to read the entire Elephantmen saga in order of continuity, then begin with the Elephantmen: War Toys TPB, then read Elephantmen vol. 1: Wounded Animals, and conclude with Fatal Diseases. The series is a regular ongoing title, so once you’re all caught up you can easily shift to reading the single issues! Is Elephantmen really that good? I’ve heard things and quickly skimmed an issue my friend had, but never picked up the first Vol when I saw it.
It is that good. Totally original and totally awesome.

I was a skeptic and it was the art that brought me into the series… Actually, it was more the ever-so-charismatic Richard Starkings that drew me in. Make the trip, support an excellent Brick-and-Mortat comic shop, pic up some reading material, get it signed, chat for a bit and have a good time.
I am hooked after reading volume 1.

Yeah, he’s definitely cool, definitely kind, and DEFINITELY generous. And it’s better than good, it’s great. Fantastic art and storyline, it’s one of my top favorite series.
