It has been quite some time, but Danny Rand is back, and though not much has changed, he is a little different this time around. Andrews is bringing us a much darker Iron Fist than we’ve seen, and with it quite possibly a series on par with the Immortal Iron Fist title from a few years back.

From the very beginning this doesn’t feel like your regular Iron Fist title, and that is a very good thing. Danny isn’t in a good place right now, and he’s coming to grips with several issues about himself. Andrews also uses this time to deliver a nice quick origin of the character for anyone who may not be too familiar, and with great visual and written accuracy. The one panel with Danny looking into his father’s eyes before his death is quite jarring, along with the revelation that came with it.

Don’t think this issue is all one long sob story, because just when you think the story is going one way, Andrews throws you out of the window to shock the mess out of you! This is when we get to see Iron Fist in action and the main plot begins to take shape. This is also when Andrews gets to visually deliver some very cool action scenes from panel to panel. Actually this is just one good looking issue, and Kaare’s art style also helps to set this apart from previous incarnations of the title. This could have been done as a silent issue and had just as strong of an impact as it does when the art syncs with the narrative here.

Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #1 is a great issue for both new and old fans of the character. Andrews doesn’t slack in either the writing nor the artwork, and seems intent on delivering some great character development along the way. So do yourself a favor and check this one out if you want a solid story with some martial arts thrown in!
