Original Sins #4

This series has been very hit and miss with me and this issue is no different. It’s meant to fill in the small cracks of an event that give you a peak at what else is going on. The only problem with that is when most of those actions aren’t too interesting or leaves the reader scratching their head.
The Doctor Doom story is THE highlight of the issue as it proves that he’s not to be taken lightly by anyone. The Young Avengers tales continues on and isn’t too interesting aside from the text conversations going on between members. Unfortunately that sequence was more interesting than the actual plot of the story. The last entry, though drawn quit well, left me scratching my head despite the teachable moment at the end.
This isn’t a necessary tie-in to have unless you’re really concerned about getting every book in the event. – IM

Doctor Doom. Awwwww, YEAH! You don’t f#+k with Doctor Doom! James Robinson and Alex Maleev had me in chills with this quick hit about Victor Von Doom. I would read more Doom from these guys!
Young Avengers. I already told y’all. I love the Young Avengers. However, this story failed to grab me in the first issue and the art is still barf, so I don’t read it.
Captain America. Learn about the Eskimo that once peepee’d on Captain America. Yep. That sure is what I said.
The Doctor Doom story, in this issue, was well worth the cover price. I’m talking, golden, like Spider-Man’s Tangled Web #4 “Severance Package”. That’s how solid and profound this thing is! And the Cap piece is just the icing on the cake. It made me forget there was junk in between. My score is soley based on these two stories. -AF

Mighty Avengers #12

When Luke Cage was caught in the energy wave he learned some things about his father’s past and decided to confront him about it. This could have made for a boring, cliché of a tale but Ewing throws in several curve balls that end up paying off big! Not only does Luke find out his team wasn’t the first to be called “Mighty Avengers” but that Blade and Blue Marvel were members as well. Ewing uses Cage’s father to tell most of the story in flashback and starts tying together some plot points from earlier in the series by the time the issue is over. We also get an origin story for The Bear who ends up stealing the show along with Blue Marvel.
Greg Land’s artwork pretty much is what it is. Either you’re going to like his style of art or you’re not. Though I will say that when compared to the earlier issues in this series things do seem to be improving. The huge underground battle was a stand out sequence that did well to get us to the cliffhanger at the end.
So it looks like this is the last issue of Mighty Avengers that will tie into Original Sin since the team is moving on to another adventure jumpstarted by this. Now as far as a tie-in is concerned I’m on the fence because the secret that was revealed here doesn’t seem like something that will have too much of an impact aside from the immediate actions taking place. On the other hand though, Ewing has been telling a great story with these characters and it looks like things won’t be slowing down anytime soon. – IM

Daredevil #6

What did good ol’ Hornhead see from the eye-bomb when he was back in NYC for a minute? It made him go look up his mom. Not for something juicy about Sister Maggie, like…oh…say, she used to be a badass S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent, or something, but a heartbreaking revelation about his idolized father. He couldn’t really dig into it, though. Sister Maggie is in a mess and it looks like we’re going to Wakanda! Pack your bags! But, if you were looking for a dope tie-in with this already great series, don’t pack it in your carry-on. You’ll be disappointed on the Original Sin front. Otherwise, another solid Daredevil issue from Waid and friends! – AF

The truth that Daredevil was exposed to is going to rock him to his core and hits on a very personal level. It leads him to search for his mother who, to his surprise, has been arrested for defacing a military installation. The problem is that there’s a cover up between a Wakandan Military Attache and a U.S. General who are extraditing her to Wakanda. So the issues about what Daredevil saw are put on hold to save his mother.
Waid and Rodriguez put together a solid issue that delivers as one of the better tie-ins to Original Sin that involves the heroes who were at the explosion. It’s an eye opening (no pun intended) problem for Daredevil that is touched on pretty well and mixed in quite well with the deceitful government officials. Also being that Daredevil isn’t a title I regularly read, this is an issue that was worth picking up. The visuals from Lopez are very solid so you won’t be let down there either.
This doesn’t seem like it’s going to end well for Daredevil whether he saves his mother or not but at least Waid and Rodriguez are making it enjoyable. – IM

Thor & Loki: The Tenth Realm #2

Well, if you ask me…the recap page spoiled the big surprise of this story. I do not recall reading that Angela is Thor’s sister. I only know that from cussing and discussing with my good buddy, and partner in crime, Infinite Man. Since the recap page spoiled it, do you really want to get to the story? Me either. But, let’s, anyways.
The story here, is great fun! I got lost in the fun that is the Guardians of the Galaxy and the fun that is lots of fighting and action and was intrigued by the exchange of wits between Loki and the Queen of Angels (she is really mean, by the way). I also felt the gravity of Angela’s entrance. This is one cool book! I just wish they could have left that one part out of the recap page. And it loses marks, with me, because the art is kinda ugly. – AF

Thor and Loki enter the Tenth Realm with the goal of finding the sister he didn’t know he had. However, once he announces they are from Asgard things quickly escalate to a fight with the Angels. Loki vanishes and we find out the Angels aren’t all that nice in their dealing with each other or Asgardians.
This is just a great tie-in for several reasons but the main one is that it deals with a plot that has some weight to it. Nothing flimsy here as Thor having a sister is pretty big as well as there being a Tenth Realm that was cut off by his father. Aaron and Ewing keep things fast paced and once again they have Loki steal the show by mid issue. The visuals are pretty solid though the last page is the one that stands out as one of the best.
There’s a lot going on here and with Loki pulling the strings things are only going to get a lot more complicated. This is one of the tie-ins that’s worth picking up especially if you’re a fan of Thor. – IM

Amazing Spider-Man #4

We’ve been getting glimpses of Silk for some time now but this is the issue where Peter comes face to face with the other person bit by the spider. A secret unknown to him (or us) until he was caught in the energy wave of the eye bomb explosion. With this rush of new information Spidey heads off to rescue Silk.
Slott makes this one quite intense meeting between the two and in pure Spidey fashion it doesn’t go as planned. We also get a look at how her powers work and the slight differences are pretty cool. However, like much of Slott’s work with this title, it’s the events happening in the background that really help the issue shine. As well as the artwork from Humberto Ramos which is just as great as ever.
This is a pretty big secret and that helps make it one of the better tie-ins to the series. Whether you’re reading Amazing Spider-Man already or not, you’ll want to pick this up because of the solid story, great artwork, and relevance to Original Sin. – IM

So there was a girl that was bitten. She goes by Silk. Other than looking great in her costume (and civies, for that matter), what’s she good for? Another doofus for Pete to babysit, like Alpha? I hope not. There wasn’t much of a shocker here and I was kinda let down. I am much more interested in the no-good that Black Cat is up to in the running story. – AF
