Stay Tooned Sundays: Phineas & Ferb: Mission Marvel

After hearing the news that Disney had acquired Marvel, remember when you joked that they might do a mashup of their characters someday? Well, that day is now, because several of Marvel’s heroes have teamed up with Phineas and Ferb to protect the Tri-State Area from Red Skull, M.O.D.O.K., Venom, and Whiplash along with Danville’s own villain, Dr. Doofenshmirtz! This turns into an entertaining adventure that blends the humor and heart of the show with the Marvel characters like they belong there all along.

From the moment we see Spider-Man drop from the top of the screen and say “Aunt May! Phineas and Ferb are making a crossover!” you know you’re going to be in for something that’s just plain fun! The story begins as Phineas, Ferb and their friends are surfing in space when a beam from another failed invention from Dr. Doofenshmirtz misfires, bounces off of the kid’s space station, then hits a group of Marvel Heroes. This leaves Thor, Spider-Man, Hulk, and Iron Man powerless so they head to S.H.I.E.L.D. where Nick Fury informs them that the “attack” originated from Danville. When the heroes finally meet up with the kids it’s race to restore their powers and stop Red Skull and his cohorts from destroying the Tri State area!

There is so much fun to be had in this episode that if you’re not enjoying it you’re probably taking your superheroes way too seriously. The trademark humor we’ve come to expect from countless Phineas & Ferb episodes remains in tact providing laughs for a wide range of viewers. With references to the Incredible Hulk television series and The Avengers film to the usual running gags from the Phineas & Ferb cartoon that round things out. There’s even the welcome Stan Lee cameo and voiceover that pops in from time to time. All of these are worked into the overall plot of the show perfectly and keep things moving at a very nice pace.

For those wondering, the show just isn’t one liners and site gags as there are some very fun action scenes throughout Sure it’s made to be more cartoony than slick and stylized violence but it definitely goes over well and the big fight at the end is one of the best as it should be! From Thor and Hulk using Venom as a tennis ball to Dr. Doofenshmirtz pummeling the Red Skull with waffles you will enjoy it from beginning to end.

There’s not much that goes wrong with this paring of the two worlds and it seems as if all of that fan overreacting was just that. There’s nothing wrong with a crossover as long as it’s done well and the spirit of both parts involved are kept intact. Phineas & Ferb: Mission Marvel does just that and with a style all it’s own! So if you’re wondering if you should watch this my only answer is “yes”. Yes you should!
