Our favorite web-head is here on the big screen (again), Peter Parker is back! Alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, this is one of the biggest Marvel movies of the year.

Marvel introducing Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War was a big step for them. It allowed them to introduce their version of one of the most popular characters in Marvel and comic book history, Spider – Man. Now set in the MCU, fans and moviegoers get a new look at the origin of Spider – Man. We don’t need to see the radioactive Spider bite, we don’t need the whole “with great power comes great responsibility”, we all got that already.

The film is set a couple months after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Peter Parker, now being played a third time by Tom Holland (Locke, In the Heart of the Sea) who misses all the fun and excitement of being an Avenger and wants to cash in on some more good ol’ Avenger action. Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. wants to keep Peter on the ground to be a friendly neighborhood spider-man. Parker agrees and keeps to fighting crime in Queens, New York. Eventually, his activities are starting to get in the way of his extra-curricular school activities, including the school debate team headed by his high school crush Liz, played by Laura Harrier. Some deadly weapons start appearing around New York. Peter wanting to prove himself to Stark decides to investigate the weapons with help from his friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, who accidentally discovered Peter’s secret identity. They discover that the weapons are left over from The Avengers battles and being scavenged by Adrian Toomes, played by Michael Keaton, and his crew to sell on the black market.

Out of the entire Spider – Man movies we have seen, this is definitely the funniest, and in my opinion much better than the Sony Amazing Spider – Man movies. The film does a good job of showing us Peter Parker in high school. He feels and looks like a real high school student with real high school problems. The movie does a great job of balancing the coming of age teenage story with Peter coming into his own as a hero. Holland does a good Spider – Man, but he also realizes how important it is to get Peter Parker right and relatable as well. As Peter Parker, he’s awkward, nervous, gawky, and socially a little off. As Spider-Man, he’s fun, adventurous, and best of all, he absolutely loves being a superhero!

My favorite part of the film would definitely be the characters. Zendaya’s character, Michelle, is a fun addition to the film, she doesn’t add a whole lot to the story, but she was really funny, cuckoo, and honestly made me laugh and smile more than any other character. I just love how she would appear out of nowhere, and say something dark and random in a very wearisome way.

Peter’s best friend, Ned was something really special to see. I could connect with that character because I was that character in high school. Batalon and Holland have great chemistry, and come off as real good friends. Much like Zendaya’s character, Ned is endearing source of laughs and awe, constantly surprised by everything that’s around him, and geeking out like most of us would if we found out our best friend was Spider – Man.

It also looks like Marvel is listening to the criticism fans having been saying about the weak villains. We have been getting some really good and well written villains in the MCU lately. Great villains such as Ego the Living Planet, Alexander Pierce, Zemo, and now Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes a.k.a The Vulture can now join that list. I honestly think Keaton is the best villain in the MCU right behind Loki. A well written villain, with a motive, and a reasoning. This isn’t a spoiler, but one of my favorite lines in the movie is when Spider – Man ask Vulture “How can you do this to her?” Vulture replies, “To her? I’m doing this for her.”

Earlier I mentioned how much I loved the characters in this film. I know many people are really digging the new, young, and always lustful lookin’ Aunt May. On the other hand, the film played up that she is hot a little too much. I understand the filmmakers made her closer to Parker’s age because it will make her more relatable to a teenage character. Call me old fashioned and a geek, but I like my old, wise, and always lustful lookin’ old Aunt May. The old Aunt May that gave Peter words of wisdom, insight, and had more to offer than just her looks.

Similarly, Peter’s love interest, Liz, feels a little weak, and it’s hard to judge because the two do not spend a lot of screen time together if you can believe that. Liz lacked the steez and spunk of a Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy. However, she does play a big part later on in the film, a part I did not see coming.

Furthermore, I feel like when you are watching this, you can tell the differences between Marvel involvement and Sony’s involvement. What looks and feels like Sony from the previous Amazing Spider – Man movies probably is. Remember all that talk about Sony at the Sinister Six movie? That looks like it still on. It’s like Marvel said to Sony, “Yeah, we can work on this together. But to let you know we really own this, we are going to piss on it with Iron Man.”Speaking of Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man isn’t in the movie that much, and at times it feels like this is one big commercial advertising, “Hey, Spider – Man will be in the next Avenger’s movie!”

Spider – Man: Homecoming is the funniest Spider – Man film, and the one that grabs the most inspiration from the comics. The movie did a good job with characters, and I’m looking forward to seeing Holland as Spidey again. I do think this film is a little weak when it comes to Raimi’s films, especially with the second.
