The past thirteen issues of Die! Die! Die! have been insane! From quadruplet assassins named after members of the Beatles to wild government conspiracies to d#@k babies! Now we’re headed to outer space where we find out the office of the presidency comes with some hidden job descriptions.
The strength of this story has got to be in it’s unpredictability and how far Kirkman and Gimple can effectively push the crazy of the narrative. Seems as if no matter how far they go it fits perfectly into the world of assassins and political intrigue that they have laid out so far. With as wild as this issue is, it does feel like they slowed things down as we get several jaw-dropping reveals. Each reveal is better than the next and serves the entire story with multiple results. The connection between Anita and the little furry alien is explained but the HUGE reveal regarding the special job of the President is both important and hilarious. Though it may come off a bit comical at times, the writers still manage to give it the weight and validity to let you know the stakes are high for this intergalactic boxing match.
Before I get into how great the visuals are here I’m just going to say that Burnham and Fairbairn take the famous Muhamad Ali vs Superman piece by Neal Adams and Nick Giordano to unprecedented levels! The famous bout is recreated here but the real payoff is that the double-page spread is overflowing with some of THE best cameos scattered in the audience. Just looking over the massive crowd you’ll find your favorite comic, real life, and sci-fi greats among the audience. As fun as this is to see, it also lets you know just how high the stakes are concerning this fight. There’s a point where things aren’t going too well for Obama and this is where things get bloody and a little gory and it looks fantastic! You get a sense of power and energy with each hit and when things get dire, the emotional kick is right there in the visuals.
By the time the issue wraps, it feels like a stand alone story that you can read and enjoy for what it is if this is your first time checking out the series. If not, then you’ll certainly gain more from the narrative especially when we get to the cliffhanger because…WOW!!
Die! Die! Die! is one of the most insane series out right now and should be in your read pile if it’s not already!
