Marvel Snapshot: Character Spotlight: Eternity

Hey everybody, welcome back to another great character spotlight, right here in Marvel Snapshot! This week, I’ll be continuing my look into the Marvel Cosmic universe, and showcase none other than Eternity himself (he is a guy, right?)! This powerful member of the Elders of the Universe has been involved in many of the different characters in the Marvel U, from the cosmic, to the other-worldly beings like Nightmare and Dormammu! Eternity was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1965 (Strange Tales #138).

The being known as Eternity was first seen in an epic story that involved Doctor Strange and Dormammu. The Doc was trying to defeat Baron Mordo and Dormammu, and asked Eternity for help, but Eternity told Doctor Strange that he could handle it. Doctor Strange does defeat Dormammu temporarily, but then Eternity banished Dormammu back to his fiery realm. Next, Eternity gets captured and kidnapped by Nightmare. It’s up to Doctor Strange, and of all people Juggernaut, to stop Nightmare and save Eternity.
Eternity joins the pantheon of cosmic elders to try and thwart the mad Titan, Thanos. Thanos obtained the Infinity Gems, and fastened them to a golden glove, making the Infinity Gauntlet. Well, Eternity had about as much success as the rest of the universe, and was imprisoned by Thanos. Thanos was caught unaware by Nebula, though, and she gained the power, but then when all seemed lost, Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer, and Adam Warlock saved the day.

The trial of Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards, Dormammu and Umar stealing his powers, imprisonment by the Magus, an adventure with the Defenders, and just about everything else you can think of, has been the life of Eternity. Even as recently as Chaos War have we seen heroes trying to understand this enigmatic and powerful entity. Basically, Eternity is a cosmic presence that exists everywhere at the same time, and that is responsible for this universe’s well being.
