NYCC: The Milestone Universe Returns!

NYCC: The Milestone Universe Returns!

It’s been a long time coming for this announcement but it’s finally here! The Milestone Universe will officially return to comics and will take place on Earth M. Sure it was wayyy back in 2015 when we were first told the company created by Denys Cowan, Dwayne McDuffie, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle would be returning but after what seemed like an eternity of silence on the project there’s finally some light at the end of the tunnel.

Today at New York Comic Con the Milestone co-founders were joined by DC Comics Publisher Jim Lee, Reginald Hudlin, Kyle Baker, Alice Randall, Greg Pak and Ken Lashley to make this announcement and give fans a glimpse at what to expect from the new Milestone Universe.

We didn’t have to wait long for the first announcement as the new logo for Earth M was unveiled to the audience. Cheers and applause came immediately as it was explained how setting these characters in this world will allow some freedom when it comes to some of the stories that will be told but they aren’t limited to just Earth M. We can also expect to see the launch of these stories in the Spring of 2018.

The Milestone Universe is packed with very beloved characters and the first ones we got to see was the return of Icon and Rocket! In Milestone #1, a story by Reginald Hudlin and Denys Cowan with art by Ken Lashly. Another round of applause and cheers rang out as fans got to see the new designs for two of Milestone’s most noticeable characters. Icon’s new color scheme is still cool though I do miss the green but Rockets new costume is going to take some getting used to from this longtime fan.

Now as far as how the story will begin we were told that this will be a reset and that you don’t have to have prior knowledge of the 1993-1997 run of titles. However it was also stated that some of the classic storylines will be touched on so we’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Next up was another Milestone alum as we saw that Static Shock will also make his return with Reginald Hudlin and Denys Cowan writing and the legendary Kyle Baker on art duties. With the tease of more returning characters in this series we were introduced to a new character simply named, Amber.

With Greg Pak sitting on the panel I was hoping that a series favorite of mine was going to return and I was right but it’s going to have a twist. The original title was called Xombi but now that there’s been an added component to how David Kim gained his abilities he’ll be starring in Duo.

A brand new team book was introduced in Love Army. Not much about this title was revealed but we find out that they’re a secret organization with all new characters to the Milestone Universe. The next title was shrouded in mystery and though we got to see some concept art we weren’t even told the character’s name. Only that this would be a vigilante story that would be dark and edgy explore the concepts and roots of vigilantism.

As an added bonus and a great way to end the panel the crowd was treated to a snippet of the upcoming documentary from Robert Kirkman who introduced the Secret History of Comic Books. This particular segment focused on the creation behind Milestone Comics back in the 1990s. And just when you thought the good news was over it was announced that Christopher Priest would also be coming aboard!
